Summary

Fact-check of developing-in-workspaces/prebuild-a-workspace.mdx against Go code. Corrects three statements; commands and flags were already accurate.

  • Hash inputs: the prebuild hash covers target architecture, build-relevant devcontainer config (name, features, image, Dockerfile/build settings), Dockerfile contents, and build context (minus .dockerignore). Page said only "the devcontainer configuration".
  • Push vs. lookup failure: a missing prebuild or unreadable repo falls back to building. A push permission failure during workspace build fails the build with cannot push to repository. Page implied credentials failures are always skipped.
  • prebuildRepository accepts a string or array; all entries are checked on lookup, first entry receives pushes.
  • Removed unverifiable claims ("remote or dedicated provider", "suits builds run from CI").

Why

Verified against pkg/devcontainer/config/prebuild.go, pkg/devcontainer/build.go (findPrebuildImage, r.build), pkg/devcontainer/prebuild.go (pushPrebuildImage), pkg/image/image.go, and go run . workspace build --help / workspace up --help (flags --repository, --prebuild-repo).

Validation

  • npm ci in sites/docs-devsy-sh (262 packages)
  • npm run build: passed, 112 static pages
  • npm run check-links: 0 errored files, 0 errors

Human review of the technical claims. Remaining candidates in the priority list (workspace-snapshots, credentials, dotfiles-in-a-workspace, connect-to-a-workspace) were not reviewed because this page had real defects.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how matching prebuilds are selected and reused, including hash inputs, image tags, and when builds are skipped or fall back to a normal build.
    • Documented support for checking multiple prebuild repositories and publishing to the first configured repository.
    • Explained outcomes for lookup failures, missing credentials, push permissions, and image inspection failures.

…haviour

Prebuild hash covers arch, build-relevant config, Dockerfile, and context (not just config). Push failures fail the build; lookup failures fall back to building. prebuildRepository accepts string or array.

📝 Walkthrough

The prebuild guide now describes hash inputs and tags, lookup across configured repositories, build and push behavior, and outcomes when lookup, image inspection, or push permissions fail.

Changes: Prebuild documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prebuild lookup and build behavior
sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-in-workspaces/prebuild-a-workspace.mdx
The guide specifies prebuild hash inputs and tags, and explains lookup across configured repositories. It documents when Devsy skips a build, builds and pushes, reports a push-permission error, continues after a repository lookup failure, falls back to a regular build, or fails because an image cannot be inspected.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a18ca

The guide may mislead users about which files affect prebuild matching and where an image is pushed when --repository is set. Clarifying both would reduce configuration surprises; the implementation behavior itself is unaffected.

Lookup errors continue to the next repository; a found image that cannot be inspected fails the build.

🟡 Minor · Clarify which ignore file contributes to the prebuild hash. · prebuild-a-workspace.mdx:10

sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-in-workspaces/prebuild-a-workspace.mdx:10
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clarify which ignore file contributes to the prebuild hash.

The hash uses the Dockerfile-specific ignore file when it exists, and otherwise uses .dockerignore. The implementation also re-includes the Dockerfile and the selected ignore file when an ignore pattern would exclude them. The current sentence therefore omits hash inputs and incorrectly implies that every matched file is excluded.

Suggested fix
-Devsy computes a prebuild hash from the target architecture, the build-relevant parts of `devcontainer.json` (name, features, image, Dockerfile and build settings), the Dockerfile contents, and the build context, excluding files matched by `.dockerignore`. The image tag is `devsy-` followed by 32 hex characters. Devsy looks for that tag in each prebuild repository and uses the image if found.

Document --repository precedence.

When workspace build --repository <repo> runs with prebuildRepository configured, Devsy pushes to <repo>, not to the first configured entry. Update the sentence to describe this condition.
