Published MicroSandbox providers need direct evidence that they consume registry trust, credentials and proxy settings, alongside comparable startup measurements. This adds three isolated Linux cases through the production external Host.RunImage path: authenticated TLS through an owned CONNECT proxy, refusal without the fixture CA, and refusal without credentials. The positive case verifies authenticated image response bytes and a guest marker; negative controls require concrete refusal and no created VM. Credential-helper receipts identify the live provider executable without recording credentials.

The existing lifecycle case captures ordinary fresh/reused up timings and a direct/supervised Info/Find comparison using checksum-verified provider bytes and SDK tools built from the exact unreplaced module pin. Reports preserve revision, SDK/runtime/tool identity, process reaping and startup-event boundaries. They describe warm caches and impose no latency threshold.

The shared Go CI helper owns the external-only report mode and SDK tool build. The catalogue grows from 13 suites/74 cases to 14 suites/77 cases (37 built-in, 40 external); the existing parity contracts, caching, deadlines and dynamic Windows conformance gate remain intact. Fixture/performance unit tests run by package, and TestMain preserves runtime-supervisor dispatch before private credential-helper dispatch.

Local validation passed: helper and workspace-fixture race tests, Linux registry/credential-helper unit execution, Linux E2E compilation/vet, Windows helper compilation, module verification, strict Linux lint and scoped hooks. The five-case lifecycle/consumer selection check was a dry run only. Local CodeRabbit remains temporarily waived by the user while its service cannot start; no local review coverage is claimed.

Current-head native reports now prove all 77 cases passed once (37 built-in, 40 external), and the retained performance JSON proves fresh/reused up capture plus 808 reaped Info/Find launches with checkout, SDK, runtime and supervisor identity verified. Windows dynamic conformance passed all 42 discovered roots and 84 observed tests/subtests, with both helper unit packages passing. The original Compose job failed before its UID assertion because Ubuntu security package downloads returned 404; one evidence-supported targeted retry passed the UID check and all 55 Compose cases. All 86 current implementation CI jobs are now successful; no further retry is needed. The image-site Netlify retry is ready for this exact head, and all applicable external checks now pass or have expected conditional neutral/skipped status. Greptile reviewed this exact head with confidence 5/5 and no actionable findings. CodeRabbit completed a full exact-head review of all 23 changed files with no significant valid findings; retained security/architecture and minor advisory notes were independently dispositioned. The workflow scanner’s YAML source-location failure was reproduced, and a semantically identical temporary representation produced exactly the same 30 findings as main. This does not claim the original scanner passed. Interrupted published-provider RunImage cleanup remains a documented hardening coverage limit, with no introduced defect established here. Direct RunImage consumption does not prove ordinary up image metadata resolution, remote-agent downloads, cold-cache performance or general egress denial. External-provider cutover remains gated on the remaining campaign work.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds a Linux external-provider registry-consumer suite, provider-mode report validation, and optional performance capture for the MicroSandbox lifecycle. CI builds performance tools, configures the new suite cases, and uploads performance reports.

Changes: External registry-consumer suite

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider-mode suite validation
hack/microsandbox/*, .github/workflows/pr-ci.yml, e2e/tests/up/MICROSANDBOX.md, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-providers/runtime-protocol.mdx
The suite runner and report validator accept parity or external mode. The external registry-consumer matrix case expects three external-provider specs. Documentation describes the provider modes and case catalogue.
Owned TLS registry and CONNECT proxy
e2e/framework/registryfixture/server_linux.go, e2e/framework/registryfixture/server_linux_test.go, .github/workflows/pr-ci.yml
The Linux fixture handles authenticated registry requests through a TLS server and authority-limited CONNECT proxy. It records request and response details and tests request handling, digests, and shutdown.
Private credential-helper dispatch
e2e/framework/registryfixture/credential_linux.go, e2e/framework/registryfixture/server_linux_test.go, e2e/framework/registryfixture/testmain_linux_test.go, e2e/credential_helper_*_test.go, e2e/e2e_suite_test.go
The helper validates private files and parent identity, returns credentials when checks pass, and logs secret-free observations. Test binaries dispatch helper invocations while preserving normal test execution.
Published-provider image-consumer cases
e2e/tests/up/provider_microsandbox_consumer_linux.go, e2e/tests/up/MICROSANDBOX.md, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-providers/runtime-protocol.mdx
The Linux suite tests authenticated image consumption, untrusted TLS refusal, and missing-credential refusal. It verifies registry activity, image contents, workspace outcomes, and credential receipts.

External-provider performance capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pinned performance-tool build
hack/microsandbox/main.go, hack/microsandbox/performance_tools.go, hack/microsandbox/performance_tools_test.go, .github/workflows/pr-ci.yml
A Linux command resolves the runtime SDK version and installs the probe and supervisor tools at that version. CI builds and uploads the tools for the lifecycle job.
Lifecycle capture and runtime probes
e2e/tests/up/provider_microsandbox_performance.go, e2e/tests/up/provider_microsandbox_performance_test.go, e2e/tests/up/provider_microsandbox.go
The external-provider lifecycle records fresh and reused startup measurements, then runs ordered direct and supervised Info and Find probes. The report validation checks runtime identity, samples, and process-reaping results.
CI capture wiring and artifact handling
hack/microsandbox/run.go, hack/microsandbox/run_test.go, .github/workflows/pr-ci.yml, e2e/tests/up/MICROSANDBOX.md, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-providers/runtime-protocol.mdx
CI passes tool paths and capture metadata to the lifecycle suite and uploads the resulting JSON. The runner forwards performance inputs and adjusts artifact ownership. Documentation describes the capture inputs and measurements.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c60fc

