IMPORTANT
- CombinedJarScanner.kt:62 - a cancelled scan leaves the JarFile open until GC
- KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:317 - extension overloads that differ only by receiver share one key
- KotlinCompletions.kt:661 - unimported type-alias completion inserts no import
MINOR
- FilteredIndex.kt:95 - every query copies and binds the whole active set
- MergedIndex.kt:32 - per-source duplicate rows use up each backing limit
- CombinedJarScanner.kt:98 - skipping all of META-INF drops version-only classes
- JarSymbolScanner.kt:72 - nesting still guessed from '$' in the name
- JvmSymbolDescriptor.kt:219 - deserialized key differs from the stored row key
- KotlinCompletions.kt:578 - constructor and member rows use up the fetch budget

Stack. This is layer 2 of 4: #2071 <- #2072 (this) <- #2073 <- #2074. #2071 is below; #2073 and #2074 are above. Every claim was checked against the stack tip, 5f67f3eab0 (#2074's head). 11 of this PR's files change again higher up, including SQLiteIndex, FilteredIndex, CombinedJarScanner, JvmSymbolIndex and JvmLibraryIndexingService. Each finding here is still present at the tip, and none was dropped as already fixed higher up.
Pre-existing code. KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:317, KotlinCompletions.kt:652 and JarSymbolScanner.kt:72 are lines this PR did not write. They are raised because the PR changes what they feed: the (source, key) identity and dedupeKey, the exact-match-first completion stage, and the InnerClasses-based visibility. Each comment says so.
Prior rounds. None; this is the first review on this PR.
Verdict rule. This repo has no written approve/request-changes rule. CLAUDE.md ties the QA transition to "no outstanding critical, high, or medium findings", and REVIEW.md is coaching, not a gate, so the default applied: confirmed IMPORTANT findings mean request changes. The MINOR findings marked PLAUSIBLE (CombinedJarScanner.kt:98, KotlinCompletions.kt:578, FilteredIndex.kt:95, JarSymbolScanner.kt:72) are graded on the mechanism, without a reproduction.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: When a scan is cancelled, this jar.use never closes the JarFile, because the sequence {} it runs in is abandoned mid-iteration rather than finished.
SQLiteIndex.insertBatched now calls ensureActive() before each batch. When BackgroundIndexer supersedes a pass (a new sync, or a rebuilt R.jar), that throws CancellationException in the consumer. The suspended sequence is never resumed, so use's finally never runs, and the JarFile and its descriptor stay open until the GC's cleaner reaches them. Repeated syncs keep piling them up. REVIEW.md section 2 counts an unclosed Closeable as a leak. The sibling scan(rootVf) above has no closeable, so it is unaffected.
Fix: have scan take a block (scan(jarPath) { symbols -> index.insertSource(...) }) so use wraps the whole consumption, or return a Closeable sequence that the caller closes in finally.

IMPORTANT: A Kotlin function's key leaves out its extension receiver, so extension overloads that differ only by receiver share one (source, key), and CONFLICT_REPLACE keeps only the last row.
In kotlin-stdlib, fun <T> Array<out T>.first(), fun <T> Iterable<T>.first() and fun <T> List<T>.first() all key to kotlin.collections#first(), and any library that overloads an extension by receiver within one package collapses the same way. Only one row survives per JAR. dedupeKey (new here) uses the same key for callables, so the collapse also happens across sources. buildUnimportedSymbolItem then drops that one survivor whenever its receiver does not match the implicit receivers, and the overload that would have matched is never offered. Extension properties at line 388 (key = name) have the same problem. The key formula predates this PR, but this PR makes (source, key) the row identity and key the dedup identity, so the gap is now the index's contract.
Fix: include the receiver type in the key for extension functions and properties, and bump the index format version so existing rows are rebuilt.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: Still open at head and at the stack tip: KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:332 still builds a function's key as name(parameter types) without the extension receiver, and rows are keyed PRIMARY KEY (_source_id, _key) (SQLiteIndex.kt:573), so Array<out T>.first(), Iterable<T>.first() and List<T>.first() in kotlin-stdlib still collapse to one row per JAR.
Include the receiver type in the key of extension functions and properties.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: The defect is at KotlinCompletions.kt:652, just outside this hunk: the TYPE_ALIAS branch of buildUnimportedSymbolItem sets only detail. Unlike the classifier branch here and the callable branches above, it never sets setClassCompletionData or an additionalEditHandler.
TYPE_ALIAS is in CLASSIFIER_KINDS, so it is in UNIMPORTED_SYMBOL_KINDS, and the new exact-match-first stage puts an alias named exactly what the user typed at the top. Picking an alias from another package inserts the bare name with no import, so the file has an unresolved reference. The branch predates this PR, but this PR reworks this function and moves exact matches to the front, which is what makes the alias the first item offered.
Fix: give TYPE_ALIAS the same auto-import as a top-level class (e.g. KotlinAutoImportEditHandler), or leave it out of UNIMPORTED_SYMBOL_KINDS until it has one.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: Still open at head and at the stack tip: the TYPE_ALIAS branch of buildUnimportedSymbolItem (KotlinCompletions.kt:652 at the tip) still sets only detail, with no setClassCompletionData or additionalEditHandler, so choosing an unimported type alias inserts its name without adding the import.
Give it the same import handling as the classifier branch.

