Summary

agentop server use <server> --agent <agent> now takes effect for any coding agent that goes through Cortex. The agent needs no setting of its own, and nothing in Cortex knows one agent or one model vendor.

Until now the router acted only on a request already addressed to a configured server's host. Claude Code qualified through ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. OpenCode on Zen never did, so routing it did nothing, and Bob Shell had no setting that could make it qualify. Model mapping knew only Claude's family words.

Capture. A routed agent's inference request, addressed anywhere (Anthropic, OpenCode Zen, Bob's gateway), is sent to its server at the server's path for its API format:

Path the agent sent ends in Path on the server
/chat/completions /v1/chat/completions
/v1/messages /v1/messages
/responses /v1/responses

Only a POST that inference-parser read as inference is captured. An agent's own tools can POST to any API whose path ends the same way, and its body and the server's key must not go to the inference server.

Models, decided by the server's answer. The router sends the model the agent asked for. Only when the server refuses it does it act:

  • The refusal is recorded for an hour.
  • The request is re-sent once, before the agent sees anything, with a substitute: the server's main model for a request with tools, or its helper model for one without.
  • While the refusal is recorded, requests for that model go with the substitute from the start.
  • A session keeps its substitute, so a conversation never changes model part-way.

Main and helper are words, not versions. Each resolves to the newest model on the server's /v1/models list whose name contains the word. The list is fetched at start-up and then hourly, and the last good copy is kept in the plugin store. A server adding a newer model needs no edit.

What changes:

  • Core: pctx.SetRedirectPath, and pipeline.Resender. A plugin may ask the forward proxy, once, to re-send a request after a non-2xx answer, before any byte reaches the client. The refused attempt and the re-send each get their own request id and rows.
  • Router: capture, the model rules, the list fetch, refusal records and per-session substitutes.
  • History rule: on a pin miss, an earlier capturable request recorded unredirected now means the session ran unrouted, so it stays unrouted. Without this, routing an agent would move its running conversations on their next turn.
  • agentop:
    • server add takes --main/--helper and checks both against the server's own list, read with the key just given.
    • agentop server shows what each word resolves to now.
    • The ~/.claude/settings.json checks are removed, because capture makes ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL unnecessary.
  • Breaking config change: opus, sonnet and haiku are removed with no migration, because no release has shipped the router (v0.9.0-rc.3 predates it). Decode refuses them by name and says what replaced them.
  • Docs: the plugin catalog, agentop's README, and the Claude Code and OpenCode agent pages.

Testing

  • Unit and listener tests for the capture predicate and path table, the model order, a re-send only on the model refusal and never twice, refusal records and their TTL, session substitutes surviving a list change, word resolution, and the list fetch.
  • The forward proxy tests check that the client sees only the second answer (plain and streamed), that a second refusal goes through, and that a refusal not re-sent is relayed byte for byte, including one past the 64 KiB peek. They also check that both attempts are recorded and each pairs with its own answer.
  • An end-to-end chain test covers inference-parser, tool-prune and the router together: a refused model is re-sent with the server's model, with the tool-prune saving priced at the model actually sent.
  • go test ./core/... and the agentop suites pass, and go vet and gofmt are clean.

Live, on this build, through a scratch Cortex in front of three LiteLLM servers:

Agent Routed to Result
OpenCode 2.0.26, Zen nemotron-3.5-lightning-free GLM server Main turn and title refused once, re-sent as the server's main and helper models; later turns sent with them from the start; file written and read back
Bob Shell 2.0.6 GLM server premium-ide became main; background and router became helper; file task done
Claude Code 2.1.295, talking to api.anthropic.com GLM server claude-opus-5-5 refused once, then the server's main model throughout
Claude Code Claude-serving server claude-opus-5-5 served exactly as asked

Known limits

  • Bob Shell's router tier lookup is answered by the helper model after its first refusal. It sends the whole conversation, and Bob discards the answer.
  • A main turn sent without tools gets the helper. That was 6 of 947 Claude Code opus requests in live traffic.
  • The refusal signal is LiteLLM's. A server of another kind never triggers a substitution.
  • Codex is not a supported agent yet. The Bob IDE was not tested.

Deferred from review

  • A credential in a captured request's query string still goes to the server. For example ?key=. Stripping it needs a pipeline API for editing the query, which plugins do not have.

  • The header rule is undocumented. On a request sent to a server it did not name, headers with a credential word in their name are dropped. This should be stated in plugin-catalog.md (key) and on the Claude Code page.

  • The credential-word match is approximate. It misses names such as Authentication or X-Jwt-Assertion, and it drops Idempotency-Key, which is no credential.

  • Installs built from main fail at start-up until their config is rewritten. main/helper are required, and servers.Verify stops agentop repairing a file that has two stale servers.

