Repository navigation
feat!: one GitReceiver for many repositories - #432
Conversation
A GitReceiver is the endpoint a Git host notifies on a push: a type, a token Secret in its own namespace, and an accessFrom policy for GitProviders in other namespaces. Its controller publishes status.webhookPath, derived from the token as before, and reports ListenerDisabled when the operator serves no receiver. GitProvider gains spec.gitReceiverRef beside spec.receiver, and a GitReceiverReady condition that is not part of Ready: GitReceiverNotFound, NamespaceNotAuthorized, or GitReceiverNotReady. It is woken by the receiver and by Namespace label changes, so it never waits out the steady requeue. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A route is now a GitReceiver's status.webhookPath, and one GitReceiver serves every GitProvider that references it and that it admits. A delivery names its repository and branch: the handler reads every clone and web URL the host fills (GitHub and Gitea repository.*, GitLab project.*), compares them with each provider's spec.url as internal/repourl normalizes them, and wakes the branch worker writing that branch for each matching provider, once. Admission is the same authz check the provider's GitReceiverReady condition reports. A generic-hmac body must now name its repository: without one a shared receiver cannot route it, so it is invalid (400) rather than broadcast. gitopsreverser_receiver_deliveries_total gains receiver_namespace and receiver_name, and unmatched splits into unreferenced, unknown_repository and unknown_branch, all still answered 202. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
spec.receiver stays in the schema only so that setting it is refused at admission, with a message naming spec.gitReceiverRef: a pruned field would apply cleanly and leave a provider that used to be notified silently unnotified. The rule sits on spec so validation ratcheting cannot wave a stored value through. GitProvider.status.webhookPath is removed outright; the path is GitReceiver.status.webhookPath. The bi-directional guides' complete examples, which the applier tests decode strictly, declare a GitReceiver and reference it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
configuration.md gains a GitReceiver section: routing by the repository a payload names, the fields read per host, the Ready and GitReceiverReady reasons, and what accessFrom grants. UPGRADING leads with the migration, including that a GitReceiver named after the old provider keeps its path, so the host's webhook needs no change. definitions, architecture, security-model, rbac, interpreting-metrics and the bi-directional guide follow. The chart's NOTES say, when the listener is on, that a GitReceiver and an exposed route are left to the installer. The e2e receiver helper creates a GitReceiver, references it from the spec's GitProvider, and waits for GitReceiverReady=True before registering the Gitea hook; each spec deletes its GitReceiver. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The envtest manager runs the GitReceiver controller, and a spec touches only objects: the provider's condition must follow the receiver appearing, getting its token on the token poll, and being deleted, well inside the steady requeue. A delivery now wakes every GitProvider, in any namespace, whose spec.url names the repository it reports. GitProvider.spec.gitReceiverRef, the GitReceiverReady condition and GitReceiver.spec.accessFrom are removed: once routing read the payload's repository, the reference only narrowed a set the URL already narrows, at the cost of a line per provider and an admission per namespace for a GitHub App. Waking across namespaces is made safe by two changes. A branch worker holds at most one pending push notice, folding later reports into it, so a run of deliveries costs one ref advertisement at a time. And a verified delivery is answered 202 with no body, so a token holder cannot learn whether another namespace tracks a repository. GitBranch.status.remote.lastPushNoticeAt replaces the condition: it says deliveries actually reach the branch, which a resolved reference never did. The unreferenced metric outcome goes with the reference. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

lastPushNoticeAt moves from status.remote to a top-level GitBranch status field. Inside the remote stanza it was published only with a successful look, so a delivery whose Git read then failed stayed invisible, which contradicted the advice that its absence means the delivery or URL match failed. A stanza with no look would have needed an empty commit, which already means "branch absent". NotifyPush now wakes the GitBranch, which publishes the receipt under the same once-a-minute floor. It is cleared when the GitProvider is recreated for another repository, where it used to carry the old repository's timestamp into the new stanza. The docs now say plainly that folding bounds the queue, not the rate: a stream of deliveries can keep a worker reading continuously, an accepted availability cost with no per-worker cooldown. …itory While a GitProvider is recreated for another repository, the worker of the repository it left still serves the GitBranch until a GitTarget reconcile replaces it. lastPushNotice found it by GitBranch alone, so the old repository's notice could be published right after the repoint cleared the field. WorkerForGitBranchAt returns the worker only for the current repository branch key. The docs now name the third reason lastPushNoticeAt stays absent: the repository matches, but no branch worker writes the branch (unknown_branch). The chart README's CRD inventory and both manual `kubectl delete crd` commands omitted gitreceivers.configbutler.ai, so following them after an uninstall left the CRD and its objects behind. The security model's inventory of Secrets read by name now includes a GitReceiver's token. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Phase 3 of the GitBranch/KubeProvider plan, gitops-api ask #30. Stacked on #431; retarget to
mainonce that merges.A GitHub App has one webhook endpoint, and until now every
GitProvidercarried its own receiver with its own token. The push receiver is now a namespaced kind of its own,GitReceiver, and nothing references it: a delivery wakes everyGitProvider, in any namespace, whosespec.urlnames the repository the delivery reports. What a delivery does
GitReceiver'sstatus.webhookPath, found through a cache index. The token Secret is read from the receiver's own namespace, and the path is re-derived from it, so a rotated token stops the old path at once. The signature is checked over the raw body before anything in it is read. Every way of not reaching a verified receiver is the same404.repository.clone_url,ssh_urlandhtml_url(GitHub alsogit_url). GitLab fillsproject.git_http_url,git_ssh_urlandweb_url. API URLs and homepages are not read.GitProviderfrom the cache and wakes the branch worker writing that branch for each provider whosespec.urlmatches one of those URLs, asinternal/repourlnormalizes them.NotifyPushanswers only for the provider whoseGitBranchholds the branch, so a branch is woken once, however many spellings or providers name it.202with no body.Checked against the running e2e Gitea (1.27). A real
git pushcarriesclone_url/html_urlbuilt from ROOT_URL, which match the in-cluster provider URLs, plus anssh_urlon a different host (gitea-ssh…). Reading every spelling is what lets an SSH provider match too. Gitea's "Test delivery" button builds its URLs from the request's own host instead, so it counts asunknown_repository. That is harmless: it still gets a202.Why no reference
The first version of this PR had
GitProvider.spec.gitReceiverRef,GitReceiver.spec.accessFromand aGitReceiverReadycondition. Once the receiver routes by the payload's repository, the reference only narrowed a set the URL already narrows. It cost a line of wiring per provider, plus an admission in every namespace for a GitHub App. The condition also reported the wrong thing: that a reference resolves, not that deliveries arrive or that the URLs match, and a URL mismatch is the failure users will hit. Argo CD's webhook routes the same way: one endpoint, matched against every Application'srepoURL.Two things the reference was quietly protecting are now handled where they belong:
GitReceivercan now wake any matching worker. A branch worker therefore holds at most one pending push notice: a report that arrives while one waits is folded into it (pendingPushNotice), and the slot is taken before the remote is read. A run of deliveries costs one ref advertisement at a time and never crowds writes out of the queue. The folded notice keepsafteronly while all reports agree, and otherwise reads as a push not yet seen, the safe side fornoteBusyPushNotice.Accepted tradeoff: folding bounds the queue, not the rate. A token holder who keeps delivering can keep a matching worker reading its remote continuously. That availability cost is accepted for now, with no per-worker cooldown, and the security model, UPGRADING, configuration and the plan doc say so. A cooldown with a deferred follow-up would bound it later without bringing the reference back.
{"matched": N}reply would tell a token holder in one namespace whether another namespace tracks a repository and branch. The202now has no body. What a delivery did is on the metric and on the branch. What replaces the condition:
GitBranch.status.lastPushNoticeAt, the time a delivery last reached the branch. It records receipt, apart fromstatus.remote, so it is set even when the look the delivery caused cannot read the remote. Astatus.remotestanza with no look would have needed an emptycommit, which already means "branch absent".NotifyPushwakes theGitBranch. The first notice is published at once, and later ones at most once a minute, usingstatus.remote's interval measured from the published notice. The field is kept across a restart, and cleared when theGitProvideris recreated for another repository. If it is absent after a push, the host does not reach the receiver, or names the repository by a URL other thanspec.url.Decisions
/git-push/<hex HMAC-SHA256 of "namespace/name", keyed by the token>, published onGitReceiver.status.webhookPath. AGitReceiverthat takes the old provider's name and token Secret gets the same path, so the host's webhook survives the migration untouched. UPGRADING says so.GitReceiver.ReadyreportsSecretNotFound,SecretMalformed, orListenerDisabled, which means the operator runs with--receiver-bind-address=0, so nothing serves the path it still publishes. While the token is missing it re-checks every 30s (RequeueReceiverTokenInterval), because Secrets are not watched and no delivery can reach a receiver until its path is published.gitopsreverser_receiver_deliveries_total{receiver_namespace, receiver_name, type, outcome}.unmatchedsplits intounknown_repository(no provider has that repository; routine on an org or App hook) andunknown_branch(the repository matches, but no worker writes that branch). Both still answer202.spec.receiverstays in the schema only so admission refuses it, with a message naming the replacement. The CEL rule sits onspec, as in phases 1 and 2, so ratcheting can't wave a stored value through.GitProvider.status.webhookPathis removed.generic-hmacbody must name its repository (400otherwise): a shared receiver can't route one that does not.Known gap (documented)
A provider that reaches the host under another name, such as
ssh.github.com:443or a vanity domain, is not matched: the normalizer can't prove those names equal. Its foreign pushes are still found by the next rejected push or the refresh. This is the plan's "repository aliases" item. The old receiver didn't compare repositories for host types at all, so this is a real narrowing, and UPGRADING says so.Validation
