Restore the dirty flag after a failed asynchronous write.
write() clears dirty before it queues writeFile(). If writeText() or renameTo() fails, writeFile() only logs the error. Sampler ticks update MemprofReport, but they do not call markDirty(). The existing report file can therefore remain stale while the phase continues or until another explicit write occurs.

MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip: write() clears dirty before queuing writeFile, and onFailure only logs.
A failed write (an I/O error on app-private storage, e.g. a full disk) leaves the file stale until the next phase begin/end or section end triggers another write. That keeps this MINOR rather than IMPORTANT: it recovers at the next event. It is also subsumed by the MemprofSession.kt:54 finding in this review, because ticks never set dirty in the first place.
Fix: set dirty back to true in onFailure, as suggested above.

Use this command on a human-authored review finding. CodeRabbit findings already use the standard resolution workflow.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Partly fixed: sampler ticks now mark the report dirty while a phase is open (MemprofSession.kt:60), so a failed write is retried on the next tick.
Still open once the last phase ends: no tick marks the report dirty then, and write() has already cleared dirty, so if that final write fails (a full disk, for example) the file keeps the report from before the last phase ended.
Set dirty back to true in writeFile's onFailure.

MINOR: Still open at de5f8af and at the stack tip: write() clears dirty (MemprofReportWriter.kt:54) before the io thread writes, and onFailure (line 81) only logs.
If the write that follows the last phase ending fails (a full disk, a failed rename), the file keeps the pre-end report and nothing marks it dirty again, so the next tick does not retry.
Set dirty back to true in onFailure.

Defer index-phase completion until preempted files are processed.
IndexSourceFile retries are submitted asynchronously. An already queued IndexingComplete can run first because both commands use the index queue. The phase then emits source_index_complete before the retry is indexed. The retry still runs, but it may be counted in a later phase or outside any phase.
Track pending IndexSourceFile retries and defer IndexingComplete until they finish, including repeated preemption.

IMPORTANT: Still open at head and at the stack tip. The preempted retry is still scope.launch { submitCommand(cmd) } (line 130), which appends to the 100-slot index channel.
ScanningWorker.scan() queues IndexingComplete right after the last IndexSourceFile. So a completion or diagnostics request that preempts any of the last ~100 files of a pass puts that file's retry behind IndexingComplete. source_index_complete then fires early, with indexed short by the preempted files, and the retries are indexed outside any phase. Preemption during the open is the ordinary case whenever an editor is open.
Fix: count outstanding retries and defer ending the phase until they drain, or push the retry to the front of the queue (the worker already has a single-slot pushback).

@alome007, the queue implementation confirms the ordering issue. pushBackIndexQueue() has one slot and is documented for an item already removed by pollIndexQueue(). Using it for a preempted retry would also make take() run that retry before waiting scan and edit commands. I would use outstanding-retry tracking instead.
- Track each preempted
IndexSourceFileas an outstanding retry. Repeated preemption of the same retry must not increase the count. - When
IndexingCompletearrives with outstanding retries, deferindexPhase.end(). End the phase after the last retry completes, using the finalindexedcount. - If the worker stops first, abandon the open phase as it does now.
- Add a regression test for
IndexingCompletearriving before a retry, including repeated preemption. The existing lifecycle tests do not exerciseIndexSourceFile.
The finding remains open until the change is made and verified.

IMPORTANT: Still open at head and at the stack tip. A preempted file is still re-queued with scope.launch { submitCommand(cmd) } (IndexWorker.kt:149), which appends it behind an IndexingComplete already in the index channel. Preemption happens whenever completion or diagnostics run during the initial index, so source_index_complete fires before every file is indexed and the retried files are indexed outside the phase.
Count pending retries and end the phase only once they have drained.

IMPORTANT
- IndexWorker.kt:175 - a lone ScanSourceFile opens a scan phase nothing closes
- MemprofSession.kt:54 - sampler ticks never mark the report dirty; stale on disk through the OOM-prone phase
- IndexWorker.kt:201 - a refresh lets the old IndexingComplete end the new pass's index phase
- IndexWorker.kt:155 - scanned/indexed/files are lifetime totals, not per pass
- ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:785 - a failed parse still emits PHASE|cache_parsed
- IndexWorker.kt:130 - preempted retry lands behind IndexingComplete (prior thread, still open)
MINOR
- MemprofReportWriter.kt:80 - failed write clears the dirty flag (prior thread, still open)
- IndexWorker.kt:204 - SourceScanningComplete can begin-and-end a zero-length phase, unreachable today
- ProfileableMemprofSink.kt:187 - per-file INFO lines flood GlitchTip breadcrumbs
- ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:783 - durationMs on a PHASE| line breaks MemprofLines' contract
- MemprofReceiver.kt:120 - completion op sends -1 line/column unchecked
NITPICK - 3 inline, not listed
Stack. This is layer 1 of 4: #2071 (this) <- #2072 <- #2073 <- #2074. Nothing is below it; #2072-#2074 are above. Every claim was checked against the stack tip, 5f67f3eab0 (#2074's head). None of the layers above touch the memprof sources, IndexWorker, ScanningWorker or IndexCommand, so each finding holds at the tip as well as here.
Prior round (CodeRabbit, 2 threads), re-checked at the tip, replies in each thread:
MemprofReportWriter.kt:80- failed write clearsdirty: not fixed.write()still clears it before the async write, andonFailureonly logs.IndexWorker.kt:157- preemptedIndexSourceFileretry runs afterIndexingComplete: not fixed. The retry is stillscope.launch { submitCommand(cmd) }onto the 100-slot index channel, behind anIndexingCompletethatScanningWorkerhas already queued.
Verdict rule. This repo has no written approve/request-changes rule. CLAUDE.md only ties the QA transition to "no outstanding critical, high, or medium findings", and REVIEW.md is coaching, not a gate. So the default applied: confirmed IMPORTANT findings mean request changes.
Every finding concerns the profileable variant's measurements. Debug and release builds still only pay the null check, as the PR says. The IMPORTANT findings are about the numbers the stack's before/after comparison relies on being wrong.

IMPORTANT: A failed readGradleBuild still ends "Parse project model" as completed, so PHASE|cache_parsed is emitted for a parse that failed.
readGradleBuild returns a Result, not an exception, so a corrupt or missing cache takes this branch, puts failed=1, and the block returns normally. runIn then calls end(). The harness waits on cache_parsed and sees it. MemprofSpan.abandon()'s own contract is that an interrupted phase does not emit its marker, so nothing waiting for the marker mistakes it for a finished one.
Fix: call span.abandon() when parsed.isFailure (it stays idempotent with runIn's later end()).

IMPORTANT: Sampler ticks never mark the report dirty, so the on-disk report stops updating inside any phase without sections.
writeIfDirty writes only when dirty is set. Only SectionSpan.onEnd sets it, and at the stack tip the only section is "Index Kotlin file". During "Index module classpaths and sources" (the phase where the ~164 MB trie is built, and so the one that OOMs on 512 MB devices) and "Index libraries", no tick ever writes. An OOM mid-phase leaves a file whose peak heap and elapsed time are as of the phase start. That contradicts the PR description ("still there after an OOM") and the REPORT_INTERVAL_MS KDoc ("a report pulled mid-open is current").
Fix: have onTick call reportWriter.markDirty() (or return a changed flag from report.sampled) before writeIfDirty.

IMPORTANT: scanned, indexed and files are running totals for the worker's lifetime, not per-pass counts.
scanCount and sourceIndexCount are locals of start() and are never reset. modifiedFileIndexer also increments sourceIndexCount for every debounced edit. On a second refresh in the same worker (a build completing after the open), PHASE|source_scan_complete|...|files= and source_index_complete|...|indexed= include the first pass and every edit reindex. These are the per-pass numbers #2074's before/after comparison reads.
Fix: reset both counters when a scan phase begins, and keep the edit indexer's count separate.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Partly fixed: the phases now report deltas from per-pass baselines (scannedAtScanBegin, indexedAtIndexBegin), so the counts are no longer lifetime totals.
Still open at head and at the stack tip: modifiedFileIndexer increments sourceIndexCount (IndexWorker.kt:62) from its own coroutine on Dispatchers.Default while the worker loop increments it at line 145, with no synchronization. Edits made during the initial index are counted in that pass's indexed (line 175), and the concurrent ++ can lose updates.
Count edit reindexes separately, or use an AtomicInteger and leave them out of the per-pass figure.

IMPORTANT: A lone ScanSourceFile opens a "Scan Kotlin sources" phase that nothing ever closes.
KtSymbolIndex.submitForIndexing (called from CompilationEnvironment.onFileCreated) sends ScanSourceFile + IndexSourceFile with no SourceScanningComplete. Creating a .kt file after the open therefore starts a scan phase here that stays open until the next full refresh abandons it. While it is open, report.hasOpenPhases stays true, so writer.log() never prints the report to logcat again, the report shows the phase as (in progress) indefinitely, and every later heap peak is attributed to "Scan Kotlin sources". None of the four IndexWorkerPhaseLifecycleTest cases sends a bare ScanSourceFile.
Fix: drop the fallback so a ScanSourceFile outside a scan is not a phase, and add a test that sends one on its own.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: Still open at head ccf769a and at the stack tip 780908a (IndexWorker.kt:193-195, unchanged in #2072-#2074).
CompilationEnvironment.onFileCreated and onFileChangedOnDisk still call KtSymbolIndex.submitForIndexing, which sends only ScanSourceFile + IndexSourceFile. The if (scanPhase == null) scanPhase = beginScan() branch opens "Scan Kotlin sources" with no SourceScanningComplete to end it, so report.hasOpenPhases stays true: no later phase prints the logcat report (ProfileableMemprofSink.kt:159), and the file is rewritten every 2 s until the next full scan abandons the phase.
Open the scan phase only on SourceScanningStarted, and let a lone ScanSourceFile run outside any phase.

| if (indexPhase == null) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
IMPORTANT: After a refresh, the new scan's SourceScanningComplete can reuse the previous pass's still-open index phase, which the old IndexingComplete then ends early.
WorkerQueue.take() always drains the scan channel before the index channel. Suppose refreshSources() runs (e.g. onBuildCompleted) while the previous pass still has up to 100 IndexSourceFiles plus its IndexingComplete in the index channel. The new SourceScanningComplete is taken first, sees indexPhase != null, and does not begin a new phase. The old IndexingComplete then emits source_index_complete while the new pass's files are still queued, and the new IndexingComplete finds indexPhase == null and emits nothing. The second pass is indexed outside any phase.
Fix: tag the phase with a pass/generation (e.g. carry an id on SourceScanningStarted/IndexingComplete) so a stale completion cannot end a newer pass.

IMPORTANT: Still open at head and at the stack tip, and there is a second way to hit it.
The handoff at IndexWorker.kt:220 still reuses an open index phase, and line 173 still ends whichever phase is open on the first IndexingComplete dequeued. Besides the refresh race above, ScanningWorker.kt:62 sends IndexingComplete after a cancelled scan: takeWhile { isActive } stops the loop, but the final submitCommand does not suspend while the 100-slot index channel has room, so it never checks cancellation. Every scan restarted mid-index leaves a stray marker that ends the restarted pass's "Index Kotlin sources" early.
Tag index commands with the scan pass that sent them and end only that pass's phase; guard the final submit with isActive as well.

| logger.info(MemprofLines.fileLine(nowMs, allocatedBytes, durationMs, detail, name, completed)) |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: MEMPROF|file is logged at INFO once per indexed file, and INFO lines become GlitchTip breadcrumbs.
DeviceProtectedApplicationLoader forwards INFO+ through IdeLogRouter to Sentry.addBreadcrumb, which is why AllocationSampler logs its ticks at DEBUG. A project with ~1,700 Kotlin files emits ~1,700 of these during the open being measured. They evict every other breadcrumb from the ring buffer, so an OOM or crash report from that open carries only file lines, each with a full project path. Product behaviour is unaffected, but the crash diagnostics this build is meant to collect are.
Fix: log the per-file line at DEBUG, as the sampler does (the harness reads logcat, which still shows DEBUG).

