ADFA-6589: Keep the app's WebViews from connecting off the device - #2161
davidschachterADFA wants to merge 7 commits into
Conversation
Documentation pages reference YouTube players, remote images and, in newer databases, Google Fonts. A WebView fetches whatever its client does not answer, and HelpActivity, the tooltip fragment and FAQActivity handed every request their documentation interceptor declined to the network. The tooltip popup had no interceptor at all. Tapped links to other sites opened in place, with no warning. OffDeviceRequests now sits between the interceptor and the network in all four: an http(s) request to any host but the device itself gets an empty 204, so requests to localhost still reach WebServer. A tapped off-device link, and an off-device URL passed to HelpActivity, goes through UrlManager.openUrl's consent dialog to the browser. The host check fails closed: an http(s) URL it cannot parse counts as off-device, and userinfo or a look-alike host does not pass as localhost. Not WebSettings.blockNetworkLoads: it would also block WebServer's /pr/ endpoints and the CodeOnTheGo.nointercept fallback. Safe Browsing has Google Play services send the addresses a WebView loads to Google to be checked, and charges that traffic to the app: on the device, the previous build's documentation pages caused 37,876 bytes of such lookups (socket tag 0x4001804) while their own requests failed. These WebViews load only documentation from the device, so there is nothing to check. With Safe Browsing off, a request that ever got past OffDeviceRequests.block would not also be looked up. Help, the tooltip fragment, FAQ and the tooltip popup now call OffDeviceRequests.disableSafeBrowsing before loading anything. 8eff34c said that with Safe Browsing off, a request that got past OffDeviceRequests.block would not also be looked up. Measured since on a Pixel 6 Pro, it looks addresses up even when block answers the request: with the block alone, two documentation pages cost 15,234 bytes of Safe Browsing lookups (tag 0x4001804) and Play services bound its SafeBrowsingService; with Safe Browsing off, six pages cost nothing and no binding happened. The first test after the block showed 0 bytes only because Safe Browsing had cached its answers for those pages. The KDoc and docs/documentation-database.md now say so. No code change. …vity From CodeRabbit's review of PR #2161: the consent dialog needs an Activity, and a tooltip popup's own context may not be one, since canShowPopup allows that. An off-device link in such a popup closed it and did nothing. The popup now tries its context, then the context of the view it is anchored to (OffDeviceRequests.activityFor). With neither, it stays open and shows "This link can't be opened from here." rather than dropping the tap. canShowPopup is back to its form on stage. From the independent review of PR #2161: - R2161-01: the block was described as complete. It sees only what reaches shouldInterceptRequest; preconnect and dns-prefetch (tags or Link headers), WebSockets and redirect hops reach the network without it. The KDoc and docs now say so, and that no documentation page uses them. Service-worker fetches skip a WebView's client too, so keepOnDevice (formerly disableSafeBrowsing) also gives the process-wide ServiceWorkerClient the same block. - R2161-03: tests for an IPv6 host off the device and an upper-case scheme that does not parse. - R2161-04: java.net.URI rejects some characters a canonical URL keeps (a | in a query, a stray %), which made such local URLs count as off-device. Those now fall back to reading scheme://authority. - R2161-05: the popup's sponsor button passed a context UrlManager may not ask with; it now uses the same Activity fallback as the links. - R2161-06: the private findActivity copy is gone; ContextUtils' is used. - R2161-07, 08, 09: the docs list keeps to database readers; Safe Browsing looks addresses up as hash prefixes; a stale comment in HelpActivity. Independent review
An independent Claude Code review covered this PR at 53a40ee. It has no critical or high findings, one medium and eight low or nit. All but R2161-02 are addressed in b93ae84.
| ID | Sev | Finding | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| R2161-01 | medium | The block was described as complete, but preconnect, dns-prefetch, WebSockets, service workers and redirect hops skip shouldInterceptRequest |
Claim corrected in the KDoc, docs and this description; service-worker fetches now get the block too |
| R2161-02 | low | The tooltip popup's link handling, the one live changed path, was never run on a device | Open: needs the 2026-10-13 database on a phone (see below) |
| R2161-03 | low | Mutations survived: any IPv6 literal counted as local; an upper-case scheme failed open on the parse-failure path | Fixed: both are tested, and the mutations now fail |
| R2161-04 | low | java.net.URI rejects some characters a canonical URL keeps, so such local URLs counted as off-device |
Fixed: those fall back to reading scheme://authority |
| R2161-05 | low | The popup's sponsor button passed a context UrlManager may not ask consent with |
Fixed: it uses the same Activity fallback as links |
| R2161-06 | nit | A private copy of ContextUtils.findActivity |
Fixed: the copy is gone |
| R2161-07 | nit | The docs' "five sites" list gained a sixth entry that reads no database | Fixed: it's described in its own paragraph |
| R2161-08 | nit | "Sends the addresses to Google": the lookups carry hash prefixes | Fixed: reworded |
| R2161-09 | nit | A stale comment in HelpActivity |
Fixed |
R2161-01:
- What reaches
shouldInterceptRequest, and what doesn't:<link rel=dns-prefetch>andpreconnect, whether tags orLink:headers, open connections directly.- WebSockets aren't intercepted.
