Fixes #1469.

On Windows with Docker Engine in WSL reached over SSH, workspace image builds could use the local named pipe even though Docker preflight and inspection reached the configured daemon. Internal BuildKit now connects through the provider-selected Docker CLI and its environment using docker system dial-stdio.

  • The transport implements deadlines, half-close, cancellation of pending hijacks, bounded diagnostics, and process-tree ownership. Each I/O pump closes its owned OS pipe after I/O finishes. Shutdown closes caller-facing pipes first, reaches its existing process-kill deadline without waiting on synchronous Windows pipe Close, and joins the pumps before reporting successful completion. Regressions verify all three descriptors are closed on normal exit, failure, and forced shutdown. Linux/macOS retain a private session identity so remaining descendants are cleaned up after Docker exits. Darwin identity capture also handles a session leader that exits before it can be reaped.
  • Diagnostic redaction matches longer credentials first and replaces them in one pass, preserving short environment and URL passwords without recursively expanding the mask marker.
  • The SDK honors DOCKER_API_VERSION from the same invocation snapshot, including provider overrides and explicit clearing. Later process-environment changes do not affect the captured API pin.
  • Elevated Docker rejects provider daemon overrides it cannot honor; Podman and nerdctl retain their existing client path.
  • An early Windows transport job runs native transport/launcher and CI-helper unit tests independently of CLI artifact builds. A dedicated reusable workflow then runs six BuildKit regression specs, including production-driver builds against Docker Engine in WSL over SSH using a pinned Windows Docker CLI. The Go helper owns provisioning, diagnostics, and cleanup; Ginkgo runs directly, and a small Go report check rejects missing, skipped, retried, dry-run, or focused coverage.
  • The WSL provisioner records installer-daemon cleanup intent before installing packages and retains failed cleanup state for retry. Preflight refuses a pre-existing Docker daemon even when it uses another socket.
  • Both Windows jobs are required by CI Success, and the reusable workflow is included in the Go path filter. The shared integration matrix no longer contains WSL-specific branches or helper artifacts for unused platforms. Diagnostics upload follows teardown so cleanup failures are captured.

Validation:

  • Local race tests passed for the Docker transport, Docker driver, agent delivery, and CI helper packages; Windows transport test cross-compilation passed.
  • API-version regression coverage verifies process pins, provider pins, provider-cleared pins, and normal negotiation; the pinned cases failed before the fix and pass afterward.
  • A local PowerShell/native-argv probe reproduces dotted-flag splitting and verifies that the quoted workflow arguments arrive intact.
  • The stderr regression failed in all three cases before the fix and passes afterward.
  • The report checker accepts the prior real Windows Ginkgo report and has focused rejection tests.
  • The prior Ubuntu failure came from an existing agent-delivery cancellation test. It did not reproduce in 40 Linux arm64 runs, 40 Linux arm64 race runs, or 20 macOS race runs. The test now reports an early delivery error instead of hiding it behind a cancellation-observation timeout; production timeout behavior is unchanged.
  • Both cleanup regressions failed before the fixes and pass afterward. Linux transport and PID-reuse guard race tests passed, as did 20 macOS parent-exit/forced-shutdown race repetitions and a native Docker CLI ping/close smoke test.
  • Deterministic Darwin tests cover identity lookup after child exit and the exit transition without mutable session/group metadata. The regression cases fail before the fixes; the revised capture passes 100 race repetitions, as do 100 transport fast-exit repetitions. Full macOS and Linux command/transport race suites pass; Linux container tests run with an init reaper.
  • CI-parity lint passed with 0 issues; pre-commit, workflow lint, formatting, and secret scanning passed.
  • Local CodeRabbit follow-up reviews completed with no findings. The leak regression uses a second File.Close to verify that the owned descriptor was already closed on Unix and Windows. Windows cross-compilation includes a bounded liveness regression for a process terminated with exit code 259 while its handles remain open. The overlap and recursive-marker regressions failed before the fix and pass afterward; short environment and proxy URL credentials remain masked. A deterministic synchronous-pipe regression failed before the shutdown fix and passes afterward. Twenty shutdown race repetitions, full macOS/Linux transport race suites, the Docker driver race suite, and Windows cross-compilation passed. The descriptor regression also enforces bounded Close. Native Windows race tests passed on head a77f38f07: the previously 61-second forced-close case and the deterministic blocked-read case each completed in 0.17 seconds; all three pipe descriptors were already closed. All 90 primary CI jobs passed on a77f38f07, including CI Success. The Windows/WSL report has exactly six selected specs, all passed on attempt 1, with no dry run or programmatic focus; teardown and diagnostics upload passed. All applicable external checks passed. Greptile reviewed this head at 5/5. CodeRabbit completed a full review of all 62 changed files with no new actionable comments and low merge risk. The retained short-value masking tradeoff, scope/docstring warnings, and auxiliary zizmor parser limitation are documented in the review dispositions. All nine review threads are resolved, and all 49 commit identities and signatures are verified. This PR remains draft for human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds Docker invocation-based client selection and a stdio transport for Docker CLI connections. It also adds a Windows CI helper that provisions Docker in WSL2, runs BuildKit regression tests, validates their report, and cleans up the fixture.

