Summary

Add Z-Image-Turbo ControlNet support (DiT, unified in-graph).

Works with the same logic as SD1.5/SDXL ControlNet: same CLI flags (--control-net, --control-image, --control-strength) and same server fields (control_image, control_strength). Mode-agnostic Union — any control map (canny/depth/pose/...) -> deterministic VAE mean encode -> 16->33ch zero-pad; 295 control_* tensors (15 control blocks + 2 refiners + stem) fused into the ZImageRunner graph, hints injected after base blocks 0,2,...,28 scaled by control_strength. No separate runner, no host round-trip; shared VAE and all legacy pipelines untouched.

Weights:

Note: tested only the final 2601 version of the CN.

#1365

Additional Information

Testing:

  • server + CLI, with and without control net loaded; no-control output unchanged
  • 295/295 control tensors resolved, 0 missing (bf16 safetensors + GGUF)
  • union modes canny/depth/pose x strength 0.7/1.0 match the diffusers (pytorch) reference
  • q8_0 GGUF conversion verified: gray correlation 0.996 vs bf16 output, -47% size/VRAM

Tip: for some tasks need manual changing control-stregth (anime is lower than 0.7, about 0.5)

Known issue (VAE tiling):

  • --vae-tiling degrades z-image + ControlNet results at 1024px: the tiled VAE encode of the control image leaves boundary artifacts that the control net + 8-step flow model amplify (verified by flag isolation; 512px unaffected due to stronger tile overlap). Keep --vae-tiling off for z-image+CN runs; the final decode can stay tiled.
  • sometimes on depth map getting bad results, but on the pytorch same, so it's not code implementation problem. may be mine depth map obtained different with authors way.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added ControlNet support for Z-Image, allowing control images to guide generation with adjustable strength.
    • Z-Image control images are prepared when a compatible control model is available; otherwise, they are ignored with a warning.
    • Control images are adjusted for high-resolution generation when needed.
    • Existing control-image handling for other models remains unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds optional ControlNet conditioning to Z-Image. It detects and loads control weights, encodes control images as 33-channel latents, and passes them through refiner and transformer paths. The pipeline registers control parameters and supplies control data during sampling.

Changes: Z-Image Control Conditioning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Control model contract and construction
src/model/diffusion/model.hpp, src/model/diffusion/z_image.hpp
The diffusion parameters accept Z-Image control latents and strength. The model detects control weights, constructs control blocks, and collects their parameters.
Control-conditioned forward path
src/model/diffusion/z_image.hpp
The model validates control-latent dimensions and compatibility with reference latents. It processes control through refiner and main-layer paths, then adds generated hints to image states.
Runner graph and compute propagation
src/model/diffusion/z_image.hpp
The runner exposes control status and parameters. It passes optional control latents and strength through graph construction and compute to the model.
Control image encoding and hires preparation
src/pipeline/image.cpp
The pipeline encodes Z-Image control images as 33-channel latents. For hires generation, it prepares a control latent at the hires dimensions.
Control registration and sampling integration
src/pipeline/diffusion_engine.cpp, src/pipeline/model_builders.cpp, src/stable-diffusion.cpp
The pipeline registers Z-Image control parameters, coordinates runner resets, passes control data during sampling, and detects registered control parameters.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8cedc

The control path is mergeable; the inspected concerns do not show a current functional regression.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 98931

The new conditioning path checks tensor dimensions, but an incompatible combination of generation inputs is rejected inside inference by an assertion rather than a recoverable request error. This creates a potential availability risk for applications accepting externally supplied generation requests; network reachability remains unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new control path enforces incompatibility with reference latents through GGML_ASSERT(ref_latents.empty()). The runner accepts both inputs, and the image pipeline prepares control and reference inputs independently. If both reach graph construction, an unsupported request combination can become a host-process failure instead of a recoverable request rejection. External-service reachability and whether earlier conditioning rejects the combination remain unresolved.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified failure-containment concern is bounded to applications forwarding both conditioning inputs into an enabled runner. A fatal assertion could affect other work sharing that process. Remote access requirements, deployment isolation, and cross-tenant exposure were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller can supply control and reference conditioning through the runner interface. With control enabled and otherwise valid tensors, retaining reference latents violates the newly added assertion. The assertion condition is source-supported, but a complete network-request exploit path and process-termination behavior were not verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Model construction derives control blocks from configured tensor storage, while request images and strength enter the inference data path. Control parameters remain registered through the existing manager and diffusion backends; the examined path does not delegate parameter construction to image contents.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Coupled refresh and unregister-before-destruction address stale borrowed control-tensor ownership during successful updates. Rebuild failure clears runners instead of leaving a mixed old/new graph, although recovery requires another successful rebuild.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce conditioning-mode compatibility at the recoverable request and runner boundaries before constructing the graph, while retaining internal assertions as invariant checks.

Explanation

The title "feat: add control-net z-image" matches the main change. The PR adds ControlNet (Union) support for Z-Image-Turbo. The raw summary confirms control-model detection, control blocks, control latent encoding, and pipeline wiring for Z-Image. The title is short and specific. It uses the conventional "feat:" prefix and names the feature and model.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections: Summary, Related Issue / Discussion, Additional Information, and Checklist. The Summary explains the change, its CLI and server interface, and the weight sources. It also links related issues. Additional Information lists test results and a known VAE tiling issue. The checklist is marked complete. Minor gaps: the Summary does not give a separate rationale for the design choices, and the description contains a typo ("control-stregth"). Neither gap affects the template compliance.

Use the hinted refiner output for the base image sequence.

When control is enabled, the unhinted refiner loop assigns img, and txt_img is built from that tensor. img_c receives the refiner hints but is passed only to forward_control_main. The hints can affect the base layers indirectly through main_hints, but they do not replace the base refiner output. Skip the unhinted loop when control is active and assign img = img_c.

Overall this looks good, but I think a few integration cases need fixing before merging:

  • Hires fix: The second sampling pass reuses latents.control_image at the original resolution. Once the image latent is upscaled, the new dimension check in ZImageModel::forward() will abort. We need to prepare the control latent at the hires resolution too.
  • TAE encoding: The unconditional chunk(vae_output, 2, 2)[0] assumes the encoder returns mean/logvar. TAE already returns the latent directly, so this drops half its channels and silently pads the rest with zeros.
  • ControlNet status: sd_ctx_has_control_net() still checks control_net != nullptr. Since this implementation keeps the control weights inside the Z-Image runner, that API returns false even after a successful load.

  • Hires fix — re-encode control latent at upscaled resolution (otherwise dimension check aborts).
  • TAE — skip chunk(...,2)[0] for taesd (it returns latent directly; old code dropped half the channels).
  • sd_ctx_has_control_net() — return true for Z-Image’s in-runner control weights, not just control_net != nullptr.

Verified on Z-Image-Turbo with and w/o CN.
