ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped fix to restore an existing portable provider-handoff path after session detachment, with live-session and active-run safeguards preserved. Regression tests cover the affected client and server states, and no schema, security, deployment, default, or static-analysis configuration changes are included. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Taking over this one. I’ll reduce the tests to the useful coverage, update the implementation against current main, and verify it before publishing the changes. |

Keep provider selection locked when no active provider-thread row exists.
A completed thread with no session and no active provider-thread row passes threadSupportsProviderHandoff. Web and mobile then allow another provider. The server classifies the next request as a new thread because isProviderSwitch requires an active provider-thread row. For non-v1_import history, that path creates a provider thread without a providerSwitchHandoff, so the new provider does not receive the saved conversation context.
Suggested fix
- // With no live session the server plans a portable handoff from saved app
- // history, so the outgoing provider's native thread ref is not required.
- return true;

+ return projection.providerThreads.some(
+ (thread) =>
+ thread.id === projection.thread.activeProviderThreadId &&
+ thread.appThreadId === projection.thread.id &&
+ thread.providerInstanceId === projection.thread.modelSelection.instanceId,

Thank you @FabioLukas123 for identifying the detached-provider handoff regression. Rebuilt as #24641, preserving the intended native-reference fix while retaining the source provider-thread guard so saved history is transferred. Compared the original two-file diff with the replacement: the regression and shared web/mobile behavior are retained; the unconditional idle fallback was replaced with the existing association check. Independent reviews and audited web evidence are in the replacement. Closing this superseded PR with credit. |
Problem
A detached thread could not switch providers when the outgoing provider had never returned a native thread reference, even though the server could hand off its saved history.
Change
Allow the existing portable handoff once there is no live session or active run. Keep negotiated session capabilities and the active-run guard authoritative. Web, desktop and mobile consume the shared helper; no server or adapter behavior changes.
Scope and approval
This is a focused fix to the existing provider-switch workflow. Retains the work by @FabioLukas123 in #19687, with the pinned main revision merged and original commits preserved. It adds no providers, model IDs or wire fields.
Verification
Root selected Fixture Handoff Target and sent through the real app pipeline to a copied repository Codex mock peer. The transport record contains thread creation, the exact prior-history marker
T3_19687_CONTEXT_MARKERinthread/inject_items, and a completed subsequent turn. This proves history reached the target transport; it makes no claim about external model comprehension.No external model or network call was made by the mock. Native desktop/mobile shells were not independently exercised. An identical temporary startup-recovery bypass preserved synthetic control rows on both variants; it was removed, the isolated database/settings restored, and the test server stopped.
Current-head CI runs after this update; earlier checks cover the original head only.
