Direction change. Stacked on #58 (→ #57 → #55 → #54 → #53). This PR started as a design proposal for upstream continuation. It now also changes what krm-stream says it is and where it is going.

The new direction

  • Watch first, editing optional. krm-stream gives browser apps efficient live Kubernetes views. The editor (drafts, conflicts, conditional save) is a layer you add only when a page needs it. README, guides and glossary now lead with the watch.
  • Native Kubernetes watch is the preferred transport. A browser should be able to consume native watch JSON through a host's session-authenticated proxy with fetch, reusing the same connection lifecycle and resource store, with no SSE wrapper in between. The gateway stays for what only it provides: projection/redaction, update suppression and shared upstream watches.
  • Pre-1.0, no known external users. We will move fast and break APIs where that makes the design simpler. Later commits remove the compatibility-path and "don't advertise yet" hedging.

What's in it

  1. b5cc779: the upstream continuation design for the gateway's Kubernetes backend, added to proposal 0006 (unchanged from the original PR).
  2. 1cdf1c4: re-centres the docs on watch-first, as described above.
    • Adds docs/field-reports/third-our-identity.md, the request: native watch connector, recovery acceptance, native/full/spec comparison and save progress under suppressed churn.
    • Slims completed proposals 0005–0010 down to their decisions and evidence.
    • Deletes the superseded first and second field reports and the duplicate docs/vue.md; the Vue guidance now lives in examples/vue.

Docs only, no behaviour change. Local link and anchor check passes.

Next

The first native connector slice is read-only. It re-lists on every reconnect, which is the same contract gateway SSE has today. Resume, streaming lists and native editing come later.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated product, adoption, security, operations, and integration guidance to clarify gateway-projected streams, native-source limitations, authorization, redaction, recovery, and optional editing and saving.
    • Reorganized proposals to distinguish implemented behavior from planned work, including a read-only native viewer and separate evaluations of watch recovery and save progress.
    • Revised examples and specifications to reflect current gateway SSE behavior and supported workflows.
    • Removed superseded field reports and the standalone Vue guide.

Priority 4 of proposal 0006 asks for the exhaustion transition, and the
choice between client-go's utilities and a small loop, to be settled
before implementation. This adds that design, and nothing else.

- Continuation lives in gateway/kube's watcher, beneath the gateway and
SharedBackend, so one reopen serves every subscriber and the wire is
  unchanged.
- client-go's RetryWatcher is not used: it cannot own the streaming
list's initial snapshot, retries most failures without a bound, and
makes 401/403 terminal where a fresh cycle can refresh credentials.
- The checkpoint is the last upstream event or bookmark resourceVersion,
taken before projection. Continuation is armed only after the
  snapshot boundary.
- 410 resyncs, 401/403 start a fresh cycle, and transient failures get
at most three backoff reopens. A watch that dies before an event
counts as a failure. Then ErrWatchClosed hands over to the gateway's
existing quick-end rule and the client's bounded budget.
- The authorization and credential-lifetime consequences are stated,
with one open question (capping continuation age), and an evidence
  and measurement plan is given.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request revises documentation for current gateway, client, projection, and save behavior. It separates supported SSE behavior from proposed native-watch and save-progress work. It also updates examples, contributor guidance, and proposal records without changing wire behavior or conformance requirements.

Changes

Current behavior and stream contract

Layer / File(s) Summary
Current stream and view contract
README.md, gateway/README.md, spec/v1.md, SECURITY.md, conformance/README.md, docs/why-a-gateway.md, docs/auth.md, docs/alternatives.md, docs/glossary.md, docs/migrating.md
The guides describe gateway scopes, projections, redaction, suppression, authorization boundaries, snapshot recovery, and the current SSE path. They distinguish native resources from projected gateway views.

Viewer, editor, and save guidance

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c6c22

The live gateway behavior is unchanged, but the continuation proposal should be corrected before implementation to avoid inaccurate retry assumptions and an unbounded reconnect loop.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c6c22

No implemented authorization bypass or new credential authority was identified. The proposed continuation has a retry-exhaustion loophole, while deployment-specific URL, session and authorization enforcement remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The newly specified continuation resets its failure counter whenever a reopened watch delivers any event. An upstream repeatedly delivering a bookmark and immediately closing can therefore avoid the three-failure exhaustion transition. Because continuation hides these closes from the gateway, its existing early-cycle fallback is not reached. This weakens the proposed containment of unhealthy upstreams, potentially keeping shared subscribers reporting live while repeatedly reopening. The concern is proposal-only; cancellation and timed authorization checks remain specified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A shared backend reads under one service identity, so subscriber disclosure depends on host authorization before cached objects are served. Sharing does not confer that identity's access on a subscriber. Per-user and shared deployments therefore have different underlying authority, even though both enforce scope and projection decisions before backend access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing SSE fetch path maps HTTP 401 and 403 to terminal authentication and authorization errors. Its connection owner exits instead of retrying terminal refusal. The fetch transport accepts caller-supplied URL, headers and credentials; the documented host boundary is responsible for trusted HTTPS endpoints and redirect policy.
  • observed — When configured, timed reauthorization serializes subscriber delivery with scope and projection checks. Denial or projection change cancels that stream; an unreachable authority also ends delivery but permits later reconnect. These checks are optional, do not refresh Clients, and depend on bounded host callbacks and sink I/O.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before implementing continuation, make the exhaustion policy account for rapid bookmark-then-close watches, for example by requiring a useful watch duration before resetting the failure budget. Preserve cancellable opening deadlines, timed authorization and last-subscriber cleanup while testing that sequence.

🟡 Minor · Scope the RetryWatcher comparison by failure… · 0006-stream-and-save-implementation-plan.md:127-130

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Scope the RetryWatcher comparison by failure phase.

RetryWatcher treats open failures and in-stream error events differently: it retries an opening 410 and an in-stream 401/403, but stops on an in-stream 410 and on opening 401/403. The current wording describes these statuses as if each has one retry outcome. State the behaviors by phase before using them to justify the custom loop. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep bookmark-only reconnects inside the failure budget.

A bookmark resets the counter under this rule. If each reopened watch emits a bookmark and then closes immediately, the counter resets on every reopen, so the watcher can reopen indefinitely without backoff or returning ErrWatchClosed to the gateway. Reset the count only after a watch remains useful for a minimum interval, or separately bound rapid closes.

Describe the native host-proxy source and the gateway's projected views as a
choice of guarantees rather than a framing preference, note that the SSE
connector's HTTP 4xx rule does not apply to native 410 history expiry, and
narrow the next native work to a read-only LIST/WATCH viewer that re-lists on
reconnect and reuses the existing lifecycle and read-only store.
