The runtime documentation described host checksum enforcement as future work and did not distinguish generic provider downloads, the selected external runtime, and Devsy's own supervisor. This updates the existing draft against the implemented host and the merged MicroSandbox acceptance work.

The protocol and driver pages now describe the selected Agent.Binaries SHA-256 requirement, prepared relative or absolute executable paths, Unix execute checks, per-operation supervision, inherited agent-host environment and separate backend-child ownership. A linked rollout decision records the actual Linux/amd64 KVM migration proof from merged PR1487: 80 native cases, running/stopped preservation, remote-agent workspace-copy reuse and warm-only performance observations. It separates that evidence from untested host/environment profiles and post-commit rollback limits.

The fresh Desktop MicroSandbox preset change remains a separate reviewed implementation. The docs preserve the embedded source alias and implementation for existing internal records and parity tests, retain provider set-source as the explicit migration path, and preserve Desktop's existing --use=false/default-selection behavior. No runtime, provider default, workflow or SDK behavior changes. The branch normally integrates actual main e428613 without rewriting published history.

Validation: the complete documentation site build and internal link check passed with zero link errors; all 13 scoped hooks completed (four passed, nine expected no-file skips), and source/caller/evidence audits found no material issue. Final correctly based Linux CLI lint passed with zero issues. Local CodeRabbit remains temporarily waived by the user while its service cannot start; no local review coverage is claimed.

The first full remote CodeRabbit review covered all four files and identified one valid minor wording issue: this external host calls ToEnvironment with nil extraEnv. Signed 8dbaf30 corrects both affected pages, retaining inherited environment, resolved values, guest separation and no allowlist. The thread is resolved. Fresh full site build, zero-error link check, Linux CLI lint (zero issues) and all 13 scoped hooks (four passed, nine expected skips) passed after the correction. All four GitHub commit signatures are valid.

All applicable exact-head implementation CI and site previews passed. Fresh Greptile completed on exact8dbaf30cd with confidence5/5 and no actionable issues. Explicit full CodeRabbit run d45e8ad8-b47c-4119-a55f-b5e49ff6d411 covered all4 files and completed with no actionable findings, minimal merge risk and minimal security architecture risk. The entire retained assessment and inlines were inspected; all threads are resolved. Trusted-provider authority and post-teardown recovery limits are documented, with no new rollback/concurrency promise. All final-head gates are complete. The merged 80-case result is explicitly attributed to PR1487/run38628263920, not a new native run of this docs branch. Current-head validation, review and signature gates are complete.

📝 Walkthrough

The provider documentation updates the external runtime contract for process ownership, executable verification, and environment handling. It also adds a gated rollout proposal for the Desktop fresh-install preset and lists the proposal in the developing-providers documentation.

The guidance assigns supervised plugin-session ownership to the host and describes runtime responsibility for independently managed children. It specifies checksum, file, and Unix execute-access checks for the selected external runtime. It also describes the inherited plugin and CLI-child environment and secret redaction.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8dbaf

No actionable merge-blocking issue was established in these documentation changes. The proposed Desktop default remains unchanged pending separate review.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8dbaf

The changes clarify existing security boundaries without changing runtime behavior or provider defaults. The proposed fresh-install change remains gated, and the documentation explicitly limits its compatibility and rollback claims. No introduced or worsened security concern was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A malicious trusted provider can act within the agent user's accessible files, credentials, environment, and backend permissions; supervision is not a security sandbox. This authority predates the PR, and the documentation-only comparison does not expand it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The executable trust decision remains tied to the selected provider declaration and byte verification before each operation. Generic installation downloads, runtime image downloads, and the Devsy-owned supervisor are separate trust subjects; the revised guidance avoids treating a path or transport cookie as authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Recovery guidance distinguishes pre-teardown validation from irreversible replacement effects. Cancellation or crashes after teardown can lose the old VM; recovery may require a fresh Find and explicit cleanup. Neither concurrent recreation serialization nor crash-safe multi-file provider commits was established by this review, and neither is promised by the rollout page.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Low impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues remain from this review.

Summary

Updates the external-runtime guides and adds a MicroSandbox rollout decision.

  • The external runtime guide explains which executable Devsy checks before launch.
  • The protocol guide separates the plugin's host environment from guest settings and backend children.
  • Provider docs show the evidence and boundaries for a future MicroSandbox source switch.

No new actionable issues were found in the changes since the previous review. No mounted-rule violations were found across the full PR.

Please perform a fresh full review of the entire draft PR at final head ab5210e against main e428613, covering all four current documentation files: runtime-protocol.mdx, driver.mdx, external-runtime-rollout.mdx and meta.json under sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-providers/.

Inspect the full changes and source-backed executable/checksum, environment, process ownership, migration/default preservation and platform/performance evidence boundaries. Include security/architecture and merge-risk assessment in the completed review. This is docs-only; merged PR1487 supplies the attributed native proof. Old89ca review metadata does not cover this head. Use included review allowance only.

- Line 54: Update the external-driver environment description to say it inherits
the agent host environment and appends resolved provider/workspace values, but
does not append explicit extra values because external.New passes nil for
extraEnv. Preserve the distinction from the guest environment and the statement
that the driver introduces no environment allowlist.

@coderabbitai full review

Please review the entire draft PR at exact final head 8dbaf30 against main e428613. Cover all four files under sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-providers/: driver.mdx, runtime-protocol.mdx, external-runtime-rollout.mdx and meta.json. The prior valid environment wording finding is fixed in both pages; external.New passes nil extraEnv.

Include an explicit final-head security/architecture and merge-risk assessment in your completed response, even if the assessment is that no significant concerns exist. The previous invocation reported that its deferred architecture/priority summary could not be published, and the mutable summary retains old assessment metadata; that does not cover this final head. This is documentation-only; runtime proof is explicitly attributed to merged PR1487. Use included review allowance only.
