ADFA-3305

Reads Brotli-compressed templates from documentation version 3. Builds on #2163, so it targets fix/ADFA-3305-tooltip-schema, and ships with it: version 3.0.0 now means keyed tooltips and compressed templates, written by OfflineDocumentationTools' ship-time steps.

Why

The ADFA-3305 conversion of the a/ class pages adds about 1,000 templates (12 MB as text). Measured on the full database with every template compressed and the dictionary re-minted, it saves 7.47 MB of file and 7.55 MB of .br. The app reads templates as plain text today.

Change

  • DatabaseTemplateLoader passes each row's bytes through a decode before Pebble sees them, so included templates are covered too. A decode failure is logged with the template's name and the database's path, and fails the page with Cannot decode template '<name>', a message with no file name, since it reaches HTTP responses.
  • DocumentationContentSource decodes with the active database's codec when it declares major >= 3 (expectsCompressedTemplates). Below 3, and with no version, templates are read as plain UTF-8, as today: an app update never replaces the installed database, and the installed 2.x file renders 3,490 pages through templates. The answer is read once per database, before the engine runs, and cleared on every swap.
  • No per-row marker: the declared version is the marker, and nothing on the device writes Templates.
  • Test seam: an internal constructor takes the decode, because :common's tests have no brotli4j desktop native.
  • docs/documentation-database.md updated.

Tests

  • CompressedTemplateTest (new, :app, real Brotli), 7 tests:
    • a compressed template renders;
    • an included template is decoded too;
    • a version 2 plain template renders;
    • a version 3 template that does not decode fails its page and is logged;
    • swaps from v3 to v3 (two dictionaries), from v2 to v3, and from v3 to v2.
  • :common: DatabaseTemplateLoaderTest +3 (decode applied, failure wrapped by name, failure logged with the database) and DocumentationContentSourceTest +7.
    • The new tests cover v2, no version, v3, an undecodable v3 template, a version read failure, and swaps both ways.
    • The test helpers now declare version 3.
  • The unchanged WebServerTest bookshelf test pins the no-version plain path.
  • Without the fix (no template decoded): 13 tests fail, each for the reason it is named for.
  • Mutants: 11 of 11 caught:
    • every template decoded whatever the version;
    • threshold at 2;
    • flag kept across a swap;
    • no dictionary;
    • decode failure unwrapped;
    • no log;
    • log without the database;
    • no version treated as compressed;
    • version not read before the render;
    • and two existing swap guards (codec, compiled templates).
  • Results: :common documentation 66, :app localWebServer 62, :idetooltips 12, :plugin-manager all passing. spotlessCheck clean. :app:assembleV8Debug builds.

Not covered

  • No font-scale check needed: no UI change.

Device check

On 2026-10-19 (Pixel 6 Pro, Android 17), this build with the ship-time database from OfflineDocumentationTools'
steps (3.0.0, compressed templates) as the debug override:

Release

Merge with #2163, and ship in the same switch as the 3.0.0 database.

From documentation version 3 every Templates row is Brotli-compressed against
the database's CompressionDictionary, like a brotli Content row. No column says
so: the release build compresses every template, and nothing on the device
writes Templates.

- DatabaseTemplateLoader passes each row's bytes through a decode before
  Pebble sees them, so included templates are covered too. A decode failure
  is logged with the template's name and the database's path, and fails the
  page with a message that names the template but no file, since that message
  reaches HTTP responses.
- DocumentationContentSource decodes with the active database's codec when
  the database declares major >= 3 (expectsCompressedTemplates). Below 3, and
  with no version, templates are read as plain UTF-8 as before: an app update
  never replaces the installed database, so a 2.x file keeps rendering its
  templated pages. The answer is read once per database, before the engine
  runs, and cleared on every swap.
- An internal constructor takes the decode, so :common's tests, which have no
  brotli4j desktop native, can stand one in; CompressedTemplateTest in :app
  covers the real decode.

Independent Claude review (head 2bb16a6)

The change does what its body says. There is one way into a template, DatabaseTemplateLoader.getReader, and every page, include and named template (bookshelf) goes through it. It decodes a row only when the active database's newest version row declares major 3 or later, with that database's own codec, and reads every other row as plain UTF-8. The flag is read once per database, before the engine runs, and cleared with the codec and the compiled templates on every swap. Everything that touches it runs under the read lock that a swap excludes. On real data the gate picks the right path for both shipped shapes:

  • the ship-time build (3.0.0): all 1,126 templates decode as decompressTemplate decodes them (brotli4j 1.18.0, attachDictionary on an exact-size direct buffer) to strict UTF-8, and none decodes without the dictionary;
  • the 2026-10-18 database (2.0.0): its 6 plain templates are not Brotli streams, so reading them plain is the only way.

