fix(web): preserve Connect environments on unreachable auth at launch - #24642
Offline startup can make Clerk look signed out and delete saved T3 Connect environments. Preserve those routes while Clerk has only an empty or cookie-fallback client; remove them after a real client confirms no session, explicit sign-out, or account switching.
Launching the desktop app while offline deletes saved T3 Connect environments (https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/17917). Clerk finishes loading signed out when the network is down. ManagedRelayAuthProvider (apps/web/src/cloud/managedAuth.tsx) treated that first observation as a sign-out, because observedAccountRef starts as undefined and the check was previousAccount !== null. It then ran removeRelayEnvironments, which deletes every environment whose only route is T3 Connect. They do not come back when the network returns.
Expected: being offline at launch leaves saved environments alone; the relay session just stays inactive.
Change
Account cleanup now runs only after this session has observed a signed-in account (previousAccount !== undefined && previousAccount !== null). A first signed-out observation only deactivates the relay session, which it already did. A real sign-out (signed in, then signed out) and an account switch (A, then B, unchanged branch) still remove relay environments and reset the token cache.
Scope and approval
Fixes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/17917. This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious data-loss bug: one condition in one file plus a regression test. It follows the fix suggested in the issue and does not change how sign-out or account switching behave.
Verification
Added three cases to apps/web/src/cloud/managedAuth.test.ts that render ManagedRelayAuthProvider with useAuth and useAtomCommand mocked:
Clerk loading, then loaded signed out (the offline launch state from the issue): removeRelayEnvironments is not called. On main this case fails (expected "vi.fn()" to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times); with the fix it passes.
Signed in as account-1, then signed out: cleanup runs once.
account-1, then account-2: cleanup runs once and the relay session moves to account-2.
vp test run src/cloud/managedAuth.test.ts: 5/5 pass. vp lint and vp fmt --check on the touched files, plus tsc-rs --noEmit for apps/web: clean.
A separate Codex review (gpt-6.1-sol, high effort) found no correctness issues. It also checked StrictMode effect replay and isLoaded going back to false.
Not checked: I did not run an end-to-end offline launch. That needs a real Clerk key, a T3 Connect account with a saved relay environment, and network toggling, which would also mean using real credentials in evidence. I also did not verify Clerk's offline behavior myself; I relied on the issue's diagnosis of @clerk/clerk-js. The test reproduces the auth state the issue describes (loaded, signed out, no prior account), so there are no screenshots. One remaining edge: if a user's Clerk session ends while the app is closed, saved relay environments now stay until they sign in again or remove them, instead of being deleted at launch.

The original guard also retained definitive signed-out launches. The replacement distinguishes Clerk's fallback client from a hydrated client and listens for later resource updates. Cleanup now uses the same atom registry as the rendered client, so confirmed cleanup updates the list immediately.
Rendered tests now use the repository's Chromium test runner; account-switch coverage verifies cleanup completes before activation.
Chromium 148.0.7778.96 on Xvfb; no device emulation, DPR 1, normal font scale; 1440×1000 and 390×844, light/dark. Actual SDK lanes intercept installed Clerk 6.40.0; deterministic transition lanes are labeled HARNESS AUTH STATE. Synthetic IndexedDB data only.
Direct routes survive; unresolved relay routes retained

Unchanged signed-in-placeholder and rapid-cancellation controls run in three baseline cells and all four after cells; the duplicate baseline 390-dark supplement is not claimed. These nonvisual controls do not need separate width/theme tours. Affected cleanup and preservation paths cover all eight cells.
Final-merge visual addendum · Final-merge audit: SUFFICIENT
The addendum compares current main with the final head, including main's new Sign in publishing control. The complete transition matrix below remains pinned to its earlier captured SHA.
What else changed: retained relay rows include their disconnected error details; mixed-route subtitles and route counts differ; card heights, lower control positions and scroll extent follow the retained rows. Confirmed cleanup now updates the visible list immediately because it uses the rendered app's atom registry. No new UI styling or layout rules. The final-merge addendum also records main's publishing control update; this upstream change is common to both final comparison revisions. A preexisting Authorized clients label/action overlap at 390 px is visible on both revisions; environment-list companions remain readable.

Main at 76da264a0c retained the faulty initial cleanup; the regression fails there.
Five independent Codex/Claude review rounds: fixed definitive cold rejection, offline empty-resource success, and degraded recovery; both round-five reviewers returned MERGE at 65637ec020.
Six focused Chromium auth-transition tests (including the correct-registry regression) and one existing unit test pass; targeted lint, formatting and web typecheck pass.
No token storage/sending, sign-in or access-validity rules changed. This is local saved-route cleanup around unresolved auth state.
Bootstrap HTTP401 leaves Clerk unloaded and preserves routes on both revisions. Refresh401 after an observed account and a successful no-session client response are separate verification cases.
CI: pending on final merge head 44b82a0d96. Main merged without rebasing; seven scoped tests and targeted lint pass after the merge.
Unverified: live T3 Connect service, real OAuth/account switching, signed-in SDK refresh401 → sign-out, executed JWT fallback, and hosted deployment. Web is the sole changed client surface; no native surface changes.
Independent replay: live-cleanup endpoint matches at zero pixels; unresolved retry countdown differs by 89 pixels (64 above 16/255), disclosed as dynamic text rather than antialiasing.
Clerk's internal fallback ID is version-sensitive; browser runtime can track CDN major 6 separately from Electron's installed SDK.
Friction and exclusions: see the linked audits and replay indexes for SDK fallback assumptions, browser-test conventions, registry mismatch, capture overload/onboarding, timestamp normalization, stale-manifest repair, and main drift.

An offline launch where Clerk loads signed out must keep saved T3 Connect

Clerk can finish loading signed out while the device is offline. The
managed relay provider treated that first observation as a sign-out and
removed every saved relay environment. Only clean up after a signed-in
account was observed in this session.

…nnect environments
Offline, Clerk loads "degraded" from local state and often reports signed out,
so cleanup now waits for a "ready" status before treating a cold sign-out as
real, and stays unresolved until then.

…nvironments
Clerk 6.40 resolves fetches that fail while navigator.onLine is false to null,
so initialization still reports "ready" with an empty client. Only treat a
signed-out "ready" load as Clerk's answer when the client carries the id every
/v1/client response includes.

… Connect environments
Clerk's status cannot prove its API answered. A real /v1/client response can
arrive while the status stays degraded, so recognize it by its client id and
exclude the client_init placeholder Clerk builds from the session cookie.

ManagedRelayAuthProvider mounts above AppAtomRegistryProvider, so its
context-bound cleanup command ran on the default registry. IndexedDB lost the
relay environments while the rendered app kept showing them until reload. Run
the cleanup on appAtomRegistry, like session activation already does.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes production authentication-state handling and cleanup of persisted relay environments, and it also adds the auth file to a static-analysis permission exception. Those sensitive auth and lint-override changes warrant human review despite the focused scope and regression coverage.

The provider subscribes to Clerk client changes and leaves account state unresolved until there is an account or Clerk confirms sign-out. Tests verify that degraded startup and a ready state without a confirmed client do not trigger cleanup or set an active account.
