Updates request-context handling to keep address validation within the authentication provider that uses it, and makes router configuration consistent across supported builds.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Session-cookie and Tailscale authentication now account for client and peer IP addresses alongside configured proxy trust. Invalid or unsuitable client IPs are excluded from Tailscale lookups.
    • Platform-provided headers no longer override configured proxy trust.
    • When trusted proxies aren’t configured, the warning now clarifies that IP-based authentication is safe only for direct client connections.

Walkthrough

Router setup clears Gin’s platform-header trust setting. Middleware uses client and peer addresses to select an IP for cookie authentication and Tailscale lookups. Tests cover address selection, and the warning for an empty trusted-proxy configuration has been updated.

Changes: Address trust handling

I would also recommend either failing to initialize with the Tailscale provider or displaying a warning when we don't have trusted proxies set and thus no way to obtain the client IP.

@nicotsx I am not really happy with the implementation here. I believe it's taking a step in the wrong direction.

Ideally, we need to have a simple check at start-up that checks if Tailscale is configured as an authentication provider. If it is configured, we need to do a simple check:

  • If it's the only authentication provider and we have no trusted proxies, fail the startup by returning an error
  • If it's not the only authentication provider, return nil early from the Tailscale service to avoid needless lookups in the API and add log a warning about Tailscale being disabled as an authentication provider due to the missing trusted proxies configuration option.

Then in the request, there is no point in replicating the trusted proxies function that Gin already does for us. We can use c.ClientIP() directly since we already validated that we do in fact have trusted proxies in the startup.

This start-up check avoids the need for extra validation during runtime and can ensure that everything is configured correctly before we even start receiving requests.