| indexPhase = beginIndexPhase() | ||
| } | ||
| (scanPhase ?: beginScanPhase()).apply { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: (scanPhase ?: beginScanPhase()).apply { ...; end() } begins and immediately ends a zero-length phase when none is open. That is exactly what the IndexingComplete branch avoids with ?.apply.
It is unreachable today: the only sender, ScanningWorker.scan(), puts SourceScanningStarted ahead of SourceScanningComplete on the same FIFO scan channel, so scanPhase is always set here. A future sender, or a Stop/restart ordering change, would emit a real PHASE|source_scan_complete for an empty scan, and the harness would read it as a finish.
Fix: scanPhase?.apply { ... }, matching IndexingComplete.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at head and at the stack tip: IndexWorker.kt:223 still has (scanPhase ?: beginScan()).apply { ...; end() }, which begins and ends a zero-length scan phase when none is open, unlike the IndexingComplete branch's ?.apply. Unreachable today, because every SourceScanningComplete follows a SourceScanningStarted from the same ScanningWorker.scan(); it becomes reachable once the lone-ScanSourceFile fix stops opening phases outside a full scan.
Use scanPhase?.apply { ... } here too.

Requesting changes for the six IMPORTANT findings in the review above: IndexWorker.kt:155, :175, :201, the preempted-retry thread at :157, MemprofSession.kt:54, and ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:785. Each one makes the profileable report or the PHASE| markers wrong on an ordinary run, and #2074's before/after numbers read from them. The MINOR and NITPICK comments do not block.

Stack: layer 1 of 4 (#2071 -> #2072 -> #2073 -> #2074). Comments are anchored at this PR's head ccf769a; every claim was checked against the stack tip 780908a (#2074), where IndexWorker, ScanningWorker, the memprof sources and this PR's probe in ProjectHandlerActivity are unchanged.
IMPORTANT
- IndexWorker.kt:193 - a lone ScanSourceFile opens a scan phase nothing closes (existing thread)
- IndexWorker.kt:220 - a stale or cancelled scan's IndexingComplete ends the next pass's index phase (existing thread)
- IndexWorker.kt:149 - preempted files are re-queued behind IndexingComplete (existing thread)
MINOR
- ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1629 - the logcat report prints at every gap between phases
- MemprofReportWriter.kt:59 - the 2 s throttle is stamped on the io thread
- AllocationSampler.kt:129 - a second dumpat never dumps
- IndexWorker.kt:62 - edit reindexes counted in the pass, unsynchronized (existing thread, partly fixed)
- MemprofReportWriter.kt:63 - a failed final write is not retried (existing thread, partly fixed)
- ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1634 - durationMs on the PHASE line (existing thread)
- MemprofReceiver.kt:120 - completion sends a -1 line/column (existing thread)
- IndexWorker.kt:223 - zero-length scan phase, unreachable today (existing thread)
NITPICK - 2, in existing threads
Previous round, checked at this head:
- Fixed: a failed readGradleBuild now abandons its phase (ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1640).
- Fixed: sampler ticks mark the report dirty while a phase is open (MemprofSession.kt:60).
- Fixed: MEMPROF|file now logs at DEBUG (ProfileableMemprofSink.kt:188).
- Partly fixed, replied in thread: per-pass counts; the dirty flag after a failed write.
- Not fixed, replied in thread: the other 8 findings listed above as existing threads.
- Not re-raised: the IndexCommand.kt reformat nit, which is about commit history and has nothing at head to change.
Evidence (REVIEW.md):
- Ticket: ADFA-6228 asks to stop duplicating the per-module ClassTrie. This layer adds the probes that measure it, and the fix lands in #2072-#2074, so these findings are about whether the before/after numbers can be trusted.
- Exceptions: probe failures are caught in ProfileableMemprofSink by design; nothing new reaches the crash handler.
- Leaks, threading: not run on a device. In code, one race (the IndexWorker counter above).
- Security: the receiver is profileable-build only; its inputs are covered above (completion line/column).
- Tests: IndexWorkerPhaseLifecycleTest does not cover a lone ScanSourceFile or a stale IndexingComplete. Coverage not measured.
- Accessibility, contextual help, plugins: no UI or plugin API changes.
Verdict rule: REVIEW.md describes itself as "a coaching doc, not a gate" and sets no approve/request-changes rule, so the default applied.

