ADFA-3305

Reads and writes documentation.db's keyed tooltip tables (documentation schema 3.0.0), which
appdevforall/OfflineDocumentationTools#45 creates. They make the file 5.2 MB smaller and turn a tooltip's buttons from a full-table scan into a key
lookup. Builds on #2160, so it targets fix/ADFA-6597.

Schema

  • Tooltips(id, categoryId, tag): WITHOUT ROWID, keyed on (categoryId, tag). The separate UNIQUE index goes.
  • TooltipTexts(id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT, summary, detail).
  • TooltipButtons(tooltipId, buttonNumberId, descriptionId, uriId): WITHOUT ROWID, keyed on
(tooltipId, buttonNumberId); each description and uri stored once in TooltipButtonDescriptions and
    TooltipButtonUris.

The text lives in its own rowid table because, inside the WITHOUT ROWID table, it cost 1.18 MB more: interior pages
hold whole rows, and rows over 1,002 bytes spill into mostly empty overflow pages. Details in the ODT PR.

Sizes and timings

Base: the 2026-10-18 database after ADFA-6627's first build (appdevforall/OfflineDocumentationTools#44 at a3c444e4), packed as the pipeline packs it; .br is brotli -q 11 -w 24.

Copy File .br
Base 110,895,104 86,918,141
Converted, then --pack Content,TooltipTexts 105,697,280 86,693,653

The 5,197,824-byte file saving is real. The 224,488-byte .br saving is at noise level: repacking alone moved the
.br by 0.17 MB. Desktop SQLite 3.46.1, warm, 2,000 keys, two runs on a busy machine: buttons 0.005-0.008 ms instead
of 2.5-3.7 ms (a scan and sort of all 54,799 rows); tooltip 0.009-0.014 ms instead of 0.011-0.016 ms.

Reading (idetooltips)

  • queryTooltip finds the category's id first, searches Tooltips by its key, then reads TooltipTexts by id. The
new queryTooltipButtons reads one key range of TooltipButtons, joined to the two lookup tables by id.
  • Tooltips has no rowid any more. It always equalled id, so IDETooltipItem.rowId (shown as "Row" in the debug
dialog and the feedback email) now carries the id. The data class keeps its shape, since it ships to plugins.

Writing (plugin-manager)

The tooltip SQL moves to PluginTooltipTables.kt (first commit, no behavior change), then:

  • A tooltip's text goes into TooltipTexts first, whose AUTOINCREMENT id keys its Tooltips row, so no id is
reused. That id is taken from the TooltipTexts insert: an insert into a WITHOUT ROWID table returns the
    previous insert's rowid.
  • Each button's description and uri are looked up, or added, 500 strings per query, sharing built-in text.
  • Removal deletes by category through subqueries (this also removes the old one-variable-per-tooltip IN list),
then deletes description and uri rows no button uses.
  • Every insert throws on failure. db.insert returned -1 instead, and the transaction committed anyway.

Version check

DatabaseVersionResolver.requireKeyedTooltips makes the reader and both writer entry points refuse a database
declaring a version below 3, with a message naming the version, before any query or write.

Release order

  • How the database reaches users: compress_docdb.yml runs daily at 11:00 UTC. It downloads documentation.db
from Google Drive (DOCUMENTATION_DB_FILE_ID) and, when its md5 has changed, uploads documentation.db.br to Drive.
release.yml runs daily at 12:00 UTC: it merges stage into main, downloads that documentation.db.br into
assets/release/common/database/, and builds the release APK from main, which bundles it. Only local debug
    builds take dev-assets.
  • App and database switch in the same build: this app refuses tooltips from a database declaring less than 3, so
with a 2.x file it shows no built-in tooltips. The current app reading a 3.0.0 file loses its tooltips too, and
from reading its code, a plugin install records the plugin as installed with no rows. So every daily build has to
pair this reader with a 3.0.0 file, or the current one with 2.x.
  • Ways to switch (not yet chosen):
    • Same day: after one day's 12:00 UTC release and before the next day's 11:00 UTC compression, put the 3.0.0 file
on Drive and merge this PR into stage; the next 12:00 UTC build takes both. Putting the file there between
11:00 and 12:00 UTC needs compress_docdb.yml run by hand. No off-cycle release may run in between.
    • Pause: disable release.yml's schedule until both are in place, then run compress_docdb.yml and release.yml
      by hand.
  • Existing installs: first-time setup is the only writer of the installed documentation.db, so an update keeps
it. An install set up with a 2.x file shows no tooltips after updating to this app, until its data is cleared.
Accepted for ADFA-3305 (review finding R2163-01).
  • Schema 3.0.0 will also mean every template is stored Brotli-compressed (ADFA-3305 decision, one switch). The
app side is a CodeOnTheGo PR stacked on this one, and the two merge together. The database side is
ADFA-3305: Migrate the tooltip tables to keyed tables (documentation schema 3.0.0) OfflineDocumentationTools#45, plus its stacked template-compression PR.

