Description

Attribution had one input that depended on labels. A DELETED frame from a label-selected stream was a filtered removal, and it resolved only on the fact at the object's exact (uid, resourceVersion). A real deletion never fills that slot: an immediate delete is answered with a Status naming only the uid. So every deletion on a selected stream:

  • waited out the whole --author-attribution-grace (3s by default, 10s in e2e),
  • then shipped unresolved,
  • and blocked every later event on its stream while it waited.

A Flux prune of N selected objects stalled the stream for N × grace. That is the Flux E12 NoWindow flake (run 39570751820): E11's cleanup prune of owned-elsewhere held the stream for about 9s, and the save's edit reached the worker after the request's 8s attachTimeout had expired.

Attribution no longer reads the selector. The API server decides what is in view; attribution only combines the facts that come in. A removal is credited only to the request that caused it, decided from the facts and the object:

Object Asked first Then
not terminating a patch/update/delete at its own (uid, rv), i.e. a label exit deletion evidence: sticky pointer, collection uid, own delete by uid or name, collection scope
terminating the sticky removal pointer a delete at its own version only (a finalizer patch there is not the cause), then the rest

On a stream with no selector, the exact slot is always empty for a removal, so the first row never fires there. Behaviour on unselected streams changes only where the second point below applies.

Two further changes:

  • No last-writer fallback for removals. A removal used to hold the object's last write and return it when the grace expired, which named the last editor as the deleter. Now a removal without evidence is unresolved. Latency is unchanged; it removes the one place the pipeline knowingly guessed.
  • A whole batch is filed before any waiter wakes (FactIndex.Apply). A relabel and a delete that arrive in one audit batch are therefore always read together.

The accepted wrong author

Bob relabels an object out of a selection, and Carol deletes it within about one audit batch. If Carol's fact reaches the index first (two API servers batching independently) or Bob's fact is lost, the removal names Carol. She did delete the object, but Bob's relabel is what took it out of view. Refusing this case is what made every real deletion on a selected stream pay the full grace. The case is pinned by name in TestFactIndex_RemovalNamesTheDeleterWhenTheExitFactArrivesLater and in the corpus test.

Documented choices and the alert

  • docs/spec/attribution.md gains "What attribution gives up, on purpose", a table of every place attribution trades an author for speed, including the case above.

  • docs/interpreting-metrics.md gains a suggested alert:

    sum by (group, resource) (rate(gitopsreverser_attribution_resolutions_total{tier="absent"}[10m])) > 0

with for: 15m. An event that waits out the grace always resolves absent, so this fires on every event that held its stream for the full grace, which is the stall behind E12.

  • The CommitRequest sizing guide now says an edit can queue behind earlier events on its stream, and that widening attachTimeout hides that delay rather than removing it.

e2e: tighter, so the next stall fails loudly

applyCommitRequestWithGenerateName goes from attachTimeout: 8s to 4s, and maxDuration from 8s to 4s. The new attach window is inside the configuration reference's 4–5s for a loaded cluster and well under the e2e grace (10s). Any head-of-line stall now fails E12 and the generateName spec with NoWindow every time, rather than passing slowly. The comment says not to widen it.

label-selection-follow-ups.md item 1 is closed. Head-of-line blocking itself (an event that legitimately waits out the grace still delays its stream) stays open in open-asks-priority.md.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • Documentation update

Who a removal is credited to changes in two cases, with no API change:

  • real deletions on selected streams are now attributed;
  • a removal with no evidence is unresolved instead of being credited to the last editor.

On dashboards, tier="latest" drops to near zero, because it now appears only when the sticky pointer was evicted.

Testing

  • task lint and task test pass locally (coverage 80.0%, baseline 80.2%, within tolerance)
  • New tests for the removal ladder (fact_index_removal_cause_test.go): exit first, late exit on arrival, uid-only delete at once (terminating or not), no last writer, rv-only exit, terminating needs the deletion, batch-then-wake, and the accepted risk
  • The selector corpus test replays the captured selector-membership shapes. cm-gone and cm-held now name their deleters, and the exit-then-delete case is split into its resolved and accepted-risk orders.
  • removal_query_test.go: the author query is identical with and without a selector
  • e2e: runs in CI. E12 at a 4s attach is the regression check for this fix.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Removal events now use evidence tied to the change that caused them, consistently whether or not a watch uses a label selector. Deletions can be attributed to their deletion record, while label exits can be attributed to the matching update.
    • Removals without qualifying evidence are left unresolved instead of being attributed to an earlier writer. Waiting for evidence may delay later events in the same stream.
  • Documentation

    • Updated attribution guidance to explain resolution rules, wait behavior, and known trade-offs.

…tch's selector

A DELETED frame from a label-selected stream was a "filtered removal": it
resolved only on the fact at the object's exact (uid, resourceVersion). A
real deletion never fills that slot, so every deletion on a selected stream
waited out the whole --author-attribution-grace and then shipped unresolved,
holding its stream for that long. A Flux prune of N selected objects stalled
the stream for N x grace, which is what made the E12 save spec fail NoWindow.

Attribution no longer reads the selector. A removal is credited only to the
request that caused it, decided from the facts and the object alone:

- an object that was not terminating: a patch, update or delete at its own
  resourceVersion first (a label exit), then deletion evidence;
- a terminating object: the sticky removal pointer first, and only a delete
  at its version, as before.

The object's last write is no longer a fallback for a removal: it names who
edited the object, not who removed it, so a removal without evidence is
unresolved. The index now files a whole delivered batch before it wakes any
waiter, so a relabel and a delete that arrive together are read together.

One wrong author is accepted and documented: an object relabeled out and
deleted by someone else within about one audit batch, where the delete's
fact is in the index first (two API servers) or the relabel's is lost,
names the deleter. The spec gains "What attribution gives up, on purpose",
and interpreting-metrics gains an alert on tier="absent", which is every
event that held its stream for the full grace.

…fails them

applyCommitRequestWithGenerateName waited 8s to attach. That is close enough
to the e2e attribution grace (10s) that a save's edit queued behind another
event waiting out the grace could still pass, slowly, or flake. It now waits
4s, inside the 4s to 5s the configuration reference recommends for a loaded
cluster and well under the grace, so a head-of-line stall fails the Flux E12
and generateName specs with NoWindow every time rather than some of the
time. maxDuration follows to 4s; it only bounds the save's own writes.

📝 Walkthrough

Removal attribution now uses evidence about the request that caused an object to leave view, regardless of the watch label selector. The fact index checks removal-specific evidence, waits for qualifying facts, and returns unresolved when none arrives within the grace period.

Changes: Removal attribution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Selector-independent removal queries
internal/watch/author_resolver.go, internal/watch/target_watch.go, internal/watch/removal_query_test.go, docs/spec/attribution.md
The watch path no longer marks selected-stream deletions as filtered removals. Removal queries use the same shape across selector settings and retain the terminating-object flag.
Cause-specific fact lookup
internal/queue/fact_index.go, internal/queue/author_fact.go, internal/queue/fact_index_*test.go, docs/architecture.md, docs/spec/attribution.md
The index checks eligible evidence at the removal version and then deletion and collection evidence. It no longer attributes a removal to an earlier write. Batch facts are stored before waiters wake.
Wait behavior and operational guidance
docs/configuration.md, docs/design/*, docs/spec/watch-event-ordering-and-attribution-grace.md, docs/interpreting-metrics.md, test/e2e/commit_request_e2e_test.go
The documentation describes grace-period outcomes, shard delays, and attribution trade-offs. The end-to-end test helper sets attachTimeout and maxDuration to 4 seconds.

Remove the duplicate latest row from the tier table.

The table now has two latest rows: Line 1019 and this new Line 1021. They describe the same tier and disagree. Line 1019 says "who removed it". Line 1021 says "the object's own delete, when the sticky slot was evicted". The name row on Line 1020 says "the same", so it depends on the row above it. Keep one latest row, directly above name. Fold the sticky-eviction qualifier into that row.

Wait for all three indexed entries before resolving. waitForFacts(2) can return before Bob's fact is applied.

Carol's delete fact adds both the latest and sticky removal entries. The count can therefore reach two from Carol's batch alone. Bob's fact is published in a later batch and can be applied after waitForFacts(2) returns.