Changes: Docker BuildKit daemon selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
CI helper runtime and report validation
e2e/framework/runenv/*, e2e/framework/runenv/runenvtest/*, e2e/cmd/devsy-ci/*
The runenv packages add injectable execution dependencies, subprocess handling, error classification, redaction, file operations, and GitHub Actions environment and PATH updates. The devsy-ci command registers Docker WSL and report subcommands. Report validation requires the requested labeled specs to pass on their first attempt.
WSL fixture setup and teardown
e2e/framework/dockerwsl/*
The docker-wsl command provisions Docker Engine and SSH in WSL2. It persists and validates owned-resource state, verifies the SSH endpoint and daemon identity, exports Docker settings, and provides ordered cleanup with retryable teardown records. CLI download, scripts, probes, diagnostics, and tests support this flow.
Docker invocation and stdio transport
pkg/docker/*, pkg/command/process_identity_darwin.go, pkg/command/session_identity_other.go, pkg/command/session_identity_darwin_test.go
Docker invocation snapshots provider and process environment values. The Docker SDK can use a stdio transport backed by docker system dial-stdio; transport shutdown reaps child processes and closes connections. Unix session identity support and platform-specific launchers support process cleanup.
BuildKit client selection and E2E coverage
pkg/driver/docker/build.go, pkg/driver/docker/build_test.go, e2e/tests/dockerbuildkit/*, e2e/e2e_suite_test.go
The internal BuildKit strategy selects the provider invocation for Docker, while elevated Docker rejects differing provider daemon selectors. Windows E2E tests cover SSH and Docker context selection and check that builds do not fall back to the process daemon.
Windows CI workflow and integration
.github/workflows/docker-buildkit-windows.yml, .github/workflows/pr-ci.yml, e2e/README.md
The reusable workflow provisions WSL2 Docker, runs six BuildKit specs, checks the Ginkgo report, then cleans up and uploads diagnostics. PR CI adds Windows transport tests and includes their results in CI success checks. The E2E README documents the job and report requirements.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a77f3

The change routes internal BuildKit through the provider-selected Docker daemon and adds Windows CI coverage. One minor diagnostic issue remains: error messages for failed Docker connections may become hard to read when short values are redacted. The PR is otherwise mergeable with owner awareness of this issue.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a77f3

Builds now follow the configured Docker connection, with explicit authentication and cleanup for the new Windows CI environment. No new exploitable boundary failure was established in the reviewed paths. Some diagnostic and cleanup guarantees remain dependent on operating conditions.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Production authority follows the selected provider executable, inherited environment, and configured Docker daemon rather than a newly introduced service identity. In CI, possession of the fixture key grants SSH access to an account in the Docker group, which is root-equivalent within the WSL environment. Exposure therefore includes that environment and data accessible to its daemon, not merely the test containers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The transport continues the existing trusted-provider executable boundary rather than interpreting provider values as shell text. It explicitly refuses privilege elevation, and the driver prevents unsupported elevated daemon overrides from falling back to a different daemon.
  • observed — Error diagnostics retain a bounded stderr tail and redact matching secret-bearing environment values and URL passwords, longest first in a single replacement pass. This is a heuristic control, not comprehensive handling of arbitrary structured credentials.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The supplied hosted workflow limits the practical concurrency concern by invoking setup and teardown sequentially. The helper's load-then-save initialization is not an interprocess ownership lock, so simultaneous invocation against shared SSH configuration or WSL resources is not a demonstrated safe operating mode.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before reusing the fixture on shared or persistent workers, enforce exclusive ownership across setup and cleanup, covering the shared SSH configuration and fixed WSL resources rather than only the state-file path.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[High impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues remain.

Summary

Internal BuildKit now reaches the provider-selected Docker daemon through docker system dial-stdio.

  • Internal Docker BuildKit connects through the provider’s selected Docker CLI.
  • Windows regression tests can build against Docker in WSL over SSH.
  • Windows CI checks BuildKit against Docker in WSL over SSH.

Previous threads were rechecked. The startup/shutdown race, Windows child ownership, ACL retry, Unix descendant cleanup, and installer-daemon cleanup are addressed. Ginkgo now runs directly. The Docker context finding was incorrect, as skevetter explained and Greptile conceded. All supplied threads were unnumbered.

Review dispositions for a77f38f:

  • Short-value redaction is intentionally conservative. Captured credentials have no minimum length; native Windows regressions verify one-character environment and proxy URL passwords remain masked. Overlap ordering and recursive mask expansion are fixed. The remaining diagnostic-readability tradeoff is accepted; dropping short credentials would weaken the existing privacy contract.
  • The agent-delivery diagnostic is in scope for the requested Ubuntu CI investigation, and the work is intentionally kept in this PR. It reports early delivery errors without changing production timeouts. The original failure remains unreproduced.
  • The inconclusive docstring percentage does not justify adding comments that repeat private helper or test names. Exported entry points and non-obvious ownership/security invariants are documented, and the required Go lint checks passed.
  • The fixture is used sequentially on the dedicated hosted Windows runner. Concurrent provisioning against shared persistent SSH/WSL resources is not a supported operating mode of this CI helper.
  • CodeRabbit’s auxiliary zizmor 1.30.1 audit did not complete: it could not locate the escaped single-quoted parity expression in the MicroSandbox run scalar. That exact scalar is already present on current origin/main. GitHub Actions and actionlint accepted it, all 90 jobs passed, and the interpolated matrix values are repository-defined constants. This is recorded as an analyzer limitation, not a successful zizmor audit.

The completed manual CodeRabbit review explicitly marks this exact commit as reviewed, reports no new actionable comments, and identifies no architecture-level concerns. Greptile reviewed the same commit at 5/5; all nine review threads are resolved.
