Preserve failure messages when indexing resumes
resolveIndexingStatus can replace any status text when indexing is active and no operation owns the slot. The debugger-start and project-initialization failure paths clear their ownership flags after writing the failure message. The deferred indexing update can therefore replace those messages.
Allow indexing to replace only an empty slot, previously shown indexing text, or explicitly approved completed-operation messages. Do not replace failure messages.

Move the index lookups out of the compile(path).get { } block.
The get callback runs while the compiler's SynchronizedTask is held. The change makes findImportableQualifiedNames run SQLite index queries for each unresolved simple name. The old lookup read in-memory sets. These queries now run while the compile task is held.
While the task is held, CompletionProvider.complete sees synchronizedTask.isBusy() and returns CompletionResult.EMPTY. During indexing, the queries can also wait on the index writer. As a result, Java completion can return nothing for the whole auto-fix pass.
To fix this:
- Collect only the unresolved names and the file imports inside
get. - Run the index lookups after
getreturns.

MINOR: Still open at 46de3d9 and at the stack tip 780908a. findImportableQualifiedNames still runs inside compiler.compile(path).get { }.
One part of the original claim no longer holds: SQLiteIndex uses WAL, so these reads do not wait on the indexing writer. The rest stands. The compile task is held for one SQLite query per unresolved name, and while it is held CompletionProvider.complete sees isBusy() and returns CompletionResult.EMPTY.
Fix: collect unresolvedNames(...).distinct() and getFileImports(...) inside get, then query the index after it returns.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@jatezzz Thanks for the correction. My claim that these reads wait on the indexing writer was incorrect because SQLiteIndex uses WAL.
The Minor finding remains valid. The index lookups extend the time that the compiler task is held. During that time, CompletionProvider.complete can return CompletionResult.EMPTY.
The fix remains: collect unresolvedNames(...).distinct() and getFileImports(...) inside get, then run the index lookups after get returns.

Learning: In CodeOnTheGo, lsp/indexing/src/main/kotlin/org/appdevforall/codeonthego/indexing/SQLiteIndex.kt uses SQLite WAL. Do not infer that index reads wait on the indexing writer merely because indexing runs concurrently. Separately, index queries inside compiler.compile(path).get hold the compiler's SynchronizedTask, which can cause CompletionProvider.complete to return CompletionResult.EMPTY when isBusy() is true.

Inject a no-op unreadableJarReporter, or write valid JARs, in JarIndexingServiceProgressTest.
jar() writes a one-byte file. CombinedJarScanner.scan cannot open that file as a JAR, so every pass records it as unreadable. TestService does not pass unreadableJarReporter, so refresh() calls the production default, reportUnreadableClasspathJars. That function reads BaseApplication.baseInstance and calls flashError. Under Robolectric, that call can throw or depend on global app state. The exception then goes to the service's CoroutineExceptionHandler after the pass closes.
The assertions still pass. The consequence is different: every progress test runs the unreadable-JAR reporting path by accident and calls app-level UI code. A regression in reportUnreadableClasspathJars would change what these tests do.

MINOR: Still open at 46de3d9 and at the stack tip 780908a. TestService still builds JarIndexingService without unreadableJarReporter, so it gets the default ::reportUnreadableClasspathJars (JarIndexingService.kt:58). The one-byte placeholder JARs make every pass call that app-level UI path.
The sibling tests JarIndexingServiceUnreadableJarTest and JarIndexingServiceUnreadableJarDedupTest already inject a reporter. Do the same here: unreadableJarReporter = {}.

- Add
unreadableJarReporter = {}to theTestServicesuperclass constructor inJarIndexingServiceProgressTest.kt. - Keep the placeholder JARs and progress assertions unchanged. The no-op reporter isolates these tests from production UI reporting.
- Validate the progress tests in the coding workflow.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
@itsaky-adfa MINOR: Library prefix matches can fill the whole list before any SDK prefix match gets in.
fill runs in a fixed order, and boot (android.jar) always goes last. ModuleClasspathLookup never includes android.jar, because it isn't on the module compile classpath. So when qualifiedNamesByPrefix alone returns MAX_COMPLETION_ITEMS (50) results, the boot prefix fill returns early and no SDK class is offered. An exact name match still gets through.
Example: in a Compose project, typing Text returns dozens of top-level Compose/androidx Text* classes, so android.widget.TextView and android.text.TextWatcher don't appear. The old code also cut the list to 50, but it did so after sorting across every source, so SDK classes could still make the list.
Possible fixes: reserve part of the limit for boot, or collect all prefix candidates, rank them, and then cut to the limit.

