| A transient internal error (e.g. an API read failure) leaves the `Ready` condition unchanged and is retried with backoff; it is not reported as a distinct reason, so on a first reconcile the condition may remain absent (`Unknown`). |

WDYT about setting Ready to Unknown with reason RetryableError? That is the most truthful thing we can say.
Or maybe we can figure out a way for a RetryableError to only cause a condition to flip after a certain number of consecutive failed retries?
I'm worried about a situation where our code has decided that an error is transient, but then it turns out that it is not transient and our status gives no indication of that.

I was thinking of following this PR with generating an event for these transient errors - that way we at least get some kind of external signal. I really think we shouldn't be surfacing controller state through the object - otherwise we're being kinda edge based. But, I agree this leaves that case open =/ ultimately, I think we need to cover this gap through monitoring and metrics.

+1 on the eventing idea. Need to be careful there to avoid sending too many duplicate events. There's an OLMv0 bug about that right now, I think.
But on the COS status, if we say Ready/Unknown/Indeterminate/could not evaluate readiness due to transient error, that's not controller state. That's accurate COS state, saying 🤷 ?

Transient errors now leave the Ready condition unchanged and return an error for rate-limited backoff requeue, instead of overwriting Ready with RetryableError. On a first reconcile the condition may remain absent (read as Unknown). The ClusterExtension no longer maps transient COS errors to Installed=Failed or Progressing=Retrying; it goes neutral. Remove the RetryableError reason constant and the setRetryableErrorConditions helper. determineFailureReason now treats only ObjectCollision, PreconditionsNotMet, and InvalidSpecification as installation failures. Description
Part 4/5 of a series completing the
ClusterObjectSet(COS)Readycondition vocabulary. Breaking (experimental API): removes a status reason.Transient errors now leave the
Readycondition unchanged and return the error for rate-limited backoff requeue, instead of overwritingReadywithRetryableError. On a first reconcile that hits a transient error beforeReadyis ever set, the condition stays absent (consumers read absent asUnknown).Changes
Ready. Experimental API only;
go-apidiff/crd-diffwill flag the removed reason constant. Updates unit tests (transient-error cases now assertReadyunchanged/absent; CEdetermineFailureReason/progressingFromReady) and regenerates CRD/manifests/API reference.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
