Command dwords of passthru commands are passed in CPU byte order, the kernel takes care of the conversion. Converting the pattern to little endian beforehand swapped it twice on big endian architectures. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The 'nvme list' JSON output differs between nvme-cli versions and changed again in nvme-cli 3.0. Read the controllers and namespaces of a subsystem from sysfs instead, which works independent of the installed nvme-cli version. The kernel scans namespaces asynchronously after the controller went live, allow waiting for the expected number of namespaces to show up. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

libnvme-1.x is replaced by libnvme3 shipped with nvme-cli 3.x, which comes with a reworked API. As libblockdev is often backported to older distributions, both libraries need to be supported for a while. Instead of sprinkling #ifdefs over the plugin, introduce an internal backend API (nvme-backend.h) and move all the libnvme calls to a libnvme-1.x implementation of it (nvme-libnvme1.c). The generic code only uses the NVMe specification types, constants and static inline helpers from the libnvme headers, which are compatible between both libraries. The few constants renamed in libnvme3 to follow the NVMe specification are mapped in nvme-libnvme1.h. The backend returns negative errno values on failure, as libnvme3 does, instead of -1 with errno set. The extra arguments of bd_nvme_connect() are parsed by the generic code, and the topology is passed as a snapshot to the generic lookup functions. No functional change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
nvme-cli 3.0 merged libnvme into its tree and ships it as the new libnvme3 library with a reworked API. Devices are accessed through transport handles, commands are built with the nvme_init_*() helpers and errors are returned as negative errno values. Add a libnvme3 implementation of the backend API. The libnvme flavour is selected at build time with the new --with-libnvme configure option, by default libnvme3 is used when available. libnvme3 requires 3.2 or later. The Identify Controller bit field constants use the NVMe spec names since nvme-cli 3.2, e.g. NVME_CTRL_MEC_TWPME, NVME_CTRL_OACS_FNVMS, NVME_CTRL_OACS_NMS and NVME_CTRL_OACS_DSTS. Since 3.2, libnvme3.pc reports the nvme-cli release version, earlier releases report 1.0.0, the library ABI version. Following the DH-HMAC-CHAP to KX-HMAC-CHAP rename in nvme-cli, the "dhchap_key" and "dhchap_ctrl_key" extra arguments are now called "kxchap_secret" and "kxchap_ctrl_secret". The old names are kept as deprecated aliases. The configuration file is not supported with libnvme3 yet, libnvme3 dropped support for the JSON configuration file. Also note libnvme3 refuses a second identical connection to an already connected controller unless "duplicate_connect" is set. Resolves: storaged-project#1211 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
libnvme3 replaced the JSON configuration with an INI based /etc/nvme/nvme-fabrics.conf. Parameters of the first connection entry matching the bd_nvme_connect() arguments are applied, extra arguments still take precedence. Legacy JSON configuration files are not supported with libnvme3. nvme-cli converts an existing /etc/nvme/config.json to the INI format on its first fabrics command, but libnvme3 doesn't, and libblockdev doesn't either. Log a warning pointing to 'nvme config-convert' when the default configuration is used and an unconverted legacy file is found, as its options and keys would be silently ignored otherwise. A JSON file specified via the "config" extra argument fails to parse, mention the conversion in the error. libnvme3 treats a missing configuration file as an empty one, which is fine for the default file only. A missing file specified via the "config" extra argument is reported as an error. The libnvme-1.x backend keeps reading the JSON configuration file. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
