fix(command): stop darwin EPERM on zombie-only process groups - #1482
Conversation
Darwin kill(-pgid, sig) returns EPERM for a zombie-only group, but the matcher counted a zombie leader as a live member. Treat zombies as non-members, match a zombie leader by start time only, and add processIsLive and processGroupHasLivingMembers helpers for all unix platforms.
Suppress EPERM from a negative-PGID signal only when the saved identity matches no live member. Live or unverifiable groups keep the error. Check leader liveness before reading identity so an exited, unreaped leader is treated as gone, and replace kill(-pgid, 0) group probing with a living-member scan.
Wait for a readiness file before terminating the SIGTERM-ignoring group, assert on living members instead of kernel group existence, and add regression tests for zombie-only groups, stale identities, and EPERM classification.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; all three previous findings are addressed. SummaryThe PR stops macOS cleanup from treating zombie-only process groups as live.
All three previous findings are addressed. No new actionable issues were found.

…veness Skip unreadable non-leader /proc entries in processGroupHasLivingMembers and confirm group absence with a single kill(-pgid, 0) probe, reusing the existing unreadable-entry policy. An unreadable leader, failed listing, or a group that may still exist keeps failing closed. Reject nonpositive PGIDs.
sendProcessSignal now reports signalSent or targetGone so signalProcessTree returns immediately on ESRCH or a confirmed zombie-only group instead of sleeping through the grace period. EPERM handling is unchanged and still limited to identity-confirmed negative targets.
Gate the leader on stdin so identity capture and child readiness are deterministic, leave the leader unreaped, and assert the group stays matched and the child is terminated. Add a stale-identity case and stop pinning the exact kernel errno in the zombie-only test.

A reaped PID can be reused, which would signal an unrelated process and trip the grace wait. Use a PID that cannot name a live process.

Root cause
On darwin,
kill(-pgid, sig)returnsEPERMfor a group whose only member is a zombie. The darwin identity matcher counted an exited, unreaped leader as a live member, so the kill path signaled the group and surfacedEPERM. Confirmed on macOS 25.6 arm64: zombie leader reportsP_stat=5,GetsidreturnsESRCH, andkill(-pgid, 0|TERM|KILL)returnsEPERM. The exact CI interleaving is inferred; the probe did not reproduce the timing.Changes
process_identity_darwin.go: zombies are never group members; a zombie leader is matched by start time only (no session lookup is possible); addprocessIsLiveandprocessGroupHasLivingMembers.process_identity_linux.go/process_identity_unix.go: same helpers; unsupported platforms fail closed.process_supported.go:EPERMfrom a negative-PGID signal is suppressed only when the saved identity matches no live member (confirmGroupEPERM).