The findings are a test gap on the line the PR rewrote, and stale text in the docs and the body.

ID Sev file:line Finding
R2164-01 low DatabaseTemplateLoader.kt:105; tests No test pins the decoded text's charset; 631 real templates hold U+00A0
R2164-02 nit docs/documentation-database.md:85, :95 "Trained once ... never retrained" and "the Kotlin doc set's pages" are stale
R2164-03 nit PR body "3,490 pages" and "about 1,000 templates" don't match the databases

R2164-01. The PR rewrote return StringReader(text.toString(Charsets.UTF_8)), but no test fails if the decoded bytes are read in another charset. I replaced UTF_8 with ISO_8859_1, and all 66 :common documentation tests and all 62 :app localWebServer tests still passed. Every template text in the tests is ASCII. Real templates are not:

  • 640 of the ship-time build's 1,126 hold non-ASCII text. 631 of those hold U+00A0, and others hold U+2026, U+2014, U+2019 and U+00A9.
  • In the 2.0.0 database, layout.pebble holds U+00A9 and helpmanual-topic.peb holds U+FEFF.

Read as ISO-8859-1, a U+00A0 (bytes C2 A0) renders as "Â" plus a no-break space on every page that includes one of those 631 templates, and the suite stays green. Fix: in CompressedTemplateTest and DatabaseTemplateLoaderTest, give one compressed template and one plain template non-ASCII text, and assert the rendered bytes. The gap existed before on the plain path, but this is the line the PR changed.

R2164-02. Line 85 says CompressionDictionary is "Trained once ... (never retrained after that ...)". OfflineDocumentationTools' remint_dictionary.py, on main, retrains it and recompresses every Content row against the new one. From version 3, ODT #48 recompresses every template too. This PR makes templates depend on that dictionary, so the rule a reader now needs is the opposite one: a re-mint is safe only if it carries the templates across. Line 95, which this PR edits, still calls the templated rows "the Kotlin doc set's pages". The 2.0.0 database also renders 359 i/ pages through templates, and the 3.0.0 build 12,827 a/ pages. Fix both sentences here, since this PR is what ties templates to the dictionary.

R2164-03. The body has two figures that don't match the databases:

  • Pages: it says "the installed 2.x file renders 3,490 pages through templates". The 2026-10-18 2.0.0 database has 3,863 (3,504 k/ and 359 i/). The local assets/documentation.db copies are older still and have no templateId column, so I could not find which file gives 3,490.
  • Templates: it says the a/ conversion "adds about 1,000 templates (12 MB as text)". The ship-time build adds 1,120: android-reference.peb and 1,119 includes. Its 1,126 templates hold 12.19 MB of text.

Fix: name the file each figure comes from, or use these.

Checked and sound

  • Version gate: expectsCompressedTemplates reads DatabaseVersionResolver.resolveMajorVersion, which orders by changeTime DESC, rowid DESC and does not catch. A read failure is therefore not cached: it propagates from renderNamed's pre-read as itself, and the next render asks again. No version, a NULL major, or one below 3 reads plain.

  • Read paths:

    • DatabaseTemplateLoader is the only reader of Templates.content. templateName reads only name.
    • renderNamedTemplate (WebServer's /pr/bs bookshelf) and render (Content rows) both reach it through renderNamed, under the read lock. Includes resolve by name through the same loader.
    • Nothing in CodeOnTheGo writes Templates. PluginDocumentationManager inserts Content rows with no templateId (default 0) and reads CompressionDictionary only to compress plugin rows.
    • The only other PebbleEngine, in templates-impl, renders project templates from zip files, not this database.
  • Swap and cache: switchToDatabase (write lock) nulls the codec, sets the flag back to null and clears the compiled templates and names. A v3 to v3 swap, which brings a different dictionary, and both v2/v3 directions are tested, and the mutants on each are killed.

  • Missing dictionary in a 3.x file: loadCompressionDictionary returns null with a warning. The templates are then decoded without it, which fails with "corrupted input". The page fails as Cannot decode template '<name>', and the log line carries the name and the database's path. The message reaching HTTP has no path.

  • A 2.x install after an app update: templates stay plain and the dictionary-compressed Content rows decode, so templated pages keep rendering (tested). Tooltips are refused, as ADFA-3305: Read and write the keyed tooltip tables (documentation schema 3.0.0) #2163 accepts.

  • Release coupling: a file declaring 3.0.0 with plain templates (one migrated by ODT ADFA-433 | UI Mode switch in Preferences #45 without ADFA-341 | Adding help button in file tree actions #50) would fail every templated page, loudly and logged. That follows from the decision that the version is the only marker. The body's Release line, and ADFA-341 | Adding help button in file tree actions #50 being stacked on ADFA-433 | UI Mode switch in Preferences #45, cover it.