libnvme3 keeps track of the owner of each connected NVMe-oF controller, e.g. boot volumes connected from the NBFT are owned by "nbft". Previously bd_nvme_disconnect() removed all matching controllers, including the ones other components depend on. With libnvme3, controllers connected by bd_nvme_connect() are now registered as owned by "libblockdev" (or by the new "owner" extra argument) and bd_nvme_disconnect() and bd_nvme_disconnect_by_path() only remove controllers owned by libblockdev. An already connected controller is never claimed. The new bd_nvme_disconnect_full() function allows to disconnect controllers of a different owner or, with BD_NVME_DISCONNECT_FORCE, regardless of their owner. libnvme-1.x has no ownership registry, the libnvme-1.x backend keeps disconnecting all matching controllers and ignores the owner. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
bd_nvme_disconnect() and bd_nvme_disconnect_by_path() called with NULL matched every NVMe-oF controller and disconnected all of them, including boot volumes or the root filesystem. This is how the code always behaved, but neither argument is nullable and disconnecting everything is the worst possible reaction to a programming error. Require exactly one of the subsystem NQN and the controller path for all disconnect functions, as bd_nvme_disconnect_full() already does. Bindings like PyGObject reject NULL for these arguments anyway, only C callers are affected. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

CI status for 02deb9f: Packit / testing-farm: all green except
GitHub Actions: these still need approval here. To avoid waiting, I ran the same workflows on my fork against the same commit (dwsuse#1, CI only, not for merging), and all passed:
These were exactly the jobs that failed on #1213, because it required libnvme3. |
This PR adds libnvme3 support to the NVMe plugin and keeps libnvme-1.x fully supported. It supersedes #1213, which will be closed.
Fixes: #1211
Background
#1213 ported the plugin to libnvme3 and dropped libnvme-1.x. In the review, @tbzatek asked to keep libnvme-1.x supported for a while, because libblockdev is often backported to older distribution releases. He shared an unfinished port that switches between the two libraries with
#ifdefs (tbzatek/libblockdev@6fff436e2).My view is still that requiring libnvme3 everywhere would be the simplest route: libnvme-1.x is no longer developed, and libnvme3 can be built on older distributions too. But I understand the backporting concern, so this PR does what was asked and keeps libnvme-1.x. It does so without spreading conditionals through the plugin. I think this is a good compromise:
libnvme-develand still build the libnvme-1.x backend.nvme-libnvme1.[ch]and oneconfigurebranch. No code in the shared plugin files needs to change.Design: a small backend API instead of
#ifdefsThe libnvme flavour is chosen at build time. The plugin is built against exactly one of the libraries, so there is no runtime switching.
nvme-backend.hdeclares an internal API: open/close a device, the admin commands (identify, get log pages, self-test, format, sanitize), host NQN/ID handling, a topology snapshot, connect and disconnect. All functions return 0, a negative errno, or a positive NVMe status, the convention libnvme3 uses.nvme-libnvme1.candnvme-libnvme3.cimplement that API. Each libnvme flavour is confined to one file.nvme-info.c,nvme-op.c,nvme-fabrics.c,nvme-error.c) never calls into libnvme directly. It only uses the NVMe specification structs, constants andstatic inlinehelpers from the libnvme headers.NVME_CTRL_OACS_FORMAT→NVME_CTRL_OACS_FNVMS). libnvme ≥ 1.13 already uses some of the new names, but for function-like accessor macros. So the shared code usesBE_-prefixed names, and each backend header (nvme-libnvme1.h,nvme-libnvme3.h) maps them to the library's own constant. This works with every libnvme release and needs no#ifdef.nmthat the shared object files reference no libnvme symbols.bd_nvme_connect()are parsed once into a neutral struct, and both backends apply it. The topology is passed to the sharedbd_nvme_find_*()functions as a snapshot, so the matching logic exists only once. How the two approaches compare on the plugin sources:
#ifdefport (6fff436, unfinished)#if(n)def HAVE_LIBNVME3blocks in the pluginnvme-backend.h)#ifdefThe only other version conditional is the existing