MINOR: The logcat report prints mid-open, at every gap between top-level phases, instead of once when the open finishes.
PhaseSpan.onEnd calls writer.log() whenever report.hasOpenPhases is false after a phase ends (ProfileableMemprofSink.kt:159). "Parse project model" ends here (line 1644) before manager.setup() begins "Index module classpaths and sources" (line 1659), so the whole report is logged at that gap, and again between indexing_complete and the Kotlin LS's "Scan Kotlin sources". A harness that reads the first MEMPROF|report block gets a partial open. The report file is not affected.
Print the report on an explicit end-of-open signal rather than on "no phase is open".

MINOR: Still open at de5f8af and at the stack tip: ProfileableMemprofSink.kt:159 still logs the report whenever no phase is open.
The new handoff comment in IndexWorker.kt:215-219 keeps the scan-to-index gap closed, but "Parse project model" still ends at line 1644 here before ProjectManagerImpl begins "Index module classpaths and sources", and nothing is open between indexing_complete and "Scan Kotlin sources". A harness reading the first MEMPROF|report block still gets a partial open; the report file is not affected.

MINOR: dumped is never reset, so a second dumpat in the same process is logged as armed but never produces an hprof.
The dumpat op only sets dumpAtFraction (MemprofReceiver.kt:113). After the first peak dump dumped stays true, so this check returns for the rest of the process. A harness that closes and reopens a project and sends dumpat again sees MEMPROF|dumpat|...|fraction=0.85 and no MEMPROF|hprof line, with nothing saying why.
Reset dumped in the dumpat op, or log that a dump was already taken.

| fun writeIfDirty(minIntervalMs: Long) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: The 2 s throttle reads lastWriteMs, which is only stamped on the io thread when writeFile runs, so a slow io thread lets every tick queue another render.
While a phase is open, MemprofSession marks the report dirty on every sampler tick. If one render plus write takes longer than a tick (likely near the heap ceiling, with GC pauses), lastWriteMs still holds the old time, so each tick passes this check and write() queues another full render on the unbounded single-thread executor, allocating in the heap being measured.
Stamp lastWriteMs in write(), before handing off to the io thread.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: Still open at de5f8af and at the stack tip: the throttle in writeIfDirty (MemprofReportWriter.kt:60) reads lastWriteMs, which is only stamped inside writeFile (line 74) on the io thread, and write() clears dirty before queueing.
While the io thread is stalled, every 250 ms tick that finds the report dirty queues another full render, so the backlog grows until the stall clears.
Stamp lastWriteMs (or a queued flag) in write() on the caller's thread.

Count only files indexed during the current pass.
When a refresh starts while earlier IndexSourceFile commands remain queued, WorkerQueue.take() processes the new scan commands before those older index commands. The new pass then captures its baseline, and the older commands increment its indexed count.
Increment sourceIndexCount only when inCurrentPass is true.

