Summary

  • Add Framework.ExecCommandJSON in e2e/framework/exec.go: runs the devsy binary, returns decoded map[string]any; errors returned, not asserted.
  • Adopt it in 12 successful-path config-read specs in e2e/tests/configread/configread.go.

Why

Each converted spec repeated capture, error check, and json.Unmarshal with identical assertion wording. Expected-error specs and the no-metadata spec (tolerates failure via if err == nil) keep the raw capture path.

Fixes: none. Type: Refactor (no behavior change).

Validation

  • go vet ./e2e/..., go test ./e2e/framework/...: pass.
  • mise run cli:format: exit 0. mise run cli:lint:ci: 0 issues.
  • Dry-run before vs after: 503 specs, identical names and labels.
  • CI: Test config-read on ubuntu-latest passed on 0afc8781c, 19 Passed, 0 Failed: https://github.com/devsy-org/devsy/actions/runs/39443569516/job/118713830664. All CI green.
  • Live suite not run locally (no docker/binary here); coverage comes from the green integration job above.
  • mise run cli:test: not run by me.

coderabbit review --agent --committed --base-commit 9ea37f466 on 0afc8781c: completed, 0 findings. GitHub CodeRabbit left one MINOR null suggestion; coordinator disposition: keep current behavior, identical to prior json.Unmarshal path, and migrated callers reject null.

AI assistance

Yes. Tool: omp with Haiku 5.5, coordinated by the devsy coordinator agent. Used for implementation and test-run verification. Share: agent-generated edits, coordinator-reviewed.

Auto-merge

Eligible: yes, subject to gates. Counts: +16 non-test source lines (exec.go); spec lines +12/-60 (configread.go, half weight 36); weighted total 52; 2 files.

Coordinator owns ready-for-review and merge. CLA signature: not verified by worker.

📝 Walkthrough

The framework adds ExecCommandJSON to run commands and decode their JSON output. Config-read E2E tests use this helper instead of manually capturing and decoding stdout.

Changes: E2E JSON command output

Layer / File(s) Summary
JSON command helper
e2e/framework/exec.go
Adds ExecCommandJSON, which runs a command, includes stderr in command errors, and returns decoded JSON or a decoding error.
Config-read test adoption
e2e/tests/configread/configread.go
Replaces manual stdout capture and JSON decoding with ExecCommandJSON across config-read scenarios.

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0afc8

Reject null output in the helper so malformed configuration results fail clearly at the command boundary.

The description is mostly complete. It explains the change and reason, states that no issue applies, identifies the refactor type, documents AI assistance, lists validation results, records the integration test status, and notes that the CLA was not verified. It does not reproduce every template checkbox or the optional reviewer notes section, but the required information is present.

json.Unmarshal succeeds, returning an error indicating the output must be a JSON
object; preserve the existing valid-JSON error handling and successful return
for non-nil maps.
