Description

Adds test/e2e/features/cos_preflight.feature covering the phase-level pre-apply (dry-run) checks, which surface on the ClusterObjectSet as Ready=False / PreconditionsNotMet via the controller's A pre-apply check rejected phase "…": … message.

Three scenarios:

  1. Non-existent namespace — a phase object targets a namespace that doesn't exist → PreconditionsNotMet (namespaces "…" not found).
  2. Invalid spec — a phase object fails API-server schema validation (a Pod with no containers) → PreconditionsNotMet (Pod "…" is invalid: spec.containers: Required value).
  3. Recovery — the revision keeps retrying and returns to Ready=True / AllObjectsReady once the missing target namespace is created, exercising the self-heal contract (no re-creation of the revision needed).

Testing

Ran the suite against the object-controller built from this branch's base on a local experimental KIND cluster:

3 scenarios (3 passed)
13 steps (13 passed)

Notes

  • Experimental-only; tagged @BoxcutterRuntime. Reuses existing step definitions; no step code changes.
  • Namespace names are derived from ${COS_NAME} (unique per scenario) so the missing/recovery namespaces don't collide under concurrent runs; the recovery namespace is created via resource is applied so it is tracked for cleanup.
  • Scoping note: I also evaluated a "missing CRD / unregistered Kind" scenario, but in the current controller an unregistered GVK fails earlier (watch/REST-mapping) as a transient error and leaves the revision Ready=Unknown/Pending rather than PreconditionsNotMet, so it is intentionally omitted.
  • Complements the already-merged-path work: referenced-content preconditions (revision.feature) and static validation (cos_static_validation.feature, 🌱 use "preflight" in ClusterObjectSet rejection messages; add static validation e2e #3026). ClusterObjectSet ObjectCollision coverage remains a planned follow-up PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added end-to-end coverage for ClusterObjectSet preflight validation. Scenarios verify that missing namespaces and invalid Pod specifications result in a not-ready status with rejection details. Recovery is also checked: after the missing namespace is created and reconciliation runs, the object set becomes ready.

Note: the scenarios here assert the ClusterObjectSet condition message A preflight check rejected phase "…": …. That wording is introduced in #3026 (which rewords the controller's "pre-apply check" messages to "preflight check"). This PR should merge after #3026.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds end-to-end scenarios that check ClusterObjectSet preflight failures for a missing namespace and an invalid Pod spec. A recovery scenario checks readiness after the missing namespace is created and reconciliation is triggered.

Test automatic recovery without a manual reconciliation trigger.

The controller retries preflight failures every 10 seconds. The explicit reconciliation step bypasses that retry path, so the scenario does not test the promised automatic recovery. Remove the trigger.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 12 included reviews per hour; 9 remain after this review.

Add a cos_preflight.feature suite covering the phase-level pre-apply
checks that surface on the ClusterObjectSet as Ready=False/
PreconditionsNotMet:

- an object targeting a non-existent namespace,
- an object with an invalid spec (a Pod with no containers), and
- recovery: the revision returns to Ready=True/AllObjectsReady once the
  missing target namespace is created.

Assertions match on "check rejected phase ..." so they hold regardless of
the exact leading wording of the controller message.

Here we are explicitly triggering the reconciliation: we miss checking the controller to re-queue the reconciliation, that should happen in 10 seconds if everything works as expected.
Still it would mean this test will take 10 seconds every time... never mind, probably not worth it 😅