This change adds test-only external-provider registry coverage and optional startup measurements in CI. It does not change production behavior. The one open note is a suggested clarifying code comment about the scope of tool-build provenance, so the change is low risk to merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c60fc

The new network and credential paths are confined to isolated test runs, with restricted destinations and pinned measurement dependencies. No introduced security defect was established. Execution against the published provider and cleanup after interruption remain incompletely demonstrated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added execution paths operate with CI-host authority because the native suite runs through sudo. The new network forwarding destination is nevertheless confined to the fixture-owned registry, and its credentials are fixture values. The evidence supports a local test-host scope, not a demonstrated production tenant or service exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled CONNECT authorities cannot choose the upstream destination: the proxy requires the exact owned authority, then dials the registry listener address rather than resolving request input. Registry access additionally requires TLS and matching Basic credentials. A unit test explicitly exercises and rejects an alternate destination.
  • observed — Helper configuration and receipt files must be direct children of a canonical, current-user-owned mode-0700 root and mode-0600 regular files. Opens reject final symlinks; receipt creation handles concurrent creators and serializes appends with a file lock. Dispatch also requires the fixed private helper path to resolve to the running test executable.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Fixture shutdown is idempotent, fences new work, closes tracked tunnels, and waits for active work within its context. Consumer cleanup uses bounded contexts detached from test cancellation. These are concrete containment controls; the available assertions still do not prove published-provider VM cleanup under interrupted RunImage execution.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] This PR appears safe to merge within its stated test and measurement scope.

Summary

Adds three Linux cases that exercise the published MicroSandbox provider through Host.RunImage.

  • The published provider now has Linux cases for trusted image access and refusal.
  • The external provider's lifecycle run now captures startup timings and launch comparisons.
  • The shared CI helper now validates external-only reports and builds pinned SDK tools.

No actionable issues were found.

Scope limits explicitly acknowledged by skevetter: these cases do not prove ordinary up image metadata lookup, remote-agent downloads, cold-cache performance, or general egress denial. Those remain outside this PR’s stated coverage.

go install module@version ignores the main module, so the go list pin check does not cover the installed dependency graph.

go list -m runs in the repository module and resolves the pinned version there. go install pkg@version then builds in module-aware mode outside the main module. In that mode, the build uses the SDK's own go.mod for transitive dependencies. It does not use the repository's go.mod or go.sum. As a result, the SDK version matches the pin, but the dependency set can differ from the repository's resolution. This does not break the build. It matches the PR claim that the tools come "from the exact unreplaced module pin". The behavior is still worth a short comment in the code, so nobody later reads the check as dependency-level provenance.

Final review disposition for c60fcbf:

  • Greptile completed with 5/5 and no actionable findings. CodeRabbit completed full review 5520313600, run 47d4d558-3543-412d-ba34-6280538ba329, with all 23 changed files covered, no inline findings, minimal merge risk and low security architecture risk. Its final check is successful. The complete retained reviews were inspected.
  • Published-provider execution is established by the current-head native reports: all 77 cases passed once, including the three external-only registry consumers against published 0.1.8. Runtime bytes match the published manifest, and the performance artifact records the tested checkout/SDK/runtime/supervisor identities and 808 reaped probe launches. These are warm observations, not cold-cache or speedup claims.
  • Interrupted RunImage cleanup remains a coverage limitation, not a demonstrated defect introduced here. These consumers prove successful execution and concrete TLS/auth refusal with bounded independent cleanup. Existing lost-reply tests prove recovery of a persisted create effect at a test-plugin boundary; native logs-cancellation cases cover Exec. Neither establishes interrupted published-provider RunImage semantics. The remaining hardening work must preserve this distinction and inspect recoverable owned effects rather than promise automatic rollback. The external-provider transition remains gated on the remaining campaign work.
  • The SDK tool-build comment suggestion is intentionally no-action: go list -m selects the exact unreplaced SDK version, and version-suffixed go install builds that SDK using its own dependency graph. This is the documented exact SDK pin claim; it is not a claim that the tools use the Devsy repository's transitive module graph. Go's own install help confirms that version-suffixed installation ignores the surrounding go.mod. No build defect was identified.
  • The docstring percentage is an advisory heuristic over predominantly private test/helper functions. Bulk boilerplate comments would conflict with the project's self-documenting-code preference. No missing public contract or significant correctness issue was identified.
  • CodeRabbit's embedded zizmor 1.30.1 audit failed before auditing because its raw-source locator mishandles doubled single quotes in a single-quoted YAML run value. I reproduced the exact fatal locally. A temporary block-scalar representation was verified with yaml.v3 to have identical decoded node kinds/tags/values/anchors/structure; only presentation differs. The same offline scanner then completed on both that equivalent workflow and actual main c4e684c. Both report exactly the same 30 findings with identical rule, severity/confidence, semantic location and annotation: 11 checkout credential-persistence, 12 default-permission, four informational template, one existing build-cache and two existing GitHub-App findings. No new finding or token/permission boundary was introduced. The original scanner invocation remains failed; this is a reproduced parser limitation plus a semantic-equivalent supplemental audit, not a claim that the original scanner passed. No repository source, scanner suppression or settings were changed. Existing workflow/security-policy hardening is separately scoped; caching remains enabled as requested.

All 86 implementation CI jobs, dynamic Windows coverage (42 roots/84 observed IDs), both Windows helper packages, applicable external checks and current signatures passed. Local CodeRabbit remains explicitly temporarily waived by the user while its service is unavailable; no local review coverage is claimed.
