  • Added std::string&&, std::vector<uint8_t>&& and Arduino String&& constructors.
  • Move assignment now leaves the source in a safe state: null buffer, with max length, length, capacity and timestamp cleared.
  • The move constructor still delegates to move assignment.

Bug fixes:

  • The buffer constructor in NimBLEAttValue.cpp now rejects a length above max_len, which is capped at 512. It logs an error and leaves the value empty, as append() does.
  • Container sizes are clamped to 65535 before being narrowed to uint16_t. Previously a 65536+ byte container could wrap to a small length and pass the check. This applies to the const char*, initializer-list, std::string, std::vector, Arduino String and rvalue constructors.

Behavior notes:

  • The rvalue overloads copy the bytes. They do not take over the source container's storage, and the source stays valid.
  • The by-value const std::string, const std::vector<uint8_t> and const String parameters are now const&, which avoids copies and ambiguity with the rvalue overloads. Those constructors now use .data() instead of &x[0], so empty containers are safe.
  • A moved-from NimBLEAttValue has a null buffer. It is safe to destroy or assign to.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Oversized attribute values are rejected, leaving the value empty rather than retaining an invalid length.
    • Failed allocations leave values empty with zero capacity, and empty or moved-from values remain in a valid state.
    • Received notification and write values are handled more reliably when buffer capacity or data availability differs from the received length.
  • New Features
    • Added constructors for temporary strings, byte vectors, and Arduino strings.
    • String and byte-vector inputs can be passed by reference; temporary standard strings and vectors are copied into the attribute value.

Walkthrough

Arr, NimBLEAttValue now clamps constructor input lengths and adds rvalue overloads. Empty and moved-from values use shared empty storage. Buffer allocation, move assignment, and value comparison handling have changed. Client and server GATT handlers now check buffer capacity or size.

Changes: NimBLEAttValue construction and GATT buffer handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Constructor length handling
src/NimBLEAttValue.h, src/NimBLEAttValue.cpp
Arr, constructors clamp input lengths before delegation. The value constructor leaves the value empty when input exceeds the effective maximum. Selected constructors take const references, and new rvalue overloads are added.
Shared empty storage and owned-buffer operations
src/NimBLEAttValue.h, src/NimBLEAttValue.cpp
Arr, empty and moved-from values point to a shared byte. Destruction, move assignment, deepCopy, and append handle owned storage. Move assignment resets the source length, capacity, and timestamp. setValue checks the length before comparing bytes.
GATT buffer checks
src/NimBLEClient.cpp, src/NimBLEServer.cpp
Arr, the notification handler checks whether capacity is below the payload length. The server write-buffer check returns an insufficient-resources error when buffer size differs from the requested length.

Major · Arr, check the stored length before memcmp in setValue. · NimBLEAttValue.cpp:159

src/NimBLEAttValue.cpp:159
Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Arr, check the stored length before memcmp in setValue.

setValue runs append, which can reject len and leave m_attr_len at 0. It then calls memcmp on len bytes of m_attr_value, even though that buffer may hold only one byte. Checking m_attr_len == len first stops the comparison when the append was rejected.

Suggested fix
-    return memcmp(m_attr_value, value, len) == 0 && m_attr_len == len;
+    return m_attr_len == len && memcmp(m_attr_value, value, len) == 0;

Arrr, do not claim that moved-from values are reusable.

operator=(const std::string&) calls setValue, which writes m_attr_value[0] before append can reallocate or reject the value. A moved-from object has a null buffer, so this can crash.

This null write predates the PR. The PR clears the source length and capacity, but it does not clear m_attr_max_len, and it does not introduce or worsen this dereference. Restore valid storage for moved-from objects, or restrict the reuse guarantee.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Arr, prevent writes to the shared empty byte.

setValue() writes to m_attr_value[0] even when it points to EMPTY_VALUE. If one thread reuses a moved-from value while another reads the c_str() of a different moved-from value, those accesses race. This is undefined behavior even though the written byte is zero. Avoid writing to the shared byte. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Arr, keep allocation failure visible for empty writes.

When calloc(1, 1) fails for an empty write, the constructor sets m_attr_value to &EMPTY_VALUE and m_attr_max_len to 0. data() then returns non-null, and size() returns 0. The check at src/NimBLEServer.cpp:787 passes, so the write is accepted. When the write callback returns success, NimBLECharacteristic::writeEvent() move-assigns the value into the characteristic at src/NimBLECharacteristic.cpp:441. The characteristic takes max_size() == 0. Every later nonempty write then fails the len > max_len check, even after memory recovers.

Before this change, the same failure set m_attr_value to nullptr, and the server check rejected the write.

Keep an explicit failure state that the server can check. Or build valid empty values without allocating, and keep their maximum length.

Arr, preserve the terminator when an empty value copies itself.

For an empty value, value.copyFrom(value.getValue()) reaches deepCopy with the source and destination aliased. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

realloc(ownedBuffer(), 1) allocates an uninitialized byte. After m_attr_value changes, the copy reads from that same byte. A later c_str() read can run past the allocation.

Return early from deepCopy when this == &source.

* EMPTY_VALUE: m_attr_value now always points to either a heap buffer the object owns or a shared static EMPTY_VALUE byte.
It is used for a moved-from source and for allocation failure.
* ownedBuffer(): a private helper returns the heap buffer, or nullptr when the pointer is EMPTY_VALUE.
The destructor, move assignment, deepCopy() and append() use it, so free and realloc never see the static byte.
*Pointer getters: data(), c_str(), begin() and end() never return null.
*Moved-from state: after a move, the source has length 0, capacity 0 and timestamp 0 and points at EMPTY_VALUE.
It keeps its max length, so it is safe to destroy, assign to or append to; it allocates on first append.
