fix(documents): stop a cache blip from failing a write it cannot make stale - #1045
Conversation
… stale A Redis reply that misses the 0.1s read timeout was turning stored writes into 500s. In production every still-firing group fails after the commit: purgeWrittenDocuments (CLOUD-3R97), the definition purge in the epoch publish (CLOUD-3R95) and the epoch save itself (CLOUD-3R8D). Throwing there cannot undo the write; it only reports a stored write as failed and makes queue workers repeat it. Every step after the commit already leaves the cache fail-closed when it cannot be confirmed, so it is now retried and then logged instead of thrown. Purge events still fire and their listener failures still reach the caller. Before the commit, a document purge that outlasts its retries used to refuse the write. It now blocks the collection's epoch instead, the marker #1042 showed is the one that guarantees no stale read; only when that fails too is the write refused, as during a real outage. The finish purge is retried only while #finished is unchanged, so a purge that timed out but landed is never counted twice. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

3921-3928: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winShare cache reachability across post-commit activation.
withRetries()makes three attempts and sleeps 100 ms and 200 ms between retryable failures.activateDocumentInvalidation()continues through every collection token after an activation failure. Each activation can run multiple retry groups for owner release,#finishedcompletion, epoch publication, and definition purging.A cache outage can therefore add at least 300 ms per retry group for every remaining collection, in addition to cache-operation latency. Carry reachability through post-commit activation after a retry group exhausts its attempts. Keep the owner-release load check and the
#finished/epoch verification on the remaining attempt. These checks preserve fail-closed behavior and determine whether a purge landed.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

246-246: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winKeep the refusal active through the post-commit retry.
The callback refuses only one purge.
purgeWrittenDocuments()retries the purge up to three times, so the retry can succeed before the epoch fallback runs. The test can therefore pass without covering the failed-purge path. The related tests do not cover this paused-commit reader-fill scenario.🐛 Suggested fix

Problem
On Appwrite Cloud (database 8.3.12), a Redis reply that misses the 0.1s
readTimeoutstill turns writes into 500s. All three groups still firing on 1.51.40 fail after the commit, so the client sees a 500 for a write that is stored, and queue workers (e.g.worker.certificates, attempt 1 of 5) run it again:Cache purge … could not be confirmedpurgeWrittenDocuments()after commitCache purge … could not be confirmedpublishDocumentCacheEpoch()→ definition purge, after commitFailed to activate document cache epochpublishDocumentCacheEpoch()save, after commitEach is

After the commit (
invalidateCommitted()): throwing cannot undo the write, and every step already leaves the cache fail-closed when it cannot be confirmed (#1042: a tombstone left in place lapses into a new epoch, never back to the old one). So:#finishedpurge, the epoch save and the definition purgeConsole::warning, not thrownpurgeWrittenDocuments()reports a failure only when the epoch fallback could not cover it, and stops retrying per document once the cache is unreachable, so a large batch does not pay the backoff for every rowBefore the commit: a document purge that outlasts its retries used to refuse the write. It now blocks the collection's epoch, the marker #1042 showed is the one that guarantees no stale read after recovery. A write is refused only when that fails too, as during a real outage (
testAWriteTheCacheCannotInvalidateIsRolledBackstill holds). A collection already blocked in the scope skips the per-document retries.#finishedis never counted twice: the finish purge is retried only while the generation is unchanged, re-read before each retry, so a purge that timed out but landed is not repeated.Tests