Conflicts

Tests

  • TooltipQueryTest: 11 tests against the version 3 DDL, including query plans (key searches, no scan, no sort), the
version check for 2, 4 and none, and readTooltip's row mapping (id, summary, detail, buttons in order, a missing
tag, two categories with one name).
  • PluginTooltipTablesTest (new, Robolectric, added to plugin-manager's test dependencies): 9 tests. They cover:
    plugin rows read back through the app's queries; ids not reused; a repeated tag; shared and cleaned-up text;
removal restoring the tables exactly; 1,200 tooltips; a version 2 database refused untouched; a failed insert into
any of the six tables throwing and rolling back.
  • Module totals: idetooltips 15, plugin-manager 142, common 205, all passing; spotlessCheck clean.
  • Mutants: 18 of 20 caught. Taking the id from the Tooltips insert passes because it is equivalent here
(last_insert_rowid() still holds the TooltipTexts id). Dropping the chunking passes because Robolectric's SQLite
    binds over 33,000 variables.
  • Not run: any :app task, or a device.

Still to check on a device

  • Done on 2026-10-18 (Pixel 6 Pro, with a 3.0.0 debug database): built-in tooltips in the ide and kotlin categories
(text, button order, links), and a 2.x debug database refused with the log line and no crash.
  • Still open: the xml and java categories and the debug dialog's Row; plugin install, uninstall and reinstall
(Layout-Editor, Python-Tools) and install time against 53.6 ms on desktop; an update over an existing install with
no debug override (expected: no tooltips, as accepted above). Query plans on SQLite 3.22.0 were checked on desktop
only (key searches, no temp B-tree).
  • No font-scale check is needed: no layout changes.

Written as a join of Tooltips and TooltipCategories, the tooltip query
made SQLite scan all of Tooltips - 46,128 rows, 13 MB - for every
tooltip shown, because documentation.db carries no ANALYZE statistics
(EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN: "SCAN T"). Looking the category's id up first lets
the UNIQUE (categoryId, tag) index find the row: 6.2 ms -> 0.004 ms per
lookup on a desktop against the real database, same rows.

IN rather than =, so two categories sharing a name still come back as
duplicates, which getTooltip reports as before.

The buttons query still scans TooltipButtons (5.4 MB); that needs an
index in the database, which this change cannot add.

…nds them

From review of PR #2160:
- TooltipQueryTest bound the query's arguments itself, so it would pass
whatever order getTooltip used, and this PR reversed that order. The
SQL and its binding now live in queryTooltip, in TooltipQuery.kt,
which getTooltip calls with named arguments and the test calls too.
Swapping the binding fails two of the three tests.
- QUERY_TOOLTIP is marked @VisibleForTesting: only the plan test reads
it. It is still a public static field in bytecode, as it was inside
TooltipManager, and so still in the plugin-api jar.
- Drops @ConscryptMode(OFF). The Conscrypt leak it guarded against
broke a TLS test in common; idetooltips has none.

A file of its own rather than top-level code in ToolTipManager.kt:
ktlint leaves ToolTipManager.kt unformatted while its only top-level
declaration, object TooltipManager, does not match the file name. A
second declaration there makes Spotless reformat all of the file's
~380 changed lines, burying this change.

No behavior change. The four helpers that write and delete a plugin's
tooltips move, unchanged, to PluginTooltipTables.kt behind two internal
functions, writePluginTooltips and removePluginTooltips, so tests can
run them against an in-memory database without a Context. The manager
now maps each PluginTooltipEntry to its final text and resolved button
URIs before handing them over, inside the same transaction as before.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_018CMZQuXT3GT7nEct2w4tg3
documentation.db version 3 (OfflineDocumentationTools'
migrate_tooltip_schema.py) stores the same tooltips in 5.2 MB less:

- Tooltips is a WITHOUT ROWID table keyed on (categoryId, tag) holding
only the id, so the separate UNIQUE (categoryId, tag) index, a second
copy of every tag, is gone. The text is in TooltipTexts, by id.
- TooltipButtons is keyed on (tooltipId, buttonNumberId), so a
tooltip's buttons are one key range in display order instead of a
scan and sort of the whole table. Each distinct description and uri
is stored once, in TooltipButtonDescriptions and TooltipButtonUris.

queryTooltip joins TooltipTexts by id, and the new queryTooltipButtons
joins the two lookup tables. Tooltips has no rowid any more; it always
equalled id, so IDETooltipItem.rowId, which the debug dialog and the
feedback email show, now carries the id.