| private fun scopedToActive(query: IndexQuery): IndexQuery { | ||
| val visible = visibleSourceIds()?.toSet() ?: return query |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: scopedToActive copies the whole active set into IndexQuery.sourceIds on every query, and SQLiteIndex splits it into one statement per 900 bound ids.
For the Kotlin source index the active set is every project .kt file (ScanningWorker calls setActiveSources). On a 3,000-file project, each completion keystroke copies and sorts 3,000 paths twice (exact stage, then prefix stage), and each stage issues up to 4 statements of 900 parameters where the old code issued 1. The correctness reason in the KDoc is right. The cost falls on the keystroke hot path and is unmeasured. This is graded PLAUSIBLE because I did not time it.
Fix: keep the active set in a temp table (or a _sources.active column) and join on it, so each query binds nothing per source.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip: scopedToActive still copies visibleSourceIds() into a new set on every query (FilteredIndex.kt:105 at the tip), and SQLiteIndex.sourceIdChunks re-sorts and re-chunks it (SQLiteIndex.kt:802). With several index queries per completion keystroke, that is the whole active set copied and sorted on every keystroke, although it only changes on sync or build.
Cache the sorted chunks when the active set is replaced.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at d919500 and at the stack tip (FilteredIndex.kt:105 there): scopedToActive still copies the active set with toSet() on every query (line 95), and SQLiteIndex.kt:646 still sorts and chunks it again (toSortedSet().chunked(...)). The tip's set is immutable, so the copy buys nothing.
For the source index the active set is every project .kt file, and one completion keystroke runs several scoped queries. Keep one sorted, pre-chunked snapshot that is rebuilt only when the set changes.
| var total = 0 | ||
| for (index in indexes) { | ||
| if (total >= limit) break | ||
| for (entry in index.query(query)) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: MergedIndex passes the caller's limit to each backing index unchanged and dedupes by key afterwards. Now that one key can have a row per source, those duplicates use up the backing index's LIMIT.
With limit = 10 and a backing index holding the same 5 classes from two JARs, the first index returns 10 rows that dedupe to 5, and the merged result is short even though that index has more unique matches. It is unreachable today: at the stack tip no production code constructs a MergedIndex (only tests do). A future consumer of the merged view would get short pages.
Fix: have each backing query over-fetch until limit unique keys are seen, or dedupe inside the SQL (GROUP BY _key).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip (MergedIndex.kt is unchanged in #2073 and #2074). It has no production caller yet, which is what keeps this MINOR, but any future caller gets fewer than limit distinct results whenever one key has rows under several sources.
Over-fetch from each index, or dedupe inside each index's query.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at d919500 and at the stack tip; MergedIndex.kt is unchanged in #2073 and #2074. Each backing index still gets the caller's limit and the dedupe by key happens afterwards (lines 30-38), so with the same key now stored once per source, repeats count against the limit and the merge returns fewer distinct rows than exist.
There is still no production MergedIndex( call, which is why this stays MINOR. Over-fetch from each backing index, or dedupe before counting toward the limit.

