Since this field is required, no need for omitempty:

Good catch! The linter anyway (make api-lint-diff) enforces it for required fields:
api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go:51:2:kubeapilinter:requiredfields: field ClusterObjectSetSpec.Group should have the omitempty tag.
Seems it is deliberate for RequiredFields in kube-api-linter to cope with serialization: serializing without omitempty would serialize and empty group with an empty string (which also violates the validation rule of at least 1 char).

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Weird. Seeing "omitempty" on a required field is non-sensical to me. The field is required, therefore it simply is not possible for it to be empty, at which point "omitempty" is a distraction. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the nuance that doc is trying to explain.
I don't think it technically matters since that'll never actually come into play with the field being required and between 1 and 52 chars long.
What is your perspective of this linter rule? Does it make sense to you, or should we set to Ignore?

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Map the ClusterExtension name to a valid group before you assign it.
WithGroup(ext.Name) copies the ClusterExtension name into spec.group with no change. A ClusterExtension name is a DNS-1123 subdomain. It can be up to 253 characters long, it can start with a digit (for example 3scale-operator), and it can contain dots. The spec.group CEL rule ^[a-z]([a-z0-9-]*[a-z0-9])?$ and MaxLength=52 reject all of these names. For such a ClusterExtension, the API server rejects every COS apply, so install and Helm migration fail on every reconcile.
An earlier review thread said a sanitizing/hashing transformation was added. This code does not contain it. Either restore that function and use it at every group site, or make the group rule accept every valid ClusterExtension name. The group sites are:
- generation (Line 238)
Migrate(Line 285)Apply(Line 469)GetRevisionStates
If you hash the name, clusterExtensionRequestsForClusterObjectSet can no longer get the ClusterExtension name back from spec.group. In that case, map events through the owner reference or a label instead.

Oh, generateName may be something we need to think about specifically since we'll require a specific name format. Not sure what format kubernetes uses for the suffix, but to be safe we may want to look into the possibility of explicitly rejecting use of generate name.

This indexing setup makes sense, right? Because object-controller will need to know about specific COSs and index into them.

Description
Implement OPRUN-4739 by introducing required, immutable
ClusterObjectSet.spec.groupas the identity of a revision sequence. Revision lookup and handoff use the group regardless of controller owner references, including for ownerless revisions. For example, two revisions in the same group can hand off workload objects even with different owners; revisions in different groups remain subject to collision protection even when they share an owner.ClusterExtension remains the parent API in this intermediate step. Generated and Helm-migrated COS use the CE name as their group and retain CE controller owner references for cascading garbage collection. This implements the group behavior described in OPRUN-4781; introducing COD and its adoption/ownership-conflict behavior (OPRUN-4783) remains future work.