@itsaky-adfa MINOR: Import completion stops working for Java files outside any module.
When compiler.module is null, this returns only the static keyword. Before this change, legacyImportPathCompletion still offered the Android SDK classes, so import java.util. completed in a file that no module owns. Now it returns nothing.
Consider falling back to the boot classpath when there's no module, rather than returning early.

@itsaky-adfa MINOR: "Import class" is enabled even when no module owns the file.
enabled = true overrides BaseJavaCodeAction.prepare, which sets enabled = isJava && module != null. For a Java file with no module, the action is shown and enabled. Running it then hits ImportCandidates.None (line 110) and shows "No importable class named 'X'", which is misleading. It may also add the "Libraries are still being indexed" hint, even though no candidate could ever be found.
Keep the module check from the base class, e.g. enabled = module != null (or don't override enabled here).

- ClasspathTypeLookup.kt:118 - default-package classpath classes offered as imports
MINOR
- ModuleClasspathLookup.kt:190 - classpath scope re-resolved twice per completion request (PLAUSIBLE)
- EditorViewModel.kt:281 - restored status loses its gravity (unreachable today)
- AutoFixImportsAction.kt:76 - index queries still run under the compile lock (prior thread, re-raised there)
- JarIndexingServiceProgressTest.kt:117 - progress tests still call the production unreadable-JAR reporter (prior thread, re-raised there)

First-round findings, re-checked at head:
- ClasspathTypeLookup crowd-out (jatezzz): fixed.
6246dc3gives each source its own limit, so the boot classpath is no longer starved. - AddImportAction enabled outside a module (jatezzz): fixed.
b4f1c14marks it invisible when the base class disabled it. - EditorViewModel status overwritten (coderabbit): fixed.
272c3d8keeps the replaced message inreplacedStatusand restores it when indexing ends. - ImportCompletionProvider with no module (jatezzz): accepted. The PR body now lists it as an intended behaviour change, so I am not raising it again.
- AutoFixImportsAction lookups under the compile lock (coderabbit): not fixed. Re-raised in its thread.
- JarIndexingServiceProgressTest reporter (coderabbit): not fixed. Re-raised in its thread.

compileClasspathClassesis still filled on every setup with no reader left. #2074 deletes it, as this PR's body says.ProjectManagerImpl.indexingServiceManageris lazily re-created afterdestroy(). Stage has the same lazy pattern, and the next project session reuses that manager, so nothing leaks permanently.IndexingProgressTrackerkeys jobs by source id across services. The KDoc says this is intended. The library and module-output services submit disjoint sets by construction (external classpath vs. classpath minus external), so I could not reproduce an early Idle.
Rule applied. CLAUDE.md moves a ticket to QA only with no outstanding critical, high or medium findings. REVIEW.md asks that each blocking comment be tied to a concrete risk. The IMPORTANT finding names its input and the compile error it causes.

IMPORTANT: findImportableQualifiedNames now offers classpath classes in the default package, and a class there cannot be imported.
The old findQualifiedNames matched name.endsWith("." + simpleName), which skipped every name with no dot. The index records a root-level class in a JAR with packageName = "" and fqName = "Foo" (JarSymbolScanner.kt:60-67). simpleNameOf("Foo") is "Foo", and a public class is not package-scoped, so the check here yields it. If a dependency ships a public root-level Foo and a file in com.example references an unresolved Foo, Add import and Auto-fix imports offer Foo and insert import Foo;. That is a compile error (JLS 7.5), so the quick fix breaks the file. Obfuscated or repackaged AARs put classes at the JAR root.
Fix: skip symbol.packageName.isEmpty() here, and add a fixture JAR with a root-level class to the lookup test.
| replacedStatus = null | ||
| } | ||
| shownIndexingStatus = indexingStatus | ||
| _statusText.value = next to CENTER |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Restoring replacedStatus when indexing ends drops the replaced message's gravity and always writes CENTER.
No current caller can reach this. Every status writer goes through ProjectHandlerActivity.setStatus(status), which passes Gravity.CENTER, so the replaced message was always centred. The first setStatus(text, Gravity.START) caller will see its message come back centred after an indexing pass.
Fix: save statusGravity alongside replacedStatus and restore both.