| private fun isIndexableClassEntry(relativePath: String): Boolean { | ||
| if (!relativePath.endsWith(".class")) return false | ||
| if (relativePath.startsWith("META-INF/")) return false |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Skipping everything under META-INF/ also drops classes that exist only under META-INF/versions/<n>/ in a multi-release JAR, not just the copies that shadow a base class.
The KDoc's rationale covers only the shadowing case: a versioned copy shares the base row's key. A class shipped only in a versioned directory has no base row to protect, so it is now missing from the index, and completion and add-import cannot find it. I could not name such a class on a typical CoGo classpath (they are usually implementation helpers), so this is graded on the mechanism, not on an observed miss.
Fix: skip a versioned entry only when its base-directory counterpart exists in the same JAR.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip: CombinedJarScanner.kt:124 still skips everything under META-INF/, so a class shipped only under META-INF/versions/<n>/ of a multi-release JAR is never indexed.
Skip a versioned entry only when the base path has the same class.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at d919500 and at the stack tip (CombinedJarScanner.kt:124 there). 46f6cae's reason for skipping META-INF/ is right for versioned copies of base classes, which would replace the base row under the same key. A class that exists only under META-INF/versions/<n>/ has no base row to protect, and it is still dropped from every lookup.
Index a versioned entry only when no base entry with the same name exists.
| @@ -129,32 +72,66 @@ object JarSymbolScanner { | |||
| isInnerClass = name.contains('$') | |||
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Nesting is still guessed from name.contains('$'), even though visitInnerClass now reads the class's own InnerClasses entry.
A top-level class with $ in its name, such as the code-generator style Foo$$ViewBinder, or $AutoValue_Foo (now indexed, since package-private classes are kept), is treated as nested. Its containingClass is made up (Foo$, or the bare package), its isTopLevel is false, and the anonymous-class check keys off the same guess. The heuristic predates this PR. This is graded PLAUSIBLE because I did not scan a JAR that has one.
Fix: set isInnerClass in visitInnerClass when name == className (an entry for the class itself is exactly what marks it nested), instead of in visit.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip: JarSymbolScanner.kt:72 still sets isInnerClass = name.contains('$'), and visitInnerClass (line 80) now corrects only the access flags. A top-level Foo$$ViewBinder or $AutoValue_Foo is still recorded as nested.
Set isInnerClass from the class's own InnerClasses entry in visitInnerClass.

| ?: "" | ||
| "${p.name}($params)" |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: fromProto rebuilds key from name and parameter typeNames instead of storing it, so a deserialized symbol's key is not the row's _key.
JarSymbolScanner stores a class under its internal name (com/foo/Bar), but it comes back as com.foo.Bar. KotlinMetadataScanner builds function keys from typeFqName, but they come back built from typeName. At the stack tip no caller looks a row up by a deserialized key: rejectedRows and dedupeKey compare deserialized keys with each other, which is consistent. get(symbol.key), or any future (source, key) row operation, would silently miss.
Fix: serialize key into the proto (jvm_symbol.proto already changes in this PR) and read it back verbatim.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip: fromProto (JvmSymbolDescriptor.kt:219 at the tip) still rebuilds key from name and the parameters' typeName, while KotlinMetadataScanner builds it from typeFqName and JarSymbolScanner stores internal names, so a deserialized symbol's key does not match its row's _key.
Store the key in the payload and read it back.

