Description

Proposes the ClusterObjectDeployment contract using orb-operator as the reference and the existing ClusterObjectSet APIs as the integration target. Defines template and revision identity, Ready/Progressing conditions, metadata propagation, status summaries, and deadline/recovery semantics.

Documents the persisted rollout record alternative and the API decisions reviewers need to resolve before implementation. Flags the pending-timeout behavior when a deadline is removed. This PR changes one design document.

Jira: OPRUN-4785

Validation

  • Strict MkDocs build passed.
  • Proposed YAML example, source references, rendered tables, and whitespace checks passed.
  • git diff --check passed.

Reviewer Checklist

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a design proposal for the cluster-scoped ClusterObjectDeployment API and its relationship with ClusterObjectSets.
    • The proposal details template metadata, child naming, revision allocation across group members, and rollout health and status reporting.
    • It also describes readiness and progress conditions, object counts, pending-creation timing, progress deadlines, and behavior when deadlines are removed or exceeded.
    • Additional sections cover dependencies, review decisions, rollout scenarios, and follow-up work.

📝 Walkthrough

The design document proposes the ClusterObjectDeployment (COD) API and controller contract. It describes how COD manages ClusterObjectSet (COS) revisions, ownership, status, and progress deadlines.

type and reason supply that meaning. Preserve `lastTransitionTime` while condition
status is unchanged, and avoid identical status writes.

Clarify reversion after a denied revision create.

If COD observes B, cannot create B, and then receives A again, the highest owned active COS is still completed A and matches the current template. Lines 183–189 therefore report Progressing=False/NewClusterObjectSetProgressed, while the A → B → A rule requires a new higher revision. Clarify whether a denied B creation causes the restored A to receive a new revision. Otherwise, narrow the A → B → A rule.
