A button can also be defined as an array with an optional `label` and `permissions`. The [permissions](users#users-and-permissions) work the same as for [form fields](forms#field-options): only one of them is needed to grant access. A button the user has no access to is hidden, and the AJAX handlers that perform its action abort with a 403 error.

```yaml
view:
list: $/acme/pay/models/invoiceitem/columns.yaml
toolbarButtons:
create: Add a line item
delete:
label: Remove line item
permissions: [acme.pay.delete_invoice_items]
```

site:github.com/wintercms/winter "onRelationManagePivotCreate" "onRelationManageCreate" relation controller permissions

💡 Result:

In the current `develop` implementation, **neither handler has a built-in permission check**:

- `onRelationManageCreate()` initializes the relation and saves the related model.
- `onRelationManagePivotCreate()` initializes the relation and syncs selected models with pivot data.
- The behavior does define `readOnly`, but I found no `hasAccess` check in the behavior source. So hiding controls via read-only/UI configuration should not be treated as authorization for direct AJAX calls. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wintercms/winter/develop/modules/backend/behaviors/RelationController.php))

Winter’s backend controller checks the controller’s `$requiredPermissions` when processing non-public actions. For relation-specific permissions, add explicit checks in controller overrides of these handlers—or enforce the rule in model authorization/validation—before delegating to the RelationController behavior. ([github.com](https://github.com/wintercms/winter/blob/develop/modules/backend/classes/Controller.php?utm_source=openai))

**Scope:** This is based on the `develop` branch source, not a specified release; behavior in another version remains unverified.

Winter CMS pull request 1574 RelationController toolbarButtons permissions onRelationManageCreate onRelationManageUpdate onRelationManageDelete onRelationManageAdd onRelationManageRemove onRelationManagePivotCreate

💡 Result:

PR **#1574** (“Add permissions to relation toolbar buttons”) proposes permission-aware `RelationController` toolbar buttons. For example, a button can be configured with a `label` and `permissions`; it’s hidden if the current backend user lacks any configured permission, and the corresponding action handler returns **403** if access is denied. (GitHub pull request 1574 in wintercms/winter (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference))

The permission checks map to handlers as follows:

- `create` → `onRelationManageCreate`
- `update` → `onRelationManageUpdate`
- `delete` → `onRelationManageDelete`
- `add` / `link` → `onRelationManageAdd` and `onRelationManagePivotCreate`
- `remove` / `unlink` → `onRelationManageRemove` (GitHub pull request 1574 in wintercms/winter (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference))

The PR is **open**, not merged, and targets `develop`; these changes are therefore proposed behavior, not confirmed as available in a released version. (GitHub pull request 1574 in wintercms/winter (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference))

Do not publish this permission contract before the core change is merged.

wintercms/winter#1574 is still open, so the documented behavior is not part of develop. The current RelationController handlers, including onRelationManageCreate() and onRelationManagePivotCreate(), do not enforce the per-button permission or return HTTP 403. Integrators can therefore configure permissions without the documented protection.

Remove the documentation in backend/relations.md that presents per-button
permissions and 403 enforcement as available behavior, including its example and