- A redirect hop goes straight to the network.
- Service-worker fetches go to
ServiceWorkerClient.
- Who can reach them: no first-party content uses any of them. Every text row of both databases was decoded and scanned, and the local server never redirects or sends
Link:. Plugin pages installed byPluginDocumentationManagercould; that's left as a possible follow-up. - What changed:
keepOnDevice(formerlydisableSafeBrowsing) now also gives the process-wideServiceWorkerClientthe sameblock.
R2161-02: in the 2026-10-13 database the only tooltip with an off-device link is category xml, tag defaultLocale (a link to rfc-editor.org). The phone runs a build bundling an older database without it. Testing it means putting the newer database where Help reads debug copies, /sdcard/Download/documentation.db. Until then it belongs in Steps to QA:
long-press
android:defaultLocale, tap the link, and check that the consent dialog appears over the editor and that Cancel leaves the editor alone.
Reachability notes from the review:
openFAQActivityhas no callers.IDETooltipWebviewFragmentis declared only inactivity_main.xml, with no URL.
So the tooltip popup is the only live path besides Help.
Mutations at b93ae84: four more were run against the new tests, and each failed its own test:
- the fallback treating every unparseable URL as off-device;
- no service-worker client;
- a case-sensitive fallback scheme;
- any IPv6 literal counted as local.
:common (216) and :idetooltips (4) tests pass, :app compiles, and Spotless changes nothing.
Checked and found correct
- Coverage: requests the interceptor declines get a local 204 in all four WebViews, and tapped off-device links warn and can be cancelled. Rejecting
blockNetworkLoadsis justified. - Host check: userinfo, look-alike hosts, case,
[::1]and parse failures behave as named. - Order and timing: interceptor, then block, then super, everywhere. Safe Browsing is off before the first load in all four.
- Navigations: iframe navigations are blocked by the 204.
window.openand_blankbecome top-level navigations and get the dialog. Navigations without a user gesture in both databases all target local pages. - Safe Browsing: the setting is per WebView and read on each check. Its checks run even when
shouldInterceptRequestanswers, which matches the phone measurement. - Siblings: the markdown preview plugin (ADFA-6607) and Termux help (ADFA-6608) are filed separately.

R2161-02: tested on the phone (Pixel 6 Pro, Android 17, build with 8eff34c). No project file contains
The later commits (53a40ee, b93ae84) change this path only when the popup has no Activity; with the editor's Activity, as here, the behaviour is the same. |
From the second independent review of PR #2161: - R2161B-01: the fallback read http://evil.com\@localhost/ as local. Chromium ends an http(s) authority at a backslash too, and drops leading and trailing spaces and control characters before parsing; the fallback now does both. - R2161B-02: tests for an IPv6 host and an @ in the query on the fallback path. - R2161B-03: the tooltip's sponsor button is hidden where no Activity can show the consent dialog, rather than shown and refused. - R2161B-04: the KDoc and docs say the ServiceWorkerClient is process-wide and stays set, plugins' WebViews included. - R2161B-05: the client is built with the object; the "Lazy" comment and the test's constructor mocks were not needed. - R2161B-06: the test's fragment case is one Chromium would hand over. - R2161B-07: the fallback returns the host, as its comment says, so the log names the host rather than the whole URL. - R2161B-08: Safe Browsing "sends Google hash prefixes of the addresses", reworded from a phrase that misread. - R2161B-10: WebRTC added to what the block cannot see. No documentation page uses it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_018CMZQuXT3GT7nEct2w4tg3
Second independent reviewA second independent Claude Code review covered this PR at b93ae84. It confirmed that b93ae84 closes R2161-01 and R2161-03 to 09. It has no critical, high or medium findings: four low and six nits, all fixed in 5d2df3a.
R2161B-01:
R2161B-02: both URLs the review suggested, R2161B-10: no documentation page uses WebRTC. Every text row of the 2026-10-13 database has 0 How it was checked at 5d2df3a:

Independent review of the fix commitsAn independent Claude Code review covered 5d2df3a, which answers the second independent review (R2161B-01 to R2161B-10). It has 1 low and 1 nit. All ten R2161B findings are addressed. Every mutation check named for this commit fails its test, and the counts match. R2161-10 is a gap of the same kind as R2161B-01: like that one, it is reachable only through

…host From the independent review of 5d2df3a: - R2161-10: the URL Standard has Chromium drop every tab, CR and LF inside a URL, so "http\n://evil.com/x" loads evil.com. Only the ends were trimmed, so the scheme no longer matched and isOffDevice read the URL as local. Only HelpActivity's intent extra hands over a raw URL, and block still answered the real request with a 204. Now those characters are dropped everywhere before parsing; a canonical URL never holds them. - R2161-11: the KDoc and docs/documentation-database.md say a plugin's own service-worker client lasts only until the next documentation WebView or tooltip popup sets CoGo's again. Removing the new filter fails "spaces around a URL do not hide its host". :common has 217 tests passing. The app's documentation WebViews no longer connect off the device. A request they can't serve locally gets an empty local response, and a tapped link to another site asks before opening in the browser.
Cause
Documentation pages reference YouTube players, images on developer.android.com and kotl.in, and, in newer databases, Google Fonts. A WebView fetches whatever its
WebViewClientdoesn't answer:HelpActivity,IDETooltipWebViewFragmentandFAQActivitypassed every request the documentation interceptor declined tosuper.shouldInterceptRequest, which goes to the network.ToolTipManager) renders tooltip HTML with no interceptor at all.HelpActivitychecked links, and only formailto:,tel:andsms:.Change
New
common/.../documentation/OffDeviceRequests.kt, used by all four WebViews:block(request)sits between the interceptor and the network. An http(s) request to any host other than the device itself (localhost,127.x.x.x,::1) gets an empty204. Requests tolocalhoststill reachWebServeras before.openWithConsent(activity, url)sends an off-device link throughUrlManager.openUrl's existing consent dialog (Cancel, Proceed, Don't ask again), which opens it in the browser. It takes anActivitybecauseUrlManager.openUrlasks only when given one; with any other context it opens the link without asking. That matters forIDETooltipWebViewFragment, whose view is inflated from the application context.keepOnDevice(settings)closes two ways a WebView reaches the network thatblockdoesn't see. It turns Safe Browsing off: Safe Browsing has Google Play services send Google hash prefixes of the addresses a WebView loads, charged to the app, even whenblockanswers the request locally, so the block alone still sent them (see Testing). And it gives service-worker fetches, which go to theServiceWorkerClientrather than a WebView's client, the same block. That client is process-wide and stays set: from the first documentation WebView on, it covers every WebView in the app, plugins' included; a plugin that sets its own replaces it only until the next documentation WebView or tooltip popup sets CoGo's again. Commits 8eff34c, 50d765e, b93ae84, 5d2df3a and 7f924e3.http://localhost@example.comnorhttp://localhost.example.compasses as local. Wherejava.net.URIrejects a URL Chromium accepts (a|in a query), it readsscheme://authorityas Chromium does: leading and trailing spaces and control characters dropped, and tabs and line breaks anywhere, the authority ending at/,\,?or#, and the host after the last@(b93ae84, 5d2df3a, 7f924e3).Wired into the four WebViews below. Each also calls
keepOnDevicebefore loading anything:HelpActivity: requests, tapped links, and an off-device URL passed in its intent. A link in a tooltip's text can name any site and reaches Help throughlaunch().IDETooltipWebViewFragmentandFAQActivity: requests and tapped links.UrlManagerasks for consent only when given one (b93ae84, 5d2df3a).Why not
WebSettings.blockNetworkLoads, which the ticket suggested as a backstop: it would also block requests toWebServeronlocalhost:6174, which the/pr/endpoints and theCodeOnTheGo.nointerceptfallback use. What the block can't see:<link rel=preconnect>anddns-prefetch(or the same in aLink:response header), WebSockets, WebRTC, and each hop of a redirect all reach the network withoutshouldInterceptRequest. No documentation page uses any of them: every text row of the 2026-10-13 and APK-bundled databases was decoded and scanned, and tooltip texts load nothing remote. NeitherWebServernor the interceptor sends a redirect or aLink:header. Plugin pages installed byPluginDocumentationManagercould use them; that's a possible follow-up.docs/documentation-database.mdis updated: it said the WebView "will happily follow" an off-device link. Not in this PR:
