What and why

A hands-on browser check of #376 and #378 found bugs that the unit tests missed. This PR fixes them. Refs #340, #378.

Hub messages and toasts never showed (hub)

  • The server stored the messages. But @devframes/hub-ui 1.2.3 lists them through devframes:plugin:messages:list, which comes from the separate @devframes/plugin-messages package, and Pangular didn't install it.
  • @devframes/plugin-messages and its --assets package are now dependencies (1.2.3). The assets package means the panel is served locally, not from a CDN. withMessagesPanel() installs the Messages devframe under the hub base, so it sits behind the request gate.
  • The messages appear as a Messages dock, and new errors show a toast with "Open in Pangular". Both were checked in Chromium.
  • Open in editor: the plugin requires @devframes/service-open, which then handled open-in-editor, and its root check is stricter than ours. Pangular's root check still runs first. Then the service is tried, and if it's missing or refuses, the already-checked path goes to launch-editor. That way, files under a second root (a served Analog root, for example) still open.

Group sidebar badges were unreadable (hub)

  • Inside .devframes-group-sidebar, hub-ui faded the whole dock button with op60, badge included. It also ignores badgeVariant there, so the badge was grey at 1.97:1 in light mode.
  • Now only the icon is faded. The badge is coloured from the dock label Pangular already sets: blue for new items, red with errors or warnings.
  • Measured in Chromium: 5.17:1 for blue and 4.83:1 for red.

Agent messages (hub)

  • The text under "Agent ran …" now skips the _untrusted_ notice line and JSON fences and shows the first useful line. It's still masked with redactText.
  • No message (and no badge count) is posted when the tool changed nothing ("No router state…", a refusal, a missing argument).

Two 404s on every Analog page (vite)

  • The injected script now calls initOverlay({ baseURL: '<hubBase>pangular/' }), the default base included. The auto-start entry waits one task and skips itself when initOverlay already ran, so it no longer probes /__connection.json and /__pangular/__connection.json first.

--print-config --port abc was accepted (mcp)

  • The port must be a whole number from 1 to 65535. Otherwise the CLI exits with code 1 and prints nothing.

How it was verified

  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
  • pnpm commit:check
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test:devtools: 2,163 tests, three runs, all green
  • pnpm test:panel: 471 tests
  • pnpm skills:check (.claude/ not changed)
  • Docs in apps/docs updated and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed
  • Checked in Chromium: the toast and Messages dock appear, and sidebar badge contrast is measured in dark and light

Notes for reviewers

  • New dependencies: @devframes/plugin-messages, @devframes/plugin-messages--assets, and @devframes/service-open, which the plugin requires. The service adds devframes:service:open:* RPCs, limited to the workspace root and a fixed list of editors.
  • Sidebar badge colours come from Pangular's English dock label format ((N new, with errors)), because hub-ui doesn't pass badgeVariant to the sidebar. Badges from other devframes stay grey.
  • "Changed nothing" detection matches the refusal and no-data openings the write tools return. The tools have no structured success flag to use instead.
  • Test noise: hub.test.ts prints a [DF0007] AsyncLocalStorage is not set warning from devframe on stderr. It was there before this PR and isn't a failure.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Hub badges now reflect error, warning, and new-item status, with improved inactive-state and keyboard-focus styling.
    • The Messages dock now shows clearer agent updates and avoids adding messages when an action makes no changes.
    • Opening a file in an editor now falls back to another available launcher if the preferred option cannot open it.
    • The overlay connects through the hub path and avoids starting a duplicate when explicitly initialized.
  • Bug Fixes
    • --print-config now rejects invalid ports outside the range 1–65535.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified overlay startup, Messages behavior, port limits, and editor-opening behavior.

Install @devframes/plugin-messages so the hub lists messages in a Messages
dock and shows error toasts. The open-in-editor RPC still checks the path
against Pangular's roots first, then tries the open service and falls back
to launch-editor when the service is missing or refuses the path.

Agent tool calls that changed nothing (no page, a refusal, an argument to

The injected overlay looked for the server on the default paths, so apps
served behind the hub base never connected. Start it with the hub's
baseURL, and let the auto-start entry wait a task so an explicit
initOverlay call starts the only overlay.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update hub message handling, overlay startup, editor launching, CLI port validation, hub rail styling, and extension bundle references. Documentation and tests describe and verify these changes.

Changes

Hub messages

Layer / File(s) Summary
Agent answer parsing and message posting
packages/devtools/src/hub-messages.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/hub-messages.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/popup-and-hub.md
Answer parsing extracts the first meaningful line from supported results. agentWrite skips messages for recognized no-change responses. Tests cover answer formatting and no-message outcomes.
Messages panel wiring and hub coverage
packages/devtools/src/hub-messages-panel.ts, packages/devtools/src/hub.ts, packages/devtools/package.json, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/hub.test.ts
Hub setup installs the messages devframe under the hub base. Dependencies include the messages plugins. Tests check the messages-list response and panel route.