| internal val UNIMPORTED_SYMBOL_KINDS: Set<JvmSymbolKind> = | ||
| (JvmSymbolKind.CLASSIFIER_KINDS - JvmSymbolKind.COMPANION_OBJECT) + JvmSymbolKind.CALLABLE_KINDS |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: UNIMPORTED_SYMBOL_KINDS includes CONSTRUCTOR, FUNCTION and FIELD. For Java JARs every row of those kinds is a member (JarSymbolScanner sets containingClassName = className), and isUnimportedSymbolCandidate rejects every one of them. Each still counts against the SQL LIMIT of both stages.
A Java constructor row is named after its class, so findBySimpleName("StringBuilder") also returns each of its constructors, and a short prefix such as set or on matches thousands of member methods. The 300-row prefix budget can then be spent entirely on rows that are fetched, deserialized and discarded, while real classifier or top-level matches sit beyond it. That undercuts the fix this PR describes ("capped rows fetched rather than items shown"). This is graded PLAUSIBLE because I did not measure a real prefix.
Fix: push the top-level-or-extension condition into the query (an indexed containing_class = '' or is_extension term), so the limit counts only rows that can be accepted.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: Still open at head and at the stack tip, and worse than graded here: the rows the filter always rejects crowd out real candidates, not just budget.
UNIMPORTED_SYMBOL_KINDS (KotlinCompletions.kt:577 at the tip) still includes CONSTRUCTOR, FIELD and member FUNCTIONs, and isUnimportedSymbolCandidate rejects every member callable. The prefix query takes 300 rows per index with no ORDER BY (SQLiteIndex.kt:818-822), so which 300 come back is up to SQLite. For the prefix get, android.jar alone has thousands of member get* methods, so the 300 can be all members, and stdlib extensions such as getOrElse never reach accept. JAR constructors are named after their class (JarSymbolScanner.kt:180), so Str fills with String/StringBuilder constructor overloads the same way.
Put the filter in the query: classifiers, callables with no containing class, and callables with a receiver type; and drop CONSTRUCTOR and FIELD from the kinds.

| val fingerprint = jarFingerprint(File(jarPath)) | ||
| if (index.sourceFingerprint(jarPath) != fingerprint) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: Each JAR's fingerprint is read with its own withContext(IO) and SQLite query, one JAR after another, and this is still true at the stack tip. On a classpath of a few hundred JARs, one SELECT _source_id, _fingerprint FROM <table>_sources read into a map would replace all those round trips. Unmeasured, so not a defect.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: Still open at the stack tip (now JarIndexingService.kt:176), and each changed JAR's fingerprint is read twice: once in the pre-check here and again in BackgroundIndexer.isIndexed, because indexSource is called with skipIfExists = true. Dropping one of the two checks halves the reads; one bulk read of the sources table removes the per-JAR round trips.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: Still open at the stack tip (JarIndexingService.kt:174/176). The pre-check sourceFingerprint(jarPath) != fingerprint (line 131) is followed by indexSource(skipIfExists = true, fingerprint), which runs the same fingerprint query again in BackgroundIndexer.isIndexed. JvmGeneratedIndexingService.kt:116/118 does the same, and FilteredIndex.isCached no longer has a production caller. Drop the pre-checks and the dead isCached.

Stack: layer 2 of 4 (#2071 -> #2072 -> #2073 -> #2074). Comments are anchored at this PR's head c29ca5f; every claim was checked against the stack tip 780908a (#2074).
IMPORTANT
- KotlinCompletions.kt:578 - rows the filter always rejects crowd out real unimported candidates (existing thread, raised from MINOR)
- KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:332 - extension overloads share one key (existing thread)
- KotlinCompletions.kt:661 - an unimported type alias is inserted without its import (existing thread)
MINOR
- KotlinCompletions.kt:444 - the visibility walk runs before the cheap kind check
- SQLiteIndex.kt:791 - a predicate on an undeclared field is silently dropped
- FilteredIndex.kt:95 - the active set is copied and re-sorted on every query (existing thread)
- MergedIndex.kt:32 - per-index limit, deduped afterwards (existing thread)
- CombinedJarScanner.kt:98 - classes only under META-INF/versions are skipped (existing thread)
- JarSymbolScanner.kt:72 - nesting guessed from '$' (existing thread)
- JvmSymbolDescriptor.kt:219 - fromProto rebuilds a different key (existing thread)
NITPICK - 2 (1 inline, 1 in an existing thread)
Previous round, checked at the stack tip:
- Fixed higher in the stack: the JarFile not closed when a scan is cancelled. #2073 wraps the scan in a CloseableSequence.
- Not fixed, replied in thread: the other 9 findings.
Evidence (REVIEW.md):
- Ticket: ADFA-6228 asks to stop duplicating the per-module ClassTrie. This layer makes the JVM symbol index correct enough to replace it; #2073 and #2074 make the switch. The IMPORTANT findings are completion results the index gives differently from what it replaces.
- Exceptions: new failure paths in the scanners are caught and logged; nothing new reaches the crash handler.
- Leaks: JAR handles on cancellation are fixed in #2073 (above). Not run on a device.
- Threading: completion-path cost covered above (visibility walk, per-query set copies). StrictMode not run.
- Security: JAR entry paths are read, not written; no zip-slip surface.
- Tests: no test pins the unimported-completion starvation or the extension-key collision. Coverage not measured.
- Accessibility, contextual help, plugins: no UI or plugin API changes.
Verdict rule: REVIEW.md describes itself as "a coaching doc, not a gate" and sets no approve/request-changes rule, so the default applied.