HAVE_LIBNVME_1_4check, which moved intonvme-libnvme1.c.Build configuration
autouses libnvme3 whenlibnvme3 >= 3.2is found, and falls back tolibnvme >= 1.3(the existing requirement) otherwise. The configure summary shows the flavour that was picked, e.g.NVMe plugin: yes (libnvme3). Distributions that want to stay on libnvme-1.x even when libnvme3 is installed can pass--with-libnvme=libnvme1.libnvme3 requires nvme-cli 3.2, which is not released yet. Up to 3.1, the Identify Controller constants used the old names, and
libnvme3.pcreported the library ABI version (1.0.0) instead of the release version, so no release could be required in configure. Both changed after 3.1 (linux-nvme/nvme-cli#4176). The duplicate-connect detection also needs the topology scan fix from linux-nvme/nvme-cli#4157. Both PRs are merged.Commits

None, apart from:
"kxchap_secret"/"kxchap_ctrl_secret"extra arguments are accepted as aliases of"dhchap_key"/"dhchap_ctrl_key".bd_nvme_disconnect_full()can be used. libnvme-1.x has no ownership registry, so the owner and flags are ignored and all matching controllers are disconnected, exactly likebd_nvme_disconnect()today."owner"extra argument is accepted and ignored.bd_nvme_disconnect()andbd_nvme_disconnect_by_path()keep disconnecting all matching controllers, with the same error messages. Both flavours
bd_nvme_disconnect(NULL)andbd_nvme_disconnect_by_path(NULL)now fail withBD_NVME_ERROR_INVALID_ARGUMENT. Before, aNULLselector matched every NVMe-oF controller on the host and disconnected all of them, boot volumes included. Neither argument is nullable, and PyGObject already rejectsNonefor them, so only C callers that passNULLby mistake are affected. CodeRabbit pointed this out in its review.libnvme3 builds
"config"extra argument and the default configuration now refer to the INI file/etc/nvme/nvme-fabrics.conf(plus its.d/drop-ins)./etc/nvme/config.jsonto the INI format on its first fabrics command (nvme config-convertdoes it explicitly). Neither libnvme3 nor libblockdev converts it. If libblockdev finds an unconverted legacy file (no INI file and noconfig.json.convertedmarker), it logs a warning that points tonvme config-convert. Otherwise its options and keys would be ignored without notice."config"fails with an error that mentions the conversion."config"is reported as an error; a missing default file is not.BD_NVME_ERROR_CONNECT_ALREADY, unless"duplicate_connect"is set. This is libnvme3 behaviour.bd_nvme_connect()are registered in the libnvme ownership registry (/run/nvme/registry/) as owned by"libblockdev", or by the new"owner"extra argument. An already connected controller is never claimed.bd_nvme_disconnect()andbd_nvme_disconnect_by_path()only remove controllers owned by libblockdev. Otherwise they fail with the newBD_NVME_ERROR_OWNED, and the message names the actual owner.bd_nvme_disconnect_full()can disconnect controllers of another owner, or any controller withBD_NVME_DISCONNECT_FORCE.About the ownership change, since it was raised in #1213: yes, this changes behaviour, but only for libnvme3 builds, and it follows the rules nvme-cli 3.x sets for every libnvme user. Until now, any component could take over global resources, e.g. tearing down an NBFT boot volume or a connection managed by a discovery daemon. That was the main complaint about
disconnect-all(linux-nvme/nvme-cli#2913). Callers that really want the old behaviour can request it explicitly withbd_nvme_disconnect_full(..., BD_NVME_DISCONNECT_FORCE).API additions
bd_nvme_disconnect_full(),BDNVMEDisconnectFlags,BD_NVME_ERROR_OWNED"owner","kxchap_secret","kxchap_ctrl_secret"("dhchap_key"and"dhchap_ctrl_key"are kept as deprecated aliases)Note for packagers
Since nvme-cli 3.0, libnvme3 is built from the nvme-cli source package. A system can end up with libnvme3 but without the
nvmetool, and then nothing converts an existing/etc/nvme/config.json. Distributions that switch libblockdev to libnvme3 should runnvme config-convertwhen upgrading from libnvme-1.x, e.g. from a package scriptlet. libblockdev only warns about an unconverted file and never modifies/etc/nvmeitself.Test report
