Summary

sd-server accepted --taesd but always used the TAE as the final encoder/decoder, because the preview-only flag existed only in sd-cli's local params and the server hardcoded tae_preview_only = false in both of its context-build paths.
Loading a TAE therefore silently degraded every output image, with the real VAE never loaded.

This PR moves the flag into SDContextParams so the shared option table exposes --taesd-preview-only to both binaries, and to_sd_ctx_params_t() reads the member instead of taking it as a parameter.
Behavior without the flag is unchanged (TAE replaces the VAE, as before).
Recipe-based model loads and model switching inherit the flag through the base context.
docs/taesd.md notes the server usage.

Related Issue / Discussion

None found - no open or closed issue tracks this (searched taesd_preview, tae_preview_only, server TAE preview).
Discovered while investigating why TAE previews could not be enabled on sd-server without degrading output quality.

Additional Information

Verification on a 7900XTX (both backends, ROCm 10.1 + Vulkan):

  • With --taesd X --taesd-preview-only, the server now logs using VAE for encoding / decoding and using TAE for preview (previously: using TAE for encoding / decoding, VAE weights skipped).
  • Byte-identical finals: fixed seed, same prompt and size, generated without --taesd vs. with --taesd --taesd-preview-only - outputs are bit exact, confirming previews never affect the denoising path.
  • --help lists the flag on sd-server (ROCm and Vulkan) and sd-cli.
  • Without the flag, behavior is unchanged: TAE still replaces the VAE for encoding/decoding, matching previous releases.
  • WebUI: the Preview Mode dropdown offers tae once a TAE is loaded, live previews render during generation, and final images keep full VAE quality.
On the server the preview method is selected per request (WebUI dropdown / preview API field) instead of the CLI's
    --preview argument.

LLM Disclosure: I have used GLM-5.3-flash to help along.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added --taesd-preview-only support for sd-server, allowing TAESD to generate step previews while the VAE performs final image decoding.
    • Preview selection is now configured per request rather than through the global --preview option.
  • Documentation

    • Documented the new TAESD server options and preview behavior.

Move the preview-only TAE flag from the CLI's local params into
SDContextParams so both sd-cli and sd-server accept it. On sd-server,
--taesd previously always replaced the VAE for final encoding and
decoding, so loading a TAE silently degraded every output image; with
the flag, the VAE keeps encoding/decoding the final image while the
TAE is only used for step previews. Recipe-based model loads inherit
the flag through the base context.

📝 Walkthrough

The TAESD preview-only setting moves into shared context parameters. The CLI removes its separate preview flag, and CLI and server callers use the updated context conversion method. Documentation describes the server options and per-request preview selection.

Changes: TAESD preview-only setting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared context setting

SDContextParams adds taesd_preview_only. The common option parser and context conversion use this field.
CLI and server caller updates

Suggested reviewers: leejet

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7df77

The new option does not provide its documented behavior for two supported SDXS variants.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7df77

The server gains an operator-selected preview option without expanding remote-client permissions. The inspected loading and switching paths preserve configuration inheritance, file-selection restrictions, and failure recovery.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For the inspected paths, the changed effect is encoder/decoder selection within the server's active context. Remote model selection continues to use catalog-constrained files; the conversion change does not grant arbitrary filesystem-path selection or control over the preview-only setting.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Model-switch input remains subject to recipe-slot allowlists, catalog lookup, category checks, path canonicalization, and containment under configured model roots. Those checks and the model-path assignments are unchanged by the PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Model transitions retain the existing runtime-mutex admission check and pending-job rejection. The conversion change occurs inside the existing synchronous replacement and failure-cleanup block, without changing transition ordering or concurrent-switch admission.