| for ((field, values) in query.anyOf) { | ||
| val col = fieldColumns[field] ?: continue |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: A predicate on a field the descriptor does not declare is silently dropped (fieldColumns[field] ?: continue), so SQLiteIndex widens the query while InMemoryIndex returns nothing for the same query.
anyOf, new in this layer, repeats the pattern of exactMatch above, and contradicts its own empty-list case two lines down, which scopes to nothing (0 = 1). A typo such as anyOf("kinds", ...) for "kind" returns every row in scope from SQLite, and a test written against InMemoryIndex still passes. I found no production query naming an undeclared field, so this is latent.
Fail fast with require(field in fieldColumns) instead of continue.

| val isVisible = | ||
| visibilityChecker.isVisible( |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: The module-visibility check runs before the cheap kind and top-level check, so every row that buildUnimportedSymbolItem will reject first pays for findModuleForSourceId plus a dependency-graph walk.
addCompletionItem calls visibilityChecker.isVisible here and only then buildUnimportedSymbolItem, whose first line rejects member callables, constructors and fields: most rows for a common prefix, out of up to 3 indexes x (100 exact + 300 prefix) per keystroke. SymbolVisibilityChecker.moduleVisibilityCache is read (line 39) but never written, so nothing is reused between rows. No latency was measured, hence MINOR.
Call isUnimportedSymbolCandidate(symbol) before isVisible, and populate moduleVisibilityCache.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Partly fixed at d919500, same at the stack tip. The queries now filter kind and top-level in SQL (JvmSymbolIndex.kt:123-124), so rows isUnimportedSymbolCandidate would reject no longer reach this point.
Still open: isVisible (lines 439-446) runs before buildUnimportedSymbolItem, so an extension whose receiver does not match the implicit receivers (lines 614-629) still pays findModuleForSourceId and a module-graph walk first. SymbolVisibilityChecker.moduleVisibilityCache is read at line 39 and never written, so that walk is never cached. That file is outside this diff.
Run the receiver check before isVisible, and write the cache when the walk finishes.

| return KotlinClassMetadata.readStrict(header) |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: The strict read adds nothing. readLenient returns the same result for supported metadata versions and also reads newer ones, so for a dependency built with a newer Kotlin every class throws once in readStrict and is then parsed a second time. readLenient alone gives the same symbols with half the work.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: Still open at d919500 and at the stack tip: readMetadata still tries readStrict (line 103) and falls back to readLenient (line 108). For supported versions the two return the same result, so the strict attempt only adds a caught exception per newer-version class. Call readLenient alone.

Stack: layer 2 of stage <- #2071 <- #2072 <- #2073 <- #2074. Claims were checked at this head (d919500) and at the stack tip (765c699), following renames (for example JvmLibraryIndexingService -> JarIndexingService).
Fixed since the last round, checked in the code at d919500:
- A predicate on an undeclared field now throws (
Query.kt:74-78,SQLiteIndex.kt:762);InMemoryIndex.distinctValuesis the gap above. - Constructors, fields and member callables no longer crowd the unimported-symbol query (
KotlinCompletions.kt:586-598). - Extension callables are keyed by their receiver (
KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:332). Type arguments are still not in the key, so receivers that differ only in type arguments share a row; the import is the same, so this is harmless. - A type alias chosen from completion imports itself (
KotlinCompletions.kt:643-647). - Java nesting comes from
InnerClasses, not a$in the name (JarSymbolScanner.kt:72, 89-90). fromProtoreads the stored key (JvmSymbolDescriptor.kt:59, 211).
Open at this head but fixed higher in the stack, so not posted:
- A JAR scan that stops part-way left its
JarFileopen (round 1,CombinedJarScanner.kt:62); #2073 closes it throughCloseableSequence(7ed612f). FilteredIndex.setActiveSourcesclears and refills the set without a lock; #2073 replaces it with one volatile assignment.
Checked and not posted: the 999-parameter SQLite limit (the largest statement any caller builds is about 915 arguments), and key lookups taking the smallest source id rather than classpath order (no production caller depends on which duplicate wins).
No CRITICAL or IMPORTANT finding is open. The repo has no written approve/request-changes rule (REVIEW.md asks that a blocking comment name a concrete risk, and none of these does), and the requester asked to approve when only MINOR and NITPICK findings remain, so an approval follows.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: distinctValues returns nothing for an undeclared field here, while SQLiteIndex.distinctValues throws (SQLiteIndex.kt:264-265), so d919500's guard against misspelt fields has a hole in one implementation.
A test written against InMemoryIndex with a typo such as distinctValues("pakage", query) passes with an empty result, and the same call throws in production. There is no production InMemoryIndex at the stack tip and every caller passes KEY_PACKAGE, so nothing hits it today.
Throw IllegalArgumentException here as SQLiteIndex does.

