fix(nodes): require opt-in before binding the LAN listener to all interfaces - #249
Conversation
Fixes existence-master#177: the LAN device listener now binds loopback unless the new nodes.lan_bind_all flag opts into all interfaces. Exposure is surfaced as a warning in `sentient doctor` (lan listener row) and the desktop Settings Advanced section, and lan_status reports bind_all.

Thanks @wanjinhao1, this is a clean change and the tests are good. I approved the CI run. There's one problem I need fixed before merge, plus a few smaller things.
1. Pairing a phone over Wi-Fi breaks (blocking). The Wi-Fi switch in Add a device (desktop/src/features/devices/AddDeviceDialog.tsx, setLan) only sets nodes.lan_enabled. With this PR the listener then binds 127.0.0.1, but the pairing QR and GET /api/nodes/lan still advertise the computer's network addresses (lan.ws_urls() / web_urls() use lan_ipv4s()). The phone scans a code for an address nothing is listening on, and pairing fails with no explanation. Since that switch is already the user's explicit "let devices on my Wi-Fi in", please:
- make the dialog's switch set
lan_bind_alltogether withlan_enabled(and clear both when it's turned off); - when the listener is on loopback only, report loopback URLs (or none) instead of network addresses, so a QR never points at an address that isn't listening.
2. Existing users. Anyone who already had Wi-Fi devices switched on would lose their phones after updating. Please treat a saved config that has lan_enabled: true and no lan_bind_all key as opted in, so the upgrade doesn't change their setup without telling them. A test would be nice.
3. Wording. Our UI rules are "device, not node" and no em-dashes.
- The
sentient doctorrow has an em-dash. - The Settings row shows
nodes.lan_bind_all. Something like "Devices on your network can reach Sentient. They still have to pair first." reads better.
4. Docs. Please add bind_all to GET /api/nodes/lan in docs/API.md (section around line 1465) and add a line to CHANGELOG.md.
Before merging, I'll pair a real phone over Wi-Fi against your branch.

…ses loopback URLs, legacy LAN configs opt in Address review items 1 and 2 on existence-master#249: the Add a device switch now sets and clears nodes.lan_enabled together with nodes.lan_bind_all, lan_status (and the QR pairing URLs built from it) only advertises 127.0.0.1 addresses while the listener is loopback-only, and configs saved before lan_bind_all existed keep treating lan_enabled=true as the 0.0.0.0 opt-in it used to be.

Hi @wanjinhao1, main had moved on and this branch conflicted, so I merged it in for you:

Thanks @wanjinhao1, both items work! I tested them on a real engine from your branch (merged with main):
- off by default;
- only loopback addresses while the listener is loopback-only;
- the Add a device switch moves it to all interfaces, with the LAN IP in the QR;
- a test device paired over the LAN IP, and turning the switch off clears both settings and refuses the device;
- an old
lan_enabled: trueconfig still binds all interfaces after updating.
I'm also about to pair a real phone over Wi-Fi against it.
Before merge:
- the two open CodeRabbit threads (
cli.py~223,nodes/service.py~278): only warn about network exposure once the listener has really started; - in
sentient doctor, the bind-all row shows a red "fail". PassingNonetorow()gives the yellow "warn" your changelog entry describes (cli.py~226).
Optional: "LAN listener" in Settings could read "Devices on your network". Then it's ready!

Real phone test done, @wanjinhao1 🎉 We ran a test copy of Sentient from your branch (merged with main) and paired a real Android phone over Wi-Fi:

Thanks @wanjinhao1, all three work, and the whole PR holds up on real hardware too:
sentient doctorshows a yellow warn when the listener is open to all interfaces, and a fail with the reason when the port is taken;- the "all interfaces" warning only appears once the listener has really started;
- a real Android phone paired over Wi-Fi and was cut off when the switch went off.
CI is green and every thread is resolved. Approving and merging. Thanks for sticking with this one!
What and why
The LAN device listener bound
0.0.0.0as soon asnodes.lan_enabledwas on, so a misconfigured setup exposed a listener to the whole network with no explicit opt-in. Fixes #177 (SAFE-15).nodes.lan_bind_allconfig flag (defaultFalse): the listener now binds loopback (127.0.0.1) unless the flag opts into0.0.0.0; switching the flag (or port/mDNS) restarts the listener on the right host.sentient doctorgains alan listenerrow (warn when bound to all interfaces),lan_status()reportsbind_all, and the desktop Settings → Advanced section shows a "Exposed to your network" warning row when the listener is on withlan_bind_all.log.warningfires when the listener binds all interfaces.How I tested it
