Summary

  • Add --flash-attn on|off|auto and per-module overrides, with auto as the default and a matching string-based C API option.
  • Select FA during context creation and cache decisions per backend. Enable supported CPU, CUDA/HIP MMA, and Vulkan NVIDIA RTX configurations directly; benchmark other configurations using reusable probe infrastructure.
  • Require all compute devices of a module to select FA before enabling it. Preserve existing model interfaces and honor explicit disabling during SageAttention fallback.
  • Deprecate --fa and --diffusion-fa while preserving compatibility, and remove them from documentation examples.

Related Issue / Discussion

Supersede #1186.

Checklist

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Flash Attention now supports on, off, and auto modes, with optional per-module settings. In auto mode, the app checks backend support and performance; multi-device models enable it only when all compute devices support it.
    • Existing --fa and --diffusion-fa options remain available as deprecated aliases.
  • Documentation
    • Updated CLI guidance and examples to describe Flash Attention modes, automatic selection, and current option usage.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a string-based flash-attention setting with module-specific assignments and automatic backend probing. It updates runtime selection, adds HIP capability checks, and revises documentation and examples to describe the new option and remove deprecated flags.

Changes: Flash Attention Selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Flash-attention configuration and parsing
include/stable-diffusion.h, examples/common/common.*, src/core/ggml_extend_backend.*, src/stable-diffusion.cpp
Context parameters and CLI handling now use flash_attn_mode. The parser validates mode strings and supported module assignments. Deprecated aliases set mode strings and issue warnings.
Backend probing and capability detection
src/core/probe/*, src/core/ggml_extend_backend.*, CMakeLists.txt, scripts/format-code.*
The probe runner builds, validates, and times reference and candidate graphs. Flash-attention probing uses backend capability checks or measured results. CMake adds probe sources and HIP support; formatting scripts include probe files.
Per-module runtime selection
src/pipeline/diffusion_engine.*, src/core/ggml_extend.cpp
The engine parses assignments, caches per-backend probe results, and applies module-specific settings. The attention fallback condition now requires flash attention when kqv is unset.
CLI documentation and example updates
docs/*.md, examples/cli/README.md, examples/server/README.md
Documentation describes mode selection and probing. Model examples remove deprecated attention flags; some examples also change other command arguments.

- Editing runs the reference and the target in one sequence, so it needs roughly twice the
tokens of text to image at the same size. On 12 GB, editing at 1024x1024 needs
`--diffusion-fa`; without it the diffusion graph does not fit.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Enable flash attention in the 12 GB edit example.

The note says 1024×1024 editing needs flash attention on 12 GB, but the edit command relies on default auto. The documented policy can select off when the probe is unsupported, fails, or does not meet the speed threshold. On those backends, the documented edit may not fit in memory. Add --flash-attn on to the edit command or qualify the 12 GB guidance. See docs/backend.md, Lines 257–269.
