Description

Fixes the Expo E2E flake reported twice on the Version packages PR (Slack 1, Slack 2): a launch that signs in with a ticket sometimes ends on No session was found with id sess_.... It affects every spec that launches signed in, on both platforms. This supersedes the closed #10397 and #10399, which were written without a device run and targeted a different cause.

Cause

Completing a sign-in rotates the client token. Frontend API treats a request that still carries the old token as a request from an unknown client and mints a new, empty client for it. I confirmed both against a development instance with curl: the old token gets a new client ID and a new token, and touching the new session with that token returns resource_not_found.

The JS and native SDKs share one device token with compare-and-set. While the ticket sign-in is in flight, either SDK can send another request with the pre-sign-in token, such as native's refresh after JS stored its token, or a JS GET /v1/client pull. When that request reaches the server after the rotation and its response is handled first, its compare-and-set (old token → new empty client) succeeds. The sign-in response's compare-and-set (old token → rotated token) then fails. finalize() touches the new session with the empty client's token and gets a 404.

The app logs of a run with request logging (an uncommitted patch) show both orders: native replacing the token in one launch, and a JS pull doing it in another.

Fix

The client token is a JWT whose payload names its client. When saveClientToken's compare-and-set fails, the JS SDK now checks whether:

  • its response token is a rotation (same client as the request's token), and
  • the shared token now belongs to a different client.

Only a request that used the rotated-away token can produce that state, so the SDK swaps its rotated token back in, still with compare-and-set against the current value, and then asks native to refresh its client. Android resets and refetches on a token change by itself, but iOS keeps its previous client object, so without the refresh native would keep showing the empty client.

It leaves the native token in place when the late response is the one that minted a new client, when native holds a newer token for the same client, and when a token isn't a client JWT.

A stale request can also be a JS GET /v1/client pull. clerk-js writes that response into its client object, so JS briefly read as signed out until a later pull. pull() now compares the fetched client with the shared token's client, and when they differ it fetches once more before applying it.

One conflict case is pinned by a test rather than prevented. If native signs out with the pre-rotation token while a JS response rotates it, the server applies the sign-out to the throwaway client, so the reclaim restores the original client with its session and the user stays signed in. This needs a native sign-out and a JS session change in the same few hundred milliseconds.

The behavior-test fake server now issues JWT-shaped tokens and retires a token when it rotates, as Frontend API does, so the harness runs these paths end to end.

Device runs

All runs used the verify-clerk-expo remote devices, the four ticket specs (native-js-sync/sign-out-from-native, token-cache-persistence/relaunch, user-button-and-profile/embedded-profile, user-button-and-profile/profile), and --retries 0.

Build Android iOS
main (63847a9) with request logging 4 of 7 passed. 3 failed with No session was found —
This branch with request logging 6 of 6 passed. The reclaim fired once, and that launch passed —
This branch (39b8465), no local changes 30 of 30 passed in 5 runs 18 of 18 passed in 3 runs
This branch (49c702b), no local changes 18 of 18 passed in 3 runs 18 of 18 passed in 3 runs

The before run is not attached: attach refuses runs with uncommitted changes, and the logging patch made the failing run one. A before run on a clean main needs a separate before branch.

… one

Completing a sign-in rotates the client token. A request still carrying the old token gets a new, empty client from Frontend API, and if its response won the compare-and-set on the shared device token, the session the sign-in created was no longer reachable. When the JS SDK's rotated token loses the compare-and-set to a token for a different client, it now takes the shared token back.

Walkthrough

Native token synchronization now extracts client IDs from JWT payloads. If an expected-token update fails, it can reclaim the current native token when the request and new tokens belong to the same client and the current token belongs to a different client. Client pulls retry once when the fetched client ID differs from the native token’s client ID. Tests exercise token rotation races, and a patch changeset records the release note.

Explanation

The changes stay within the current objective. nativeClientSync.ts reclaims a rotated token only after compare-and-set failure and refreshes the native client. The added behavior tests cover stale-token refresh, delayed client pulls, and native sign-out races. Fake server updates and the changeset support this Expo fix. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is specific and tied to the changeset. It explains the root cause: a client token rotation during ticket sign-in, followed by a stale request that mints an empty client. It also covers the fix in nativeClientSync.ts, the pull() re-fetch, the fake server token changes, and the device test runs. The description matches the raw summary and the PR objectives.

Integration Tests (generic, chrome) failed on 49c702b in integration/tests/passkeys.test.ts ("passkeys as a second factor": "offers the passkey as the starting second factor" and "lists the passkey under "Use another method""), each with page.waitForFunction: Timeout 10000ms exceeded. One of the two passed on a retry.

It isn't this PR's: the diff only changes @clerk/expo (nativeClientSync.ts and its tests), which the browser integration apps don't load, and the same check passed on this PR's previous head, b6b36ac. No fix exists to port yet. I've re-run the failed job once.