MINOR: Still open at de5f8af and at the stack tip 765c699: sourceIndexCount++ (IndexWorker.kt:138) runs for every INDEXED outcome, while inCurrentPass (line 133) only gates the retry bookkeeping.
Two inputs reach it. A build finishing mid-index calls refreshSources, and the cancelled pass's leftover IndexSourceFile commands are dequeued after the new pass's SourceScanningComplete has taken indexedAtIndexBegin, so they count in the new pass's indexed. A file changed on disk mid-index goes through submitForIndexing with pass = null and is counted too. Only the profiling report is wrong, but indexed is one of the before/after figures #2074 relies on.
Increment only when inCurrentPass.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@Daniel-ADFA, the supplied code still increments sourceIndexCount for every INDEXED outcome. The guard must exclude both superseded-pass commands and commands with pass = null.
- In
IndexWorker.kt, incrementsourceIndexCountonly wheninCurrentPassis true. - Add regression tests for both excluded cases. Confirm that current-pass indexing, including successful retries, still contributes to
indexed.
Thanks for clarifying the submitForIndexing path.

Learning: In the Kotlin indexing pipeline, IndexSourceFile commands with pass = null represent indexing outside a scan, including files changed on disk through submitForIndexing. In lsp/kotlin/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/lsp/kotlin/compiler/index/IndexWorker.kt, current-pass profiling counts must exclude these commands without preventing their indexing.

Stack: this is the bottom layer of stage <- #2071 <- #2072 <- #2073 <- #2074. Claims were checked at this head (de5f8af) and at the stack tip (765c699). None of the memprof, IndexWorker or ScanningWorker files change above this layer, so every status here holds at the tip.
Fixed since the last round, checked in the code at de5f8af:
- IndexWorker: a lone
ScanSourceFileno longer opens a phase (193-210). - IndexWorker: a superseded pass's
IndexingCompleteno longer ends the current phase (172), and a new scan abandons the old phases (184-186). - IndexWorker: preempted retries are counted, and the index phase ends only once they drain (101-102, 134, 148).
- IndexWorker: phases report per-pass deltas, and edit reindexes no longer touch the count (61-62, 104-105).
- IndexWorker: no zero-length scan phase (223).

There was a problem hiding this comment.
NITPICK: goAsync() here is a no-op, because pending.finish() (line 74) runs before onReceive returns.
The executor handoff is what keeps the main thread free. Finishing the PendingResult in the same call gives the broadcast no extra lifetime, so the pair and the comment around it suggest a guarantee that does not exist, and a later op that relies on it to keep the process alive will be wrong.
Drop goAsync() and finish() and keep the executor handoff.

NITPICK: netRetainedBytes names the opposite of what its KDoc says ("It is not what the stretch retained").
c9eaf9c retitled the report column to "Alloc - freed", but the property and its only reader (MemprofReport.kt:166) still say retained, which is the misreading the KDoc warns about.

Ported from the memprof harness build, which never committed them. Directory setup moved off the main thread: the provider used to call filesDir and mkdirs from onCreate.
Marker names match the memprof harness scripts, which wait on them. The Kotlin source phases start and end in different worker commands, so they are held for the life of the worker loop and abandoned if it stops first, which keeps their markers from reporting an interrupted open as complete.
A lone file re-index (onFileCreated) no longer opens a scan phase. Each ScanningWorker.scan() call tags its commands with a pass id, so an IndexingComplete left by a superseded or cancelled scan cannot end the current pass's phase. A preempted file is re-queued behind its pass's IndexingComplete, so the index phase now waits for outstanding retries.

1 of 4 (#2071, #2072, #2073, #2074). The later PRs remove the per-module classpath trie, which holds about 164 MB of duplicated heap on a project open. This PR adds the probes that measure that change on a device, so the before and after numbers come from the same instrumentation.
profileablevariant installs one, so debug and release builds get only a null check.files/memprof/and harness log lines. The report is written to disk as the run goes, so it is still there after an OOM, which is how an open fails on 512 MB devices. Phases are also emitted asandroid.os.Tracesections for Perfetto, but that path is not yet verified on a device (see below).phase { }andsection { }take a block, so a begin cannot go without its end. An exception or early exit is recorded as abandoned.Verified on a moto g34 (profileable build): phase markers, report file, no crash or ANR. Not verified: the Perfetto sections. That ROM records native trace markers but no Java
android.os.Traceoutput from any process, the framework's own included. The before/after measurements in #2074 come from the report file and do not depend on Perfetto.