Overlay startup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Overlay start tracking and deferred initialization
packages/devtools/src/overlay-start.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay-auto.ts, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/overlay.md
initOverlay increments a shared count. Automatic initialization runs in a scheduled task only if the count remains unchanged.
Hub-path injection and startup tests
packages/devtools/src/vite-overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/overlay-injected-fixture.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/overlay-manual.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/vite-overlay.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/vite.md
Vite injects an initOverlay call with the hub-derived path. Tests check that this path is used and that importing startup code does not create an additional connection.

Open-in-editor fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Service-first editor launch and fallback
packages/devtools/src/rpc/open-in-editor.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/__tests__/open-in-editor.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/inspectors/components.md, apps/docs/src/content/security.md
The launcher tries @devframes/service-open first and uses launch-editor when the service is unavailable or refuses a path. Tests cover fallback behavior and rejection of paths outside configured roots.

CLI configuration port validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Port parsing and print-config validation
packages/devtools/src/mcp-print-config.ts, packages/devtools/src/cli.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/mcp-print-config.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/cli.md
printConfigPort accepts integer ports from 1 through 65535, converts trimmed numeric strings, and preserves undefined. The CLI validates the port before printing configuration.

Hub rail styling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Group-sidebar status and focus styles
app/src/hub-rail-style.ts, app/src/__tests__/hub-rail-style.test.ts
Group-sidebar buttons keep full opacity while non-badge contents dim. Badge colors reflect dock status labels. Focus and reduced-motion styles are updated and tested.

Extension UI bundle references

Layer / File(s) Summary
Updated extension bundle references
extension/ui/index.html, extension/ui/assets/browser-agent-rpc-BXhoSh1z-BhKkMIUU.js
Both files now reference index-BbeEnYOw.js instead of index-DJmCe5Yg.js.

The delayed automatic startup can start app-state collection after the overlay has been explicitly disposed. Existing access checks and file-root validation limit exposure, but some authorization behavior in the added integrations could not be confirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new automatic-start timer is not owned by overlay disposal. If an importing script calls disposeOverlay before the next task, disposal finds no running instance and leaves the counter unchanged; the pending callback subsequently initializes an overlay. With a reachable devtools server, app-state collection can remain active after explicit teardown, potentially without the floating button. At the PR base, automatic initialization registered its instance immediately, allowing the same disposal sequence to stop it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The teardown escape affects a browser page that imports the automatic entry and disposes it before the scheduled startup, without an intervening explicit initialization. Successful reporting still depends on a reachable devtools server and its normal checks. The supported outcome is unintended continued page inspection, not a demonstrated authentication bypass or cross-tenant compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A dispose-before-next-task sequence leaves the automatic-start counter unchanged. The callback then creates an unstopped instance, which may connect and report app state after teardown. This newly reachable lifecycle sequence is supported by source comparison, but no attacker exploitation or runtime reproduction was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Messages plugin is installed into the same hub instance receiving authentication options. Its panel sits below the hub base, where local HTTP middleware and WebSocket upgrade wrappers enforce request policy. This establishes shared local transport controls, not the unavailable plugin's per-operation mutation authorization.
  • observed — Editor fallback receives the same canonical, root-validated file as the service. The head nevertheless replaces every service rejection with a direct-launch attempt. Tests establish the intended second-root fallback and refusal outside all configured roots; they do not establish the external service's rejection taxonomy. A broader authorization bypass therefore remains unproven.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Notification filtering remains downstream of configured agent exposure and safety checks. Feed failures are isolated from tool results, so suppressing no-op notifications does not make refused or read-only actions executable.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Include pending automatic startup in the overlay lifecycle, using a cancellable task or generation invalidated by disposal. Preserve explicit-start precedence while making disposal terminal until a deliberate new initialization.
  • proposed — Document or classify editor-service rejection reasons before downgrading to direct launch, and establish the Messages dependency's mutation authorization contract. These are control-clarity proposals, not verified additional vulnerabilities.

Shorten the paragraph to follow the docs style rules.

The paragraph has long sentences with several ideas. The docs guideline says "One idea per sentence. Keep sentences short and plain." Also, the condition should come first. Split the sentence that starts with "If the importing code calls".

The no-change check skipped every answer that starts with "No", which would
hide a real change such as "No longer paused; recording resumed." It now
matches only the no-data openings the tools return.

Also splits the "One overlay per page" paragraph into shorter sentences.