| // this one touches its rows, so the two passes' writes never interleave. | ||
| previousJob?.join() |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: The promise that the two passes' writes never interleave holds for two jobs, not three: previousJob?.join() throws as soon as the waiting job is itself cancelled.
A (fingerprint F1) is running; B cancels A and waits here; C cancels B, so B's join throws, B completes, and C's join returns while A may still be committing. A can land the batch it already passed ensureActive() for in SQLiteIndex.insertBatched after C's removeBySource, and C then records F3, so those F1 rows are never re-indexed. It needs A stalled between ensureActive and the lock across two more submissions with different fingerprints, and submissions come from finished builds seconds apart, so no real sequence opens the window today.
Wrap the join in withContext(NonCancellable).

There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Nesting now comes from InnerClasses, but the nested class's fqName is still built by turning every $ into ., so a $ that belongs to a name becomes a separator.
Foo$$ViewBinder$InnerUnbinder gets fqName com.x.Foo..ViewBinder.InnerUnbinder, and JvmSymbol.toFqName does the same for a top-level Foo$$ViewBinder. At the stack tip ModuleClasspathLookup (qualifiedNamesByPrefix, children) hands that fqName to Java completion and import, which would insert a name that does not compile. Only annotation-processor output names classes this way (ButterKnife $$ViewBinder, Parceler $$Parcelable), which is why this stays MINOR.
Build the name from outerName and innerName here, and keep $ in top-level names.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: A nested class whose own name starts with $ gets a containing class with a trailing $: the short name is cut at the last $, but removed from the internal name as if only one separator preceded it.
kotlinx.serialization's Foo.$serializer (internal name com/x/Foo$$serializer) gives shortName serializer, containingClassName com/x/Foo$ and fqName com.x.Foo..serializer. Nothing reads the containing class in a way that breaks today: KEY_CONTAINING_CLASS is only tested for absence, and findMembersOf has no production caller. The wrong fqName predates this PR (stage also split on $), but every @serializable class in a dependency produces one, and an import built from it does not compile.
Split the metadata name on . only; the comment above already says that is how metadata nests.

NITPICK: "stops treating a top-level class with '$' in its name as nested" holds for the Java scanner only. KotlinMetadataScanner still splits on $ on purpose (its comment at lines 168-172), so this version note tells a reader the opposite for Kotlin classes. Say "Java classes" here, or drop the Kotlin split (see the comment on KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:174).

Approving: no CRITICAL or IMPORTANT finding is open at d919500, and the three IMPORTANT findings from the last round are fixed. The MINOR findings are in their threads and are safe to merge; the two $ naming ones (KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:174, JarSymbolScanner.kt:92) matter most once #2074 makes the index the only source for class lookups.