  • A failed model-list fetch waits an hour to retry. If the first fetch fails and the store holds no list, every refusal reaches the agent until the next fetch.

  • docs/plugin-reference.md does not document SetRedirectPath/RedirectPath or pipeline.Resender.

  • With a Resender in the chain, every non-2xx answer is peeked, including ones to requests the router did not redirect.

  • agentop server fetches model lists one server at a time, so each unreachable server adds a 10s timeout.

  • server add prints the server's whole model list for a word that matches nothing.

  • Code tidiness:

    • wentTo's doc comment still says a request to another host is no evidence.
    • The new forward-proxy helpers sit between recordOutboundRequestEvent's doc comment and its func.
    • OnRequest looks up byHost twice for the addressed host.
  • The resend fires only on a 403. Older LiteLLM versions send team_model_access_denied with a 401.

  • Version numbers attached to a name are ignored (qwen3, llama4), so "newest" can pick an older model.

  • The word match is a substring, so mini matches gemini-3-pro.

  • Each hourly fetch builds an HTTP client and never closes its idle connections.

  • TestResend_RefusesARedirect cannot fail: its test plugin lacks WritesDestination.

  • Usage hints still show the two-argument agentop server add <name> <url>.

  • The credential drop compares hostnames, not host and port.

  • The capture docs leave out a case: the catalog, the package doc and OnRequest's comment don't say that an unrouted agent's request is captured when its session is pinned to a server.

  • A missing test: a pinned session addressing the removed server's own host, which gets the 503.

  • A captured subagent conversation can still move. One already mid-task, in a session with no pin and no history, moves to the server, because turnOf counts every subagent request as a side request.

  • An addressed side request still goes to the server it named. With the base URL at server A and the agent routed to B, such a request in an unpinned session goes to A with the client's key.

  • The docs no longer say where a side request goes: a captured one goes to the agent's server, one addressed to a server is left as sent.

  • The docs no longer name what counts as a refusal: a 403 team_model_access_denied, or a 400 with Invalid model name passed in model=.

  • A session whose substitute the server retires fails on every turn until a new session.

  • count_tokens to the provider is not captured, so the conversation goes to Anthropic with the user's key.

  • A session's substitutes are written with the pin's TTL but not renewed with it.

  • keepSubstitute is an unlocked read-modify-write of the session's map.

  • The removed caveat about base-URL paths still holds for requests addressed to a server's host.

  • Small text items:

    • The package doc still mentions a refusal "for its model" that no longer exists.
    • A routed captured side request's record omits turn.
    • Some edited comment and doc lines are not re-wrapped.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Route supported inference requests from configured coding agents to a selected server, including requests addressed to other provider hosts. The agent’s chosen model is preserved when accepted.
    • If a server refuses a model, retry once with its configured main model for requests with tools or helper model for requests without tools. Sessions continue using the substitute.
    • Configure servers with main and helper model names, and view resolved models and routed agents in the server list.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup and routing guidance, including HTTP and HTTPS requirements and the limits of routing through opaque HTTPS tunnels.

…efused request

SetRedirectPath sends a redirected request to a path of the plugin's choosing,
for a server that takes an API under another prefix than the one the client
named. Resender lets a plugin ask the forward proxy, once, to send a request
again after a non-2xx answer and before any byte of it reaches the client; the
refused attempt and the resend are each recorded with their own request id.

…bstitute only a model the server refuses

The router now captures a routed agent's inference request addressed to a host
that is no server -- Anthropic, OpenCode Zen, Bob's gateway -- and sends it to
the agent's server at the server's path for its API format, so an agent needs
no setting of its own beyond going through Cortex. A request goes with the
model the agent asked for; when the server refuses it (LiteLLM's 403
team_model_access_denied) the refusal is recorded for an hour and the request
is resent once, before the agent sees it, with the server's main model for a
request with tools or its helper model for one without. Each is a word
resolved against the server's model list, fetched hourly, to the newest model
containing it. A session keeps its substitute.

The opus/sonnet/haiku mapping and agentop server's Claude Code settings check
are removed; no release shipped them. A session whose history shows it ran
unrouted on its provider stays unrouted, so routing an agent moves no running
conversation.

…ed row

The refused attempt's row was recorded after the Resender rewrote the model,
so it named the substitute. It now carries the parse as the attempt was sent.
Also records the live runs of the router with OpenCode and Claude Code.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The inference router captures eligible requests from configured agents and retries recognized model refusals with server-specific main or helper models. Server configuration and listing use model words resolved against fetched model catalogs. The proxy pipeline supports redirect paths and response-triggered retries.

Changes

Agent-neutral inference routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model words and server configuration
core/plugins/inferencerouter/routerconfig/*, cmd/agentop/..., cmd/agentop/tui/*, docs/agents/*, docs/plugin-catalog.md
Server configuration and agentop server add use required main and helper words. The CLI resolves these words against server model lists, and listing displays resolved models. The documentation describes the updated configuration and routing behavior.
Pipeline redirect paths and response retries
core/pipeline/*, core/listener/forwardproxy/server.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/*test.go
The pipeline adds validated redirect paths and resender support. The forward proxy can retry eligible non-2xx requests, restore response data when no retry occurs, and record separate events and request IDs for retry attempts.
Inference capture, fallback, and session state
core/plugins/inferencerouter/*, core/listener/forwardproxy/*test.go, docs/agents/*, docs/plugin-catalog.md
The router captures eligible inference requests and retries recognized model-access refusals with configured main or helper models. It records refusals, pins substitutes for sessions, refreshes model catalogs, and uses request history to determine routing.

Fetch the server model lists concurrently in agentop server.

resolvedWords makes a network fetch for each server, one after another. Each fetch can take up to 10 seconds. If several servers cannot be reached, the listing blocks for N×10 seconds before it prints anything. Run the fetches in parallel before you build the table.

Start the catalog goroutine only once per router instance.

If Init runs more than once on the same Router, the earlier goroutine remains active. Each call overwrites p.stopCatalogs, so Shutdown can cancel only the latest goroutine.

Filter credentials when the redirect changes the origin.

addressed identifies a server by hostname, but srv.target() includes the configured port. If an agent addresses a different port on that hostname, addressed == name skips credential filtering even though the request moves to another origin. Headers such as Cookie and X-Auth-Token then reach the configured server. Compare the original and target origins before deciding to retain provider credentials.

Update the credential-filtering condition around dropProviderCredentials to
compare the original request origin with the target origin from srv.target(),
including the port, and remove provider credentials whenever those origins
differ.

Fixes review: after server reset, a captured request was skipped before its session's pin to a server was read
Fixes review: a session's substitute was keyed by the requested name alone, so the first refused request fixed main or helper for both kinds

Summary

The Resender hook re-sends at most once, before any byte reaches the client. It only fires under enforce and only on a request this router redirected. The refused attempt and the re-send each get their own request id and rows. The re-send now strips hop-by-hop headers and Accept-Encoding the same way the first send does, which fixes CodeRabbit's earlier point. Capture requires inference-parser's parse, not just a path match, and provider credentials are dropped whenever a request moves to a server it didn't name. There are two suggestions inline, neither in the PR's deferred list in this form, and no blockers.

Checked locally at 3eb673b:

  • Tests: the core suites pass (core/pipeline, core/plugins/inferencerouter/..., core/listener/forwardproxy), and so do all the agentop suites except one test. That test, TestRunExec_BeforeFirstStartRunsAndSaysWhatIsLost, picks up SSL_CERT_FILE from my shell, passes with it unset, and lives in a file this PR doesn't touch.
  • Lint: gofmt -l and go vet are clean on the touched packages.
  • Release tags: none contain the router, so removing opus/sonnet/haiku without a migration breaks no shipped install.

// trailingDate is a date a provider appends to a model's name: -20251001 or

suggestion: trailingDate only strips 8-digit and YYYY-MM-DD dates. A 4-digit YYMM/MMDD suffix is read as a version number instead, and it outranks the real one. I ran these against this head:

word ids Resolve picks
mistral mistral-large-2411, mistral-large-3 mistral-large-2411
small mistral-small-2503, mistral-small-3.2-24b-instruct-2506 mistral-small-2503
gpt gpt-4-0613, gpt-4.1 gpt-4-0613

Mistral, Qwen (-2507) and older OpenAI ids all use this form, so main/helper can resolve to the older model on such a server. This is separate from the deferred qwen3/llama4 and substring items. Also stripping a trailing 4-digit token (-(\d{8}|\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}|\d{4})$) picks the newer model in all three cases, and a table case for each would pin it.

background calls can each have one of their own. A Claude model of no family the
server maps — `claude-fable-5-1` picked with `/model`, say — is refused with a 400
naming it, rather than sent to a model nobody chose.
Claude Code needs no setting of its own for this beyond going through Cortex.

suggestion: This page now tells users they can drop ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, but only a POST that inference-parser reads as inference is captured. /v1/messages/count_tokens is dialectNone (core/plugins/inferenceparser/dialect_test.go:37), and GET /v1/models is not a POST. With no base URL, both go to api.anthropic.com with the user's own key, and count_tokens carries the whole conversation. Under the setup this page used to describe (base URL at a server), both went to the server: "on a server's host every path is handled". So following the new advice sends prompts to Anthropic that used to stay on the server.

The deferred list has the count_tokens half, but this page is where a user decides whether to keep the base URL, so I'd say it here: anyone routing to keep prompts off Anthropic should keep ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL at one of the servers. The /model paragraph at the end of this section ("that request is routed like the rest") now only holds in that setup too.