Both readers refuse a database declaring a version below 3, through
DatabaseVersionResolver.requireKeyedTooltips, with a message naming
the version, rather than fail on whichever old column a query meets.

Tests run both queries against the version 3 DDL, including their
query plans (key searches, no scan, no sort), and the version check
for versions 2, 4 and none.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_018CMZQuXT3GT7nEct2w4tg3
PluginTooltipTables.kt now writes the version 3 tooltip tables:

- A tooltip's text goes into TooltipTexts first, whose AUTOINCREMENT id
then keys the Tooltips row. The id is the one that insert returns:
Tooltips is WITHOUT ROWID, and SQLite does not record its inserts as
a rowid, so an insert into it returns the previous insert's rowid,
  not anything of its own.
- Each button's description and uri are looked up in, or added to,
TooltipButtonDescriptions and TooltipButtonUris, 500 strings per
query, so text a built-in button already uses is shared.
- A plugin's rows are deleted by category through subqueries, which
also removes the old one-variable-per-tooltip IN list, and text no
button names any more is deleted after every write and removal.
- Every insert throws on failure. db.insert returned -1 instead, so a
failed insert left a tooltip without its buttons, or buttons on
tooltip -1, and the transaction committed anyway.
- Both entry points refuse a database declaring a version below 3
  before writing anything.

Tests run against the version 3 DDL with one built-in tooltip: what a
plugin writes reads back through the app's queries; new ids are never
reused; a repeated tag keeps the later entry; text is shared and
cleaned up; removing every plugin leaves the tables exactly as they
were; 1,200 tooltips write and remove; a version 2 database is refused
untouched; and a failed insert into any of the six tables throws and
rolls back. plugin-manager's tests now use Robolectric, already in the
version catalog, for SQLiteDatabase.

Independent Claude review (head 5cc8d2b)

The new code is correct for a 3.0.0 database; no bugs found in the queries or the writer. The critical finding is about existing installs, and is out of scope by decision (below).

ID Severity file:line Finding
R2163-01 critical TooltipQuery.kt:43 Updated installs keep their 2.x db, so the gate hides every tooltip
R2163-02 medium PR body, "Release order" Plan names dev-assets; releases bundle the Drive file, every day
R2163-03 low ToolTipManager.kt:118 The refusal log does not say which file was refused
R2163-04 low ToolTipManager.kt:96-108 getTooltip's new column indexes and rowId have no test
R2163-05 low docs/documentation-database.md:10 Docs say the db is extracted on update; v2 editing flow not marked

R2163-01 (out of scope). documentation.db is written only by first-time setup: InstallationViewModel.startIdeSetup returns early once the JDK and ANDROID_HOME exist (InstallationViewModel.kt:76), and PluginDocumentationManager.kt:444 notes the file "survives an app upgrade". On the test phone the installed file is still the 2026-10-15 2.0.0 copy after the 2026-10-18 update. So every existing user who updates keeps a 2.x file: queryTooltip throws, every long-press shows the fallback popup, and plugin tooltips do not install; only clearing app data recovers. The device check passed because a 3.0.0 debug override was in /sdcard/Download. Decided on ADFA-3305 (2026-10-18): existing installs keeping their old database is not a concern for this work, so this is recorded, not fixed.

R2163-02. The body says to release the app, then upload the 3.0.0 database, because dev-assets is not versioned. release.yml runs daily at 12:00 UTC, merges stage into main, and its download_documentation job bundles documentation.db.br from Google Drive (release.yml:261-297, 430-461); dev-assets feeds only local debug builds. Following the body, the next daily build pairs the new reader with a 2.x file and fresh installs get no tooltips. OfflineDocumentationTools #45's body has the corrected plan; this one contradicts it.

R2163-03. The message reads "documentation.db declares documentation version N" whether the refused file was the installed one or the /sdcard/Download override (chosen by mtime, ToolTipManager.kt:63-69), and dbPath is not logged.

R2163-04. No test runs TooltipManager.getTooltip, though its cursor columns were renumbered (1-3 to 0-2) and rowId became the id. With summary = c.getString(2) (the detail shown as the summary), all 12 idetooltips tests still pass.

R2163-05. documentation-database.md:10 says the db is "extracted on install/update" (first setup only); :103 and :106 say docdb-studio edits "this same documentation.db" and validates TooltipButtons.uri, which the shipped file no longer has (docdb-studio edits the 2.x master, which the migration converts); :11's debug-override workflow does not say a 2.x master pushed there now shows no tooltips. idetooltips/README.md:16 cites a Room IDETooltipDatabase that does not exist (older than this PR).

Checked and sound

  • Query plans under SQLite 3.22.0 (Ubuntu 18.04's library, same version as Android 9) on a 3.0.0 copy: tooltip and buttons queries are key searches with no temp B-tree; the writer's deletes search keys; only the unused-text cleanup and string lookups scan. The app's queries match ODT ADFA-433 | UI Mode switch in Preferences #45's copies.
  • Reader: a missing tag returns null; two categories with one name still raise DatabaseCorruptionException; the inner joins cannot drop rows from data the migration or writer produce; "Row" shows the same value as before (v2's id was the rowid).
  • Writer: ids come from TooltipTexts' AUTOINCREMENT and are never reused (660 inserts on 3.22); every write throws on error inside the caller's exclusive transaction; the cleanup keeps text built-in buttons share; 500 variables per IN stays under 999. A 30-tooltip install took 67-130 ms on desktop 3.22, about 40 ms of it the cleanup under the lock.
  • All three entry points check the version before any query or write; on a 2.x database reads return null and writes return false, no crash. The content dictionary gate (>= 2) still decodes 3.0.0 content.
  • Tests: idetooltips 12, plugin-manager 142, common 205 pass. Mutants caught: deleting Tooltips before TooltipTexts, db.insert for buttons, dropping the cleanup; survived: chunk size 100000 (as the body says), dropping the buttons ORDER BY (harmless), the column mutant above.
  • The branch merges cleanly into stage. Re-measured: buttons 4.2-7.8 ms to 0.006-0.007 ms; tooltip 0.058 to 0.011-0.012 ms.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

No behaviour change. The query, the row-count check and the mapping of
the row and its buttons to an IDETooltipItem move out of
TooltipManager.getTooltip into readTooltip beside queryTooltip, so tests
can run them without initializing TooltipManager, which reads the
installed app's Environment. Spotless reformatted the moved `when`.

📝 Summary
  • Add version 3 support for keyed tooltip tables. Tooltip reads join tooltip text by ID and retrieve button descriptions and URIs in display order.
  • Add plugin tooltip writes and removals for version 3 databases. The writer reuses shared button text and removes unused button descriptions and URIs.
  • Reject tooltip reads and plugin tooltip writes or removals when the database declares a version below 3 or has no declared version.
  • Compatibility risk: An app update retains the installed documentation database. Existing installations with a version 2 database will show no tooltips until app data is cleared. The release requires a version 3 database.
  • Testing limitation: No test-run results were supplied with the implementation details. Device checks and remaining validation are not established here.

The change adds version 3 checks and keyed-table queries for tooltip reads. Plugin tooltip writes and removals now use dedicated persistence functions. Tests and documentation cover the schema, read behavior, plugin updates, and database-version handling.

Changes: Keyed Tooltip Storage and Access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Versioned tooltip reads
common/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/utils/DatabaseVersionResolver.kt, idetooltips/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/idetooltips/*, idetooltips/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/idetooltips/*, docs/documentation-database.md, idetooltips/README.md
Tooltip reads now require a declared database version of at least 3. Queries retrieve text and ordered buttons from the keyed schema, and the manager delegates reads to this path. Tests and documentation describe the version requirement and query behavior.
Plugin tooltip persistence
plugin-manager/src/main/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/documentation/*, plugin-manager/src/test/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/documentation/PluginTooltipTablesTest.kt
The plugin documentation manager delegates tooltip writes and removals to dedicated persistence functions. These functions replace category data, manage shared text rows, and remove unreferenced button text. Tests cover replacement, removal, version rejection, insert failures, and large batches.

-- Tooltip uniqueness is `(categoryId, tag)`; `TooltipButtons.uri` values are validated there against `Content.path` (post `?query`/`#fragment` stripping) before being allowed into the database.

Add a manager-path tooltip mapping test.

TooltipQueryTest validates the helper outputs, but no test calls TooltipManager.getTooltip. A swapped summary/detail index or an incorrect tooltip ID passed to queryTooltipButtons would therefore escape these tests and produce incorrect tooltip content or buttons. Add a focused manager-path assertion with distinct summary, detail, ID, and button values.

getTooltip reads the installed documentation.db or, when it is newer,
the /sdcard/Download debug override, and the log said neither: a
"declares documentation version 2" line left a developer guessing
which file to replace. The log now names the source and its path.