  • Mutants: 15 run by hand, 13 killed:

    • the threshold (>), decode always, decode never, no version as compressed;
    • the flag kept across a swap, or reset to false instead of null;
    • no pre-read in renderNamed, no dictionary in the codec;
    • catch (RuntimeException) around the decode, the failure message without the name, no log line, a log line without the name;
    • the loader ignoring decode.

    The 2 survivors: the charset (R2164-01), and dropping the flag's cache, which is equivalent because it only re-reads the version on each template compile.

  • Fail without the fix: with the loader ignoring decode, 13 tests fail (7 in :common, 6 in :app), as the body says.

  • Tests and checks: :common documentation 66 and :app localWebServer 62 all pass at the head, and spotlessCheck is clean. The test seam is needed: :common has brotli4j but no desktop native for tests (common/build.gradle.kts:54-57); :app adds one per host.

  • Not checked: the device check, :app:assembleV8Debug (as briefed), and the body's 7.47 MB / 7.55 MB saving. ADFA-387 Remove gradle's attempts to connect on the network #49's review measured -7.84 MB / -8.04 MB on the end-to-end input, a different base.

  • Related, not this PR: ADFA-387 Remove gradle's attempts to connect on the network #49's review (R49-03) found that Pebble's default template cache is unbounded and that DocumentationContentSource sets none. All of the a/ includes compiled together hold about 33 MB of heap. That is waiting on a decision about the app side.

640 of the 3.0.0 build's 1,126 templates hold non-ASCII text, most of
them U+00A0, but every template in the tests was ASCII: reading the
decoded bytes as ISO-8859-1 at DatabaseTemplateLoader.kt:105 left all
66 :common documentation tests and 62 :app localWebServer tests
passing, while a real page would show "A-circumflex" before each
no-break space.

Six tests now render text with U+00A0, U+2014 and U+2026, plain and
decoded: two in the loader's tests, two through DocumentationContentSource
with a stand-in decode, and two in :app through the real Brotli decode.
The page tests compare bytes. All six fail with ISO_8859_1 at line 105
(the one line both paths share), and the four page tests also fail with
the rendered output encoded as ISO_8859_1.

documentation-database.md said CompressionDictionary was "trained once
... never retrained", but OfflineDocumentationTools' remint_dictionary.py
(on its main since ADFA-5153) retrains it and recompresses every brotli
Content row, and from version 3 every template too (ODT #48). Now that
templates depend on the dictionary, the rule a reader needs is that a
re-mint is safe only when it carries every row and template across.

The content source's entry called the templated rows "the Kotlin doc
set's pages"; a 2.x database also templates the i/ pages, and the 3.0.0
build the a/ pages.

Response to the review

All three findings are addressed (2bb16a6..f2178d7).

ID Fixed in Change
R2164-01 119f5ed Six tests render non-ASCII templates (U+00A0, U+2014, U+2026), plain and decoded
R2164-02 f2178d7 The doc says the dictionary is re-minted, and names the templated doc sets
R2164-03 body Page and template counts corrected, each with the database it comes from
  • R2164-01: two tests in DatabaseTemplateLoaderTest (plain row, decoded row), two in DocumentationContentSourceTest (v2 plain, v3 through a stand-in decode), and two in :app's CompressedTemplateTest (v3 through the real Brotli decode, v2 plain). The four page tests compare the page's bytes, not a string read back from them.

    • Plain and decoded templates share the one line, DatabaseTemplateLoader.kt:105 (the plain path's decode is the identity). With UTF_8 there replaced by ISO_8859_1, exactly these 6 tests fail, and for that reason: for example, expected a b — c… but was a b â câ¦, or bytes 61C2A0... against 61C382C2A0.... The code is restored.
    • With the rendered output encoded as ISO-8859-1 instead (DocumentationContentSource.kt:547), the 4 page tests fail, and only they do.
    • Your charset survivor is now killed. The other survivor, dropping the version flag's cache, stays equivalent.
    • On the ship-time build, I rechecked your figures with the brotli CLI: all 1,126 templates decode against its dictionary, to 12,185,146 bytes of UTF-8. 640 hold non-ASCII text, 631 of them U+00A0.
  • R2164-02: line 85 now says the dictionary was first trained by migrate_content_to_dictionary_brotli.py / populate_db.py, and is retrained since by remint_dictionary.py (on OfflineDocumentationTools' main since ADFA-5153, ADFA-5153: Shared-dictionary Brotli compression for Content rows OfflineDocumentationTools#30), which recompresses every brotli row and, from version 3, every template (ADFA-3305: Re-mint and verify compressed templates in schema 3 OfflineDocumentationTools#48). So a re-mint is safe only when it carries every row and template across. Line 95 names the templated rows: k/ and i/ in a 2.x database, and a/ too in a 3.x one. I checked the other sentences this PR touches (the version paragraph and the Templates paragraph) and found nothing else stale.

  • R2164-03: the body now gives 3,863 templated pages for the 2026-10-18 database (2.0.0; 3,504 k/ and 359 i/), and 1,120 templates added by the a/ conversion (1,126 in all, 12.19 MB of text, in the 2026-10-19 ship-time build). It replaces the 7.47 MB / 7.55 MB saving, whose database could not be found, with the 7.84 MB / 8.04 MB measured on the ship-time build's input in ADFA-3305: Store the a/ reference pages as JSON plus shared templates OfflineDocumentationTools#49's review. The test counts are updated.

  • Tests: :common documentation 70 (66 + 4) and :app localWebServer 64 (62 + 2), all passing; spotlessCheck clean. The fixes change only tests and docs, so :app:assembleV8Debug was not rerun.

  • CodeRabbit: not available on this PR. @coderabbitai review (12:16 UTC) replied that it does not re-review already reviewed commits, and @coderabbitai full review (16:00 UTC) failed without a reason. It did review ADFA-3305: Read and write the keyed tooltip tables (documentation schema 3.0.0) #2163, the base of this stack.

@davidschachterADFA Thanks for the detailed response. I inspected head f2178d7b3 and the current PR description.

  • R2164-01: The six non-ASCII tests are present. The four page tests compare output bytes against UTF-8 bytes.
  • R2164-02: The documentation now describes dictionary re-minting and identifies the templated documentation sets.
  • R2164-03: The current PR description still contains the old figures: 3,490 pages, “about 1,000 templates,” and 7.47 MB / 7.55 MB savings. It also still reports 66 / 62 tests. Please retry saving the description update. This finding remains unresolved.

I did not run the tests or mutation checks. The passing results remain your reported results, not an independent verification.

The failed full-review response gives no cause. It does not establish that CodeRabbit is unavailable for this PR. I have not triggered another review.

Thanks for clarifying the dictionary re-minting requirement.

Learning: In appdevforall/CodeOnTheGo, documentation version 3 Templates.content contains UTF-8 text Brotli-compressed against the database's CompressionDictionary. OfflineDocumentationTools/remint_dictionary.py retrains the dictionary and must recompress every dictionary-compressed Content row and, from version 3, every template against the replacement dictionary. Replacing the dictionary alone leaves those rows and templates incompatible. This contract is documented in docs/documentation-database.md.

Four independent reviews of work already reported as verified each found a real defect in it. Before calling a change done, verified, or behaviour-neutral:

- **Every claim needs its check.** "No behaviour change", "this MIME type has rows in the shipped database", "that tool logs a warning" are all testable — run the query, read the sibling repo's source, diff the commits — or don't write them. Re-read the PR body before pushing: a description that was true at commit 1 is often false by commit 3.

Learning: In appdevforall/CodeOnTheGo Brotli dictionary decoding, the no-dictionary and wrong-dictionary cases have different contracts. For content that references the shared `CompressionDictionary`, decoding with no dictionary must fail with `IOException` because dictionary references are out of bounds. Decoding with a wrong attached dictionary can succeed and produce incorrect bytes. In `app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/localWebServer/BrotliDictionaryDecodeTest.kt`, retain the no-dictionary negative test with `assertThrows(IOException::class.java)`; do not use a broad `Exception` assertion.

- **Keep docs in sync with the code.** If a change alters a module's public API, commands, or behavior that's described in its `README.md` (or `ARCHITECTURE.md` / an ADR), update that doc in the *same* PR. A doc that documents a non-existent API is worse than no doc. If the doc-fix is genuinely out of scope, leave a tracked note (a ticket) rather than silently letting it drift.

## Verify before you claim

Four independent reviews of work already reported as verified each found a real defect in it. Before calling a change done, verified, or behaviour-neutral:

- **Prove the regression test fails without the fix.** Revert the fix, run the new test, confirm it fails *for the reason it is named for*, then restore. A test that passes against the unfixed code pins nothing. Watch for expectations that all coincide with one boundary value: if every case equals the minimum, a `MIN()` stub passes the whole suite.

Merge-order note for #2162 and #2164. Whichever of the two merges second needs a small fix, or it won't compile.

Found while building a local integration of #2163, #2164, #2161 and #2162 for the ADFA-3305 phone test. With these two changes it compiles, and its pages passed the phone check with the item-B database.
