Description

🤖 AI-assisted. I reviewed every change.

SessionTokenCache serves session tokens past their server expiry when the device clock runs behind. The backend then rejects them, and non-GET or cross-origin requests can't refresh (session-token-expired-refresh-non-eligible-no-refresh-cookie, ...-non-eligible-non-get).

Cause. The cache read the server's exp and iat against Date.now(). A device S seconds slow served each token S seconds late, and its refresh timer fired S seconds late. #672 fixed this in 2023. #7317 reintroduced it, and #9030 kept it.

Fix. Each entry stores one expiry on the device clock, the earlier of:

  • exp read on the device clock, which is late by the device's lag
  • cache insert time plus the token lifetime, which is late by the token's age on arrival

The remaining error is min(lag, age). Fast clocks behave as before. Tokens from other tabs get the same bound. TokenCacheEntry.createdAt is removed, since no production caller passed it.

Alternatives.

  • Measure SessionTokenCache age on the device clock #10361 counts a full lifetime from cache insert only. That fixes slow clocks but serves aged tokens late on accurate clocks. It fails 4 tests here, including one that already exists on main.
  • Measuring the clock offset isn't possible from the browser. FAPI doesn't expose Date cross-origin (access-control-expose-headers lists only Authorization, X-Country, Retry-After, Clerk-Cookie, Clerk-Db-Jwt).

Evidence. In a browser repro, the clock was 36s behind and getToken() ran every 2s for 200s. main produced 16 of 100 tokens rejected, the worst 20.8s past exp. An equivalent implementation of this fix produced 0 of 100. Tokens arrived at most 3s old.

Known gap. Caching the same raw token again while the clock is behind restarts its lifetime. The browser runs never hit this, because every client response carried a freshly minted token.

Fixes #10185
Fixes #10231

Supersedes #10361. Thanks to @umeraamir69 for the diagnosis.

SessionTokenCache read the server-issued exp against the device clock, so a
device running behind served tokens past their server expiry. Bound the
remaining TTL by both exp on the device clock and a full lifetime from cache
insert. Broadcast entries now stamp createdAt with the device clock instead
of the JWT iat.

📝 Walkthrough

The token cache now stores an absolute expiry timestamp. It uses the earlier of the JWT’s exp claim and the token’s full lifetime measured from cache insertion. Tests cover clock skew, proactive refresh, stale broadcasts, and recaching behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: jacekradko

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e2642

The fix removes most cases where a slow-clock browser serves a server-expired session token. Re-caching the same token on such a device can still extend its life past server expiry, so those requests can still be rejected. Resolve this narrower gap, or explicitly accept it, before merging.

Explanation

The change addresses both active linked issues [#10185] and [#10231]. SessionTokenCache now stores device-clock cachedAt and computes expiresAt as the earlier of the device-clock reading of exp and the cache insertion time plus the token lifetime. get() and cleanup timers use expiresAt, which prevents late-clock cache hits and late refreshes. The tests cover slow-clock fetches, slow-clock broadcasts, proactive refresh, aged tokens, repeated caching, and fast-clock behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to packages/clerk-js/src/core/tokenCache.ts, its focused tests, and a package changeset. The source change implements the linked token-expiration fix. The test changes validate that behavior and update affected fixtures. The changeset documents the fix. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

commit: e264249

…entries

Replace createdAt and expiresIn on TokenCacheValue with cachedAt and
expiresAt, both on the device clock, so the fields mean what they say.
Remove the TokenCacheEntry.createdAt input. No production caller passed
it, and a caller passing iat would mix server and device clocks again.
cachedAt stays the insert time after the token resolves.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the expiry when caching the same token again.

If a slow-clock tab calls set() again with the same raw token, this new cachedAt restarts the lifetime term and replaces the earlier deletion timer. With a 40-second clock lag and a 60-second token lifetime, recaching at age 50 seconds moves the effective expiry from age 60 to age 100 seconds. get() can therefore return that token after server expiry. Retain the earlier effective expiry for the same raw token. The PR objectives identify this recaching gap.