A ClassTrie is per module while the symbol index is global and keyed by JAR path, so "classes on module X's classpath" needs `sourceId IN (X's JARs)`, which a single `sourceId` cannot express. The scoped SELECT is chunked the way `removeBySources` already chunks its DELETE, because a module's classpath can exceed SQLite's bound-parameter limit. Chunks are disjoint on `_source_id`, so no row is returned twice and each statement can take what remains of the limit. `null` and an empty collection mean different things: no restriction at all versus a scope that admits nothing. Keeping them distinct is what lets a caller pass a computed scope without having to special-case the empty result.
A defect on stage, not a consequence of the index migration, but fixed here because moving completion onto this index would otherwise inherit it. `FilteredIndex.query` called `backing.query(query)`, which had already appended `LIMIT` in SQL, and only then dropped rows from inactive sources. So a query for 200 could return zero while hundreds of matching active rows sat past the SQL limit -- the limit was spent on rows the caller was never allowed to see. The fix rewrites the query's scope instead of filtering its results, so the limit counts only rows that already survived filtering. No second filter is layered on top; that would just move the problem. That changes the extension contract. Testing one id is no longer enough, because the scope now has to be *described* to the backing index. So `visibleSourceIds` is the overridable member, `null` means every source is visible, and `isActive` derives from it and is final -- an override that could not be honoured now fails to compile instead of silently hiding every entry. `get` and `containsSource` are unaffected: both are point operations with no limit to spend, and tests pin that they still refuse an inactive source.
The consumers that navigate the package tree do not look names up; they ask what sits directly under a package. Answering that needs every package under a prefix, and the existing `distinctValues(field)` takes no query at all -- no source scope, no prefix -- so the only way to narrow it was to fetch the matching entries and reduce them in memory, which is the materialisation this work exists to avoid. `distinctValues(field, query)` scans one column instead. Values are deduplicated across source chunks as well as by SQL, since DISTINCT applies only within a statement and one package name legitimately appears in many JARs. It also closes the gap `FilteredIndex.distinctValues` documented in a comment: it passed straight through to the backing index, so it reported values from sources that were not active. It now carries the same scope as `query`. Dropping `InMemoryIndex`'s own override removes a stale-value bug with it -- that one read the field map's keys, which retain a value after its last entry has been removed.
… _ as a wildcard `LIKE 'prefix%'` cannot use the column's index here. SQLite only rewrites LIKE into a range scan when `case_sensitive_like` is on or the column collates NOCASE, and this schema has neither, so every prefix query was a full table scan. Measured against a 400k-row table shaped like the JVM symbol index, the range form answers the same query in 0.04ms against 3.9ms - and this runs on every completion keystroke. The escaped LIKE stays beside the range bounds as the semantic guard. `_` and `%` are legal identifier characters, so an unescaped pattern silently widened the match: a prefix of `my_f` also returned `myXfield`. The prefix match on a non-prefix-searchable column was case-insensitive, which contradicted both its own comment and `InMemoryIndex`, whose fallback has always used `startsWith`. The two agree now.
…classes correctly Three gaps between what the scanners record and what a classpath actually holds. Each would have shown up as a silent narrowing when class lookup moves off the classpath trie and onto this index. Facades were missing entirely. Metadata for `FileFacade` and `MultiFileClassFacade` describes a package, not a class, so `FooKt` -- the class Java calls a Kotlin file's top-level functions through -- had no entry at all. It gets one now, under a new `FILE_FACADE` kind so the two languages can disagree about it: Java needs to import it, Kotlin must never offer it as a type. That is why the kind is in `JVM_CLASS_KINDS` and not in `CLASSIFIER_KINDS`, and why `isJvmClass` asks whether a class file exists rather than whether Java would want it. Part classes (`FooKt__Part`) stay out; their declarations belong to the facade and neither language names the part. Package-private classes were dropped. The trie held every top-level class in a JAR regardless of visibility, so same-package completion would have lost candidates. They are recorded with `PACKAGE_PRIVATE` visibility for callers to filter on. Private classes stay out, and members are still gated on the class being public or protected. Kotlin nested classes were wrong twice over. Kotlin metadata separates a nested class from its outer one with '.', not '$', so splitting only on '$' left `Regex.Companion` as the short name, which no prefix search for `Companion` could match. `containingClassName` was never set either, so every nested Kotlin class reported `isTopLevel == true` -- and a top-level filter is exactly what a class-name query needs.
…ng it by reference
…e KDoc visibleSourceIds() is the only extension point since filtering reads it, not isActive(); activeSources() itself is no longer meant to be overridden.
