Closes #3228.

Problem

  • You cannot import @blocknote/math-block in Node. Because of this, you cannot use it with ServerBlockNoteEditor from @blocknote/server-util, for example to export a document with equations to Markdown on a server. Node stops with ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION for katex.min.css.

Cause

latexToHTMLString.ts imports katex/dist/katex.min.css in JavaScript. The library build keeps this import in dist/blocknote-math-block.js, because katex is an external dependency. Node cannot load a .css file. The library build moves a CSS import of a file in the same package into dist/style.css, but it keeps a CSS import from an external package. No other package imports CSS from an external package, so only this package has the problem.

Changes

  • The JavaScript does not import CSS now.
  • A new stylesheet, src/style.css, imports the KaTeX stylesheet. The package exports it as @blocknote/math-block/style.css, as @blocknote/mantine/style.css does.
  • The math docs, the 5 examples with math, and the 2 browser tests that show math in the editor import the new stylesheet.

Breaking change for apps

Apps must add one import:

import "@blocknote/math-block/style.css";

Without it, each formula shows two times (the HTML output and the MathML output of KaTeX). Add this to the release notes.

How to test

  1. In Node, run the script from @blocknote/math-block cannot be imported in Node because its entry imports KaTeX's CSS #3228 (export a math block to Markdown with ServerBlockNoteEditor) with NODE_ENV=production. The script prints $$ a^2 $$ and does not stop with an error. (Without NODE_ENV=production, the process stops after the export because of ServerBlockNoteEditor crashes the process after exporting React custom blocks with React's development build #3230. fix(server-util): wait for React before the editor removes its DOM globals #3237 fixes that.)
  2. Open the math block example. Each formula shows one time, with the KaTeX fonts.
  3. Remove the new import from the example. Each formula shows two times. (This is the result for apps that do not add the import.)

Automated:

  • attributionTooltip and block-comparison pass in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.
  • dist/blocknote-math-block.js does not contain a CSS import.

Notes

  • No test in this PR fails without the change: the unit tests run through Vite, which handles CSS imports. The test PR for built packages adds a check in plain Node that finds this problem.
  • Other option, not used: a node export condition with an entry without the CSS import, and the CSS import in the browser entry. This is not a breaking change for most apps, but it adds a second entry.
  • Other option, not used: render MathML only and remove the KaTeX stylesheet. A comparison in three browsers showed that KaTeX MathML is not good in Chromium (no stretchy brackets, accents in the wrong position, ℝ shows as R). Temml MathML looks correct, but it is a larger change.
  • Optional follow-up: a development warning when the stylesheet is missing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The math-block package now provides a dedicated stylesheet export, making KaTeX styling available to applications using math blocks.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup instructions and examples to load the math-block stylesheet, including examples for PDF, DOCX, ODT, and email conversions.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Math-block styling is now included in the relevant examples and end-to-end tests, supporting consistent math rendering.

📝 Walkthrough

The math-block package now exports its KaTeX stylesheet separately from its JavaScript entry point. Documentation, examples, and end-to-end tests import the stylesheet.

Changes: Math block stylesheet

Layer / File(s) Summary
Separate stylesheet export
packages/math-block/src/style.css, packages/math-block/package.json, packages/math-block/src/helpers/latexToHTMLString.ts
The package exports ./style.css, which imports KaTeX’s minified CSS. The LaTeX helper no longer imports that CSS as a side effect.
Stylesheet imports
docs/content/docs/features/blocks/math.mdx, examples/05-interoperability/0.../src/App.tsx, examples/06-custom-schema/09-math-block/src/App.tsx, tests/src/end-to-end/versioning/*
The math block documentation, five examples, and two tests import the math-block stylesheet.

Explanation

Issue #3228 requires Node-compatible loading of @blocknote/math-block and a separate stylesheet option. The focused diff removes the JavaScript import of katex/dist/katex.min.css and adds src/style.css with the KaTeX import. The PR summary reports the @blocknote/math-block/style.css export and Node server-side Markdown export behavior. The summary also identifies stylesheet imports in the math documentation, examples, and browser tests. These changes address the issue requirements for math blocks and inline math without changing rendering logic.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #3228. The source change separates the CSS side effect from the Node entry point. The package export exposes the replacement stylesheet. Documentation, examples, and browser tests import the stylesheet so formulas render correctly. No unrelated behavior or feature changes are identified.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 7 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is detailed and relevant. It explains the problem, cause, changes, breaking change, testing, and additional implementation notes. It does not use the template headings exactly and omits the checklist and screenshots/video sections, but the required technical context is mostly complete.

Load the math stylesheet in the shared Vitest setup.

The block and inline jsdom tests render htmlAndMathml output without the documented stylesheet. Their assertions only check .katex presence and identity, so they can pass without detecting duplicate HTML/MathML rendering. Import @blocknote/math-block/style.css in packages/math-block/vitestSetup.ts so both suites use the documented rendering setup.