No test ran getTooltip's row mapping, though this branch renumbered its
columns and made rowId the id: with the summary read from the detail
column, all 12 idetooltips tests still passed. A tooltip whose id,
summary, detail and buttons all differ is now read back into the exact
item, so that mutant, a swapped detail and a wrong rowId each fail it.
Also covers the missing-tag and duplicate-category exceptions.

docs/documentation-database.md said the database is extracted on install
and update; InstallationViewModel extracts it at first-time setup only,
so an update keeps the installed file, and a version 2 one then shows no
tooltips (accepted for ADFA-3305). It also said docdb-studio edits "this
same documentation.db" and validates TooltipButtons.uri: the master it
edits stays in version 2, and migrate_tooltip_schema.py converts a copy
for shipping, so docdb-studio and the docs/docdb scripts use the version
2 columns. The debug-override notes now say a version 2 file shows no
tooltips, and the ToolTipManager entry names readTooltip.
idetooltips/README.md cited a Room IDETooltipDatabase that does not
exist; the module reads documentation.db with raw SQLite.

Response to the review

R2163-02 to -05 are fixed (5cc8d2b..ae7b08f). R2163-01 is out of scope by decision; the docs and body now say so.

ID Fixed in Change
R2163-01 not fixed (decided) Docs and body state that an update keeps the installed file; accepted for ADFA-3305
R2163-02 PR body Release section rewritten from compress_docdb.yml and release.yml, matching OfflineDocumentationTools #45
R2163-03 f9bd830 The error log names the installed or debug database and its path
R2163-04 e22ade6, 49257e0 Row mapping moved into readTooltip() (no behaviour change), and 3 tests for it
R2163-05 ae7b08f documentation-database.md and idetooltips/README.md corrected
  • R2163-04: your mutant (summary = c.getString(2)) now fails the new test. So do detail read from column 1 and rowId 0. TooltipQueryTest has 11 tests and idetooltips 15, all passing; spotlessCheck is clean.
  • R2163-03 has no test: the message is built inside TooltipManager, whose initializer reads the installed app's Environment.
  • R2163-05: the docs now say the database is extracted at first setup only. They also say the master stays 2.x: docdb-studio, the ODT tools and the docs/docdb/*.sql scripts write the 2.x columns, and migrate_tooltip_schema.py converts a copy for shipping. The uri check names both shapes. A 2.x debug override shows no tooltips, and the log names it. The README's nonexistent Room IDETooltipDatabase is now described as raw SQLite through TooltipQuery.kt.
  • PR body: also says that schema 3.0.0 will mean compressed templates, in a stacked PR that merges with this one, and lists the device checks done and still open.

@coderabbitai Both findings from your review of 5cc8d2b are addressed in ae7b08f's range:

  • docs/documentation-database.md:106 (minor): the line now names both shapes, TooltipButtons.uri in the version 2 master and TooltipButtonUris.uri once converted. The docdb-studio master stays at version 2, so naming only the version 3 table would be wrong for it (ae7b08f).
  • ToolTipManager.kt:96-108 (nitpick): getTooltip's row mapping moved into readTooltip() (e22ade6, no behaviour change), and TooltipQueryTest now reads a full tooltip back through it (49257e0). A swapped summary/detail index, a wrong detail column and a zero rowId all fail it.

@davidschachterADFA Verified both changes at ae7b08f5.

  • docs/documentation-database.md now distinguishes TooltipButtons.uri in the version 2 master from TooltipButtonUris.uri in the converted version 3 database.
  • TooltipManager.getTooltip now delegates to readTooltip(). The new test checks distinct summary and detail values, rowId = 4242, and the complete tooltip item.

Both findings are addressed. I inspected the code and test assertions; I did not rerun the tests. Thanks for clarifying the master database workflow.

Learning: In appdevforall/CodeOnTheGo, docs/documentation-database.md describes two tooltip schemas. OfflineDocumentationTools/docdb-studio edits the version 2 master database, where button URIs are in TooltipButtons.uri. migrate_tooltip_schema.py converts a copy for shipping as version 3, where button URIs are in TooltipButtonUris.uri. Documentation about the editing workflow must preserve this distinction rather than refer only to the version 3 table.

Merge pair: #2164 (reading compressed templates, stacked on this PR) merges with this one; both ship in the same switch as the 3.0.0 database from appdevforall/OfflineDocumentationTools#45 and #50.