| fun of(module: ModuleProject): ClasspathScope { | ||
| val classpath = module.getCompileClasspaths(excludeSourceGeneratedClassPath = false) |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: ClasspathScope.of walks the module's dependency graph twice on every lookup, and a lookup is now built per completion request.
ClasspathTypeLookup.forModule calls ModuleClasspathLookup.of per query, by design, so a lookup never outlives a sync. So each class-name or XML tag completion keystroke runs getCompileClasspaths twice, recursively, before any index query. The trie it replaces was built once per sync. I did not measure the cost on a device, so this is PLAUSIBLE. It scales with module and dependency count, on the completion hot path.
Fix: cache the ClasspathScope per module and invalidate it on sync and on build, which still meets the never-stale goal. Or derive external from a single walk.
| target: Int, | ||
| ) { | ||
| var fetch = target - names.size | ||
| while (names.size < target) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: Each doubling of fetch re-runs the prefix query from offset 0, so the rows already fetched are read and deserialized again.
This only matters when many rows repeat a name already taken. Without that, the first fetch fills the target. If it shows up in a profile, page with an offset or a DISTINCT name query.

…ervices JvmLibraryIndexingService and JvmGeneratedIndexingService duplicated the index lifecycle, the single-submitter mutex, and the fingerprint-driven reindex loop. Extract JarIndexingService to own all of it; each subclass now supplies only its index key, DB/index names, and jarsToIndex(). Also fixes a latent crash: the old per-service CoroutineScope had no Job of its own, so an uncaught exception during a refresh() pass (e.g. from an unreadable workspace) cancelled the scope's implicit Job, silently breaking every later refresh() call. The shared base uses a SupervisorJob with a CoroutineExceptionHandler instead, so one failed pass doesn't take down the service. Drops JvmLibraryIndexingService.onProjectSynced, an EventBus subscriber with no publisher (dead code).
DocumentUtils.isJavaFile ran Files.exists/isDirectory, main-thread I/O inside prepare(), which every Java code action inherits. Decide from the file name alone instead.
It called the unfiltered findQualifiedNames, so it could offer a package-private (or Kotlin file-private) class from another package, which AddImportAction already excludes via findImportableQualifiedNames.
…e index SimpleTagCompleter and QualifiedTagCompleter no longer walk ModuleProject.compileClasspathClasses; they read a ClasspathLookup built from the module-scoped index lookup, falling back to the parent package when a prefix names neither a package nor a class. The source-file trie (compileJavaSourceClasses) is unchanged. Both completers take the lookup factory as a constructor parameter (default: the real index-backed one) so a test can inject a fake without a real module or index.
…ing runs Kotlin's completion path has no equivalent to cache: AnalysisContext.matchLevelCache is a per-request memo (KotlinLanguageServer.complete has no result cache at all), so nothing there needs to react to indexing state.
- ImportPathChildrenTest: cover requireNotClass's source, classpath and boot branches, and the no-throw package case; the boot branch had no direct test. - JavaCompilerServiceClassLookupTest: restore the previous Environment.ANDROID_JAR in @afterclass instead of leaking the test value to later test classes. - JvmLibraryIndexingServicePhaseTest: add a timeout to the FIFO test's joinAll() and to refreshAndAwait's join(), so a regression hangs the test instead of the suite. - JvmModuleOutputIndexingServiceTest: fix the comment claiming passes serialize so a later join() waits out an earlier one; the two launches race for the mutex, and this test passes only because the jar's fingerprint is unchanged either way. - CollectUnimportedSymbolMatchesTest: turn a three-line // comment inside a test body into a block comment.
Extension overloads that differ only by receiver, such as Iterable<T>.first() and List<T>.first(), shared one key, so each source kept only the last one. The key is now stored in the payload as well: rebuilding it on read could not recover the receiver, and completion dedupes callables by key.
Constructors, Java fields and member functions were fetched and then always rejected, and with no ORDER BY they could fill the whole prefix budget, so a prefix like `get` lost real candidates such as stdlib extensions.

3 of 4, stacked on #2072. Each module builds its own trie of every class on its compile classpath. The same JARs appear in most modules, so the tries duplicate one another. On the moto g34 that is 472,065 nodes across 92 tries, rebuilt on every open. The persistent JVM symbol index already holds each JAR once, across modules and across sessions. This PR moves every trie reader onto the index. The trie itself is still filled, so #2074 can delete it on its own and one revert restores it.
prepare()runs on the UI thread and used to query the classpath. It now does no I/O there and looks the class up in the background.Behaviour changes, all intended:
staticin import completion.Checked on a moto g34 at font scale 1.0 and 2.0: status text and progress bar without clipping, restored after an activity recreation, init text not overwritten, build status kept while indexing, no flash on a warm open. Not checked: cancel during indexing, and indexing ending with no build running. This project runs out of memory on that device before any indexing pass finishes, with or without this stack (see #2074).
