First of four PRs replacing #2903. Based directly on origin/main (3a37d23).

Removes CommonJS outputs and exports, stops publishing sourcemaps and test/build artifacts, and narrows the package files lists while retaining necessary assets and CSS. This is the packaging change only; emoji and AI changes follow in separate PRs.

Breaking change: consumers must use ESM imports rather than CommonJS require(). Sourcemaps are no longer published.

Verified: @blocknote/core and @blocknote/react builds. Package versions remain at 0.55.0 from main. Package-size numbers from the original PR have not been reused because this stack was rebuilt on a newer main.

Original work: #2903.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Package Compatibility
    • Package entry points now resolve to ES modules. CommonJS require imports are no longer supported.
  • Package Contents
    • Published package contents are more selectively curated, including source files where applicable and excluding tests, fixtures, source maps, and other development artifacts.
    • Some stylesheet subpath exports have been removed.
  • Build Output
    • Package builds no longer generate source maps and produce ES module output only.

Walkthrough

Build configurations across the listed packages now disable source maps and emit ES modules only. Package metadata updates published-file exclusions and entry points, removing CommonJS require targets. The xl-ai-server package also specifies sideEffects entries.

Changes: ESM-only package distribution

Layer / File(s) Summary
ES-only build outputs
packages/*/vite.config.ts, packages/core/vite.config.bundled.ts, packages/*/tsconfig.json, packages/dev-scripts/tsconfig.json
Vite library builds now emit ES modules with .js filenames and disable source maps. TypeScript source map generation is also disabled. UMD global mappings and CommonJS filename branches are removed.
Package entries and published files
packages/*/package.json
Package entry points and exports now use ESM targets without require conditions. Published-file lists exclude selected CommonJS files, maps, tests, fixtures, and build metadata. The xl-ai-server package lists its side-effectful entries explicitly.

Explanation

The title "perf!: publish ESM-only packages without sourcemaps and test artifacts" matches the main change. The PR removes CommonJS outputs and exports, stops publishing sourcemaps, and narrows package file lists to exclude test and build artifacts. The title is specific and uses a conventional commit prefix. It is a little long at 70 characters, but it is clear.

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 19 files. (18 skipped: 18 unsupported.)

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description summarizes the change, the breaking change for CommonJS consumers, and the stacked-PR context. It also states verification steps for @blocknote/core and @blocknote/react. It does not follow the template: the Rationale, Changes, Impact, Testing, Screenshots/Video, Checklist, and Additional Notes headings are missing. The Rationale and Impact content is only partly covered, and the checklist is absent.

Resolution

Restructure the description to follow the repository template. Add these sections: Rationale (why drop CommonJS and sourcemaps, and the size benefit or its absence), Changes (a list of the major package.json, tsconfig.json, and vite.config changes), Impact (the breaking change for require() consumers, the missing sourcemaps, and the loss of the Node 20.19+ and 22.12+ require() path that the reviewer raised), Testing (the build steps run and any require()/import() checks on the published entries), Screenshots/Video (mark as not applicable), and the Checklist (tick or note each item). Consider also addressing the reviewer's suggestion to add a default export condition next to import.

Recommendation: add a default condition next to import in each JavaScript export. For example:

".": {
  "types": "./types/src/index.d.ts",
  "import": "./dist/blocknote.js",
  "default": "./dist/blocknote.js"
}

Why:

  • With only import, require("@blocknote/core") fails on all Node versions with ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED. No condition matches require.
  • With default, require() works on Node 20.19+ and 22.12+, because these versions can require() an ES module. I tested require() and import() of all published entries on Node 22.14, 23.11 and 24.18.
  • This keeps CommonJS apps working (for example Jest setups and older Next.js server code), and we do not publish a CommonJS build.

@nperez0111 see above comment from mr. C, might be good to review. But let's go ESM only, great to have this merged

- Line 65: Update the versioning build configuration near the formats setting
and the corresponding ./versioning export in package.json so the require
condition no longer points to the unbuilt versioning.cjs file; remove that
condition, or use a default condition targeting versioning.js if modern Node
require interoperability is intended.