… zero meaning unlimited
… bound - Make the source-id chunk size an internal constructor parameter so a small size can exercise the multi-statement path in tests; Robolectric's SQLite allows far more than 999 bound parameters, so the existing 2100-id test passed even with chunking deleted. - Query each distinctValues chunk with the full limit instead of the remaining budget: a value repeating across chunks could otherwise exhaust that budget before a later chunk's still-unseen values were read. - Increment exclusiveUpperBound by Unicode code point instead of raw UTF-16 code unit: incrementing only a supplementary character's trailing low surrogate produced a bound below the prefix itself, so a matching row was excluded outright. - Fix the escaped LIKE guard's stale rationale: the range already rejects a literal '_' or '%' substituted for another character; the LIKE guard only matters when the range's bound is carried or absent.
A new indexSource call now cancelAndJoin's the previous job for that source before deleting its rows, so a superseded pass can never write after the new one has already replaced them. A call whose fingerprint matches an already-running job is folded into that job instead of restarting it, and a job that loses the race no longer clears the newer job's active-job entry on its own completion.
SQLiteIndex.insertBatched never checked cancellation, and its mutex's uncontended fast path never suspends, so a cancelled indexing job kept committing batches until its scan finished. Adding an explicit check before each transaction bounds how much a superseded job can still write once cancelled.
JvmGeneratedIndexingService skipped a JAR once any row existed for its path, so a JAR rewritten outside an in-app build, or left half-indexed by a killed process, stayed stale until the next build touched it. Reusing the library indexer's size+mtime fingerprint means the unconditional re-index on every build completion is no longer needed either: a JAR whose fingerprint didn't change is now skipped there too. Documents jarFingerprint's accepted limitation: a same-size rewrite within the filesystem's mtime granularity goes undetected.
createFs read the cache and then put, so several callers racing on one path each built a file system. Only the last reached the map; the others were never closed while a walk still held them, and the JARs most exposed to it are the most shared ones - kotlin-stdlib is named by 76 of this repository's modules.
32 threads racing createFs for the same JAR path each get a distinct CachedJarFileSystem on the pre-fix get-then-put code; computeIfAbsent guarantees they all get the same instance.
The class file header cannot carry private, protected or static, so every private nested class was indexed as package-private and every static nested class as inner. Kotlin completion derived isNested from isInner, which would have flipped for static nested classes, so it now uses isTopLevel.
…rite base classes
…a corpus The kotlin-stdlib comparison found two defects when it was written: anonymous Kotlin classes surfacing as top-level classes named `1`, and `module-info` from a multi-release JAR indexed as a class. JUnit 4 adds package-private, anonymous and nested Java classes to the same oracle.
With one shared cap over three prefix-only queries (source, generated, library), a short prefix could let the source and generated indexes fill the cap before the library index was ever queried, crowding out an exact match on the class the user is actually typing. Collect an exact simple-name match from every index first, then fill the remainder of the cap with prefix matches, deduplicated by qualified name (by full key for a callable, since two overloads share a qualified name) so a class indexed from two JARs on the active source set is offered once.
… drop stray em dashes These lines predate this branch but sit in files it touches; none has an owning commit here to fold into. Also drops a stale internal ticket reference from one comment while rewording it.
Extension overloads that differ only by receiver, such as Iterable<T>.first() and List<T>.first(), shared one key, so each source kept only the last one. The key is now stored in the payload as well: rebuilding it on read could not recover the receiver, and completion dedupes callables by key.
Constructors, Java fields and member functions were fetched and then always rejected, and with no ORDER BY they could fill the whole prefix budget, so a prefix like `get` lost real candidates such as stdlib extensions.
…he name Generated top-level classes such as Foo$$ViewBinder and $AutoValue_Foo were indexed as nested and never offered as top-level classes. Folded into the format version 3 bump this layer already makes.

Release the workers when the readiness assertion fails.
If 32 workers do not reach ready within five seconds, this assertion throws before start.countDown() and executor.shutdown(). Workers can remain blocked on start.await(), and the test process can stay alive after the failure. Release the latch and shut down the executor in a finally block. (docs.oracle.com)

2 of 4, stacked on #2071. Before the JVM symbol index can replace the per-module classpath trie, it has to give the same answers the trie gives, and give them fast. Today it does not. This PR fixes the index and migrates no consumer, so any regression here shows up in Kotlin completion alone.
Why each group of changes:
