Stack Encrypt is the Rust crate that encrypts a value under a per-value key from CipherStash's key service (ZeroKMS) and gives back one Ciphertext to store. Its owned API (keyset.encrypt(value)) deliberately accepts only scalars (a String, an integer, a float, a bool) and refuses a struct, a Vec or a map: there is no "just serialize it" fallback, because that would silently decide the stored bytes of every composite value.
This PR adds the explicit way to encrypt a whole value as one ciphertext: wrap it in OpaqueBlob<T>.
let ct = keyset.encrypt_with_context(OpaqueBlob::new(profile),("users","profile")).await?;let profile:OpaqueBlob<Profile> = keyset.decrypt_with_context(ct,("users","profile")).await?;
A user can now store an ordinary serde struct (a card, a profile, a settings object) as one column, under one data key, with the same Ciphertext type, the same to_bytes/from_bytes storage and the same context binding as a scalar. The encoding is Vitamin C's versioned storage profile (VCS header + version byte, inside the plaintext so it is encrypted and authenticated), which is the format the Go SDK already writes for its opaque structs, so a Go-written opaque column opens in Rust and a Rust-written one opens in Go. Nothing inside a blob is searchable; it is read back whole or not at all.
Decoding happens only after the ciphertext authenticates, and every refusal has its own class: tampering or a wrong context is still Aead; a blob opened as a scalar (or a scalar as a blob) is OpenedType; bytes that are not a blob this type reads are a new Error::Blob(BlobError), one code each for "not a blob", "a later storage version: upgrade the reader", "malformed" and "well-formed but another shape". No message or payload ever names a value.
Honest limits are documented rather than claimed away: the ciphertext's length is the encoded length plus a constant (no padding, so a present Option or a longer string shows), nothing here is constant time, the returned value is an ordinary owned value that nothing wipes on drop (Zeroizing<OpaqueBlob<T>> is the opt-in guard), and a derived Deserialize that built some fields and then refuses a later one drops those fields unwiped. That last one is pinned as a negative control in the heap observer so it cannot be forgotten.
Changes
Dependencies
Move the root Cargo workspace's vitaminc* pins from 0.8.0 to 0.8.1, the first release with vitaminc_aead_frame::storage. Upstream changelogs state nothing 0.8.0 wrote or read changes. Updated every lockfile that links these crates: root, packages/eql, both Go guests, the three fuzz crates; the three caret "0.8.0" manifest pins that moved with them. Only the vitaminc entries move: edges the update had re-resolved (socket2, getrandom, windows-sys) are kept at their previous resolution. The EQL ORE timing generator (ctgen) pins =0.8.0 on its own and is untouched.
stack-encrypt now depends on vitaminc-aead-frame with serde unconditionally (was optional behind dynamic); dynamic adds no dependency now.
stack-encrypt API
OpaqueBlob<T> (src/blob.rs, pub mod blob): new, into_inner, get, get_mut, encode (the storage blob, Protected), decode; blob::HEADER and blob::VERSION. OpaqueEncode for T: Serialize + Zeroize, OpaqueDecode for T: DeserializeOwned + Zeroize. Debug prints OpaqueBlob(***); no serde impls of its own.
Error::Blob(BlobError), transparent, with blob_unwritable, blob_not_a_blob, blob_unsupported_version, blob_malformed, blob_mismatch codes and ErrorPayload (version / declared-field path).
Zeroizing<S>: OpaqueEncode and Zeroizing<P>: OpaqueDecode: the opt-in drop-guarded result, using the ecosystem type rather than a new adapter.
From<SealedValue> for Ciphertext and back, so a CipherText::Single leaf from the structural API opens through the owned API.
Sealed-trait restructure in scalar.rs: Encode::seal / Decode::open carry the capability; OpaqueDecode drops vitaminc's Decrypt supertrait (breaking for generic code that used it; the trait is sealed, so no implementor outside the crate exists). scalar_ciphertext() routes through the sealed trait.
Crate docs: a "Whole values as one ciphertext" section; blob module docs cover the codec, supported types, version and schema evolution, decode errors, what the length reveals, cleanup and Go interop. examples/opaque_blob.rs runs it live.
ADR-0011 records the decision and the alternatives (blanket Serialize impl, transport codec, MessagePack, a Decrypt impl for field-level use).
tests/opaque_blob.rs (18): round trips through every entry point; one data key per blob; the bytes leaf shared with the structural writer in both directions; the storage blob this crate writes pinned as hex; two Go-written blobs (with and without the optional field, produced with vcffi.MarshalStorage) read through the codec and through a sealed leaf under Go's <context>/value; a pinned sealed ciphertext over a fixed key source that must keep opening; tamper and wrong context are Aead before any decoding; scalar-vs-blob leaf kind is OpenedType; not-a-blob, later version, truncated, trailing bytes and mismatch each refused by class after exactly one retrieval; an encoding refusal wipes the source and requests no key; source wiped before await/discard and on context failure; an oversized context refused before the value is encoded; Zeroizing on both sides, with a drop witness (a plain result is not wiped on drop, a Zeroizing one is wiped once); serde schema evolution (default, alias, widen, narrow, new required field); the ciphertext-length arithmetic; Debug/error text holds no plaintext.
tests/heap_hygiene.rs: blob encrypt, decrypt and a refused shape leave no marked plaintext in freed heap blocks, nor in blocks allocated during the operation and still live at its end (watched_for_leaks, opt-in, with the negative control the_spy_sees_a_leaked_block); a_partial_decode_drops_the_fields_it_built_unwiped is a should_panic negative control pinning the documented limit.
tests/ui/opaque_blob_requires_the_wrapper.rs and opaque_blob_requires_zeroize.rs: a bare struct and a non-Zeroize blob do not compile. Two existing .stderr files pick up OpaqueBlob<T> in rustc's implementor list.
src/codes.rs: every BlobError variant has a code and a payload row.
Go: TestOpaqueReadsARustWrittenBlob in languages/golang/encrypt/gensupport reads the pinned Rust-written blob into the Go shape and checks the one-byte Some-marker difference against Go's own bytes.
Conformance
lifecycle-profiles.json enrolls the new opaque_blob binary and heap tests under ownership, partial-output, buffer-cleanup and validation-before-I/O, and adds the native-partial-decode-fields known gap (listed only as a limitation, not as cleanup evidence); lifecycle-contract.md and coverage.md describe the evidence and the remaining gap (a fresh sealed blob exchange through the Go conformance task).
Verification
All run from the worktree on this branch, no CipherStash credentials, fake key sources only.

Not run: cargo-mutants (by instruction), the Go guest release wasm builds and their Go tests, the EQL workspace test suites. Those workspaces type-check against 0.8.1 (above), and only their lockfiles' vitaminc entries moved.
Start with packages/stack-encrypt/src/blob.rs (module docs first, then the two sealed impls at the bottom) and ADR-0011. src/scalar.rs shows the sealed-trait restructure that lets a blob share the scalar path.
The vitaminc 0.8.1 bump is the first commit on its own so the lockfile churn can be reviewed apart from the feature. It touches seven lockfiles because the Go guests, EQL and the fuzz crates all link stack-encrypt by path and CI checks their locks with --locked.
Exchange evidence is fixed vectors, not a live Go build. Go's bytes were produced once with vcffi.MarshalStorage (go run of a scratch program in the Go module, since deleted) and pinned in the Rust test; Rust's bytes are pinned in the Go test. A fresh sealed exchange (Go seals an opaque struct, Rust opens the ciphertext, and back) through mise run test:conformance needs the wasm guest build and a new conformance case, and is listed as open in coverage.md.
Deferred: Encrypt/Decrypt impls that would let an OpaqueBlob be a field of a structural record. vitaminc's sink error cannot carry the blob refusal classes, so every blob error there would read as a shape mismatch; ADR-0011 records this.
Not claimed: constant-time serialization, length hiding, or erasure of serde's partially built fields; each is documented and the last is pinned as a negative control.
Secure-buffer adoption (stack-encrypt: adopt Vitamin C secure Buffer after #559 ships #1468) is coordinated rather than solved: the encoded blob and the opened bytes ride in Protected (vitaminc's) and the owned source in the existing Protected guard; no new buffer type is introduced here.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added whole-value encryption for structs, sequences, and maps as a single ciphertext using OpaqueBlob.
Added support for reading and writing the versioned storage format, including interoperability with Go.
Added Zeroizing as an opt-in way to wipe decrypted values when they are dropped.
Added conversions between Ciphertext and SealedValue.
Breaking Changes
OpaqueDecode no longer includes the Decrypt bound. Callers using Decrypt methods may need to add that bound separately.
vitaminc 0.8.1 is the first release of vitaminc-aead-frame with the
storage profile (`vitaminc_aead_frame::storage`, feature `serde`): a
versioned, self-describing encoding for bytes that are kept, which the Go
SDK already writes and reads for its opaque structs through vcffi. The
next commit builds stack-encrypt's `OpaqueBlob<T>` on it, so the family
moves together: all of the vitaminc crates must share one version or the
aead crate is duplicated in the graph.
Upstream's changelogs for 0.8.1 state that nothing 0.8.0 wrote or read
changes: the leaf format, the transport frame and every existing
ciphertext are unaffected. The only other change is a transport serde fix
for a newtype map key.
Every lockfile that links these crates moves with the root: the EQL
workspace (eql-bindings depends on stack-encrypt by path), both Go guests
and the three fuzz crates, each of which CI checks with `--locked` or
builds from. The caret `"0.8.0"` pins in those manifests move to `"0.8.1"`
so they say what their locks hold. The EQL ORE timing generator pins
`=0.8.0` on its own and does not link stack-encrypt; it is untouched.
Refs #1484
The owned scalar API seals one scalar as one `Ciphertext` and refuses a
composite, by design: a `Serialize` fallback would decide the stored bytes
of every struct silently. That left no way to encrypt a whole value as one
ciphertext. `OpaqueBlob<T>` is that way, and it is explicit: wrap to
encrypt, name the wrapper to decrypt, `into_inner` to take the value.
The encoding is Vitamin C's storage profile, version 1, through
`vitaminc_aead_frame::storage`: a `VCS` header and version byte inside the
plaintext (so encrypted and authenticated with the value), explicit `Some`
markers, typed map keys, a frozen specification and a golden corpus. It is
the format the Go SDK writes for its opaque structs through vcffi, so the
two SDKs share one stored format and this crate adds no second wire
format. The encoded blob is sealed as one bytes leaf of the unchanged
`SealedValue` v1 envelope through the same path as a scalar: one data key,
no new KMS request shape, no new AAD.
Decrypting authenticates first and decodes after. A leaf that does not
open is `Aead`; a leaf of another kind is `OpenedType`; bytes that are not
a blob this type reads are the new `Error::Blob(BlobError)`, one variant
and code per class (unwritable, not a blob, unsupported version,
malformed, mismatch), each a refusal of an authentic ciphertext. No
message or payload names a value.
To let a blob implement the sealed capabilities, `OpaqueEncode` and
`OpaqueDecode` now carry the operation in their sealed supertraits
(`Encode::seal`, `Decode::open`) and `OpaqueDecode` drops vitaminc's
`Decrypt` as a supertrait: a blob opens through a bytes leaf and decodes
after, and the sink's error type cannot carry the blob's refusal classes.
Both traits are sealed, so the only code affected is generic code bounded
on `OpaqueDecode` that also used `Decrypt`'s methods. `Zeroizing<_>`
implements both traits as well, which gives the scalar API its opt-in
drop-guarded result without a new adapter.
Ownership follows the scalar contract and the limits are stated. The
owned source is guarded, encoded into a `Protected` buffer, planned and
wiped before the pending is returned, on success and on an encoding
refusal (which requests no key); the opened bytes are `Protected` while
they are read. The returned value is an ordinary owned value that nothing
wipes on drop. The ciphertext's length is the encoded length plus a
constant, nothing is constant time, and a derived `Deserialize` that built
some fields and refuses a later one drops them unwiped; the heap observer
pins that last one as a negative control rather than hiding it.
Exchange evidence is fixed vectors: the blob this crate writes is pinned
and read by a Go test, and two Go-written blobs (produced once with
`vcffi.MarshalStorage`) are read here through the codec and through a
sealed leaf under Go's `<context>/value`. A fresh sealed exchange through
the conformance task remains open and is listed as such in the coverage
map.

Explanation
The dependency updates, sealed-trait changes, SealedValue conversions, ADR, changelog, Go interoperability test, and lifecycle/conformance updates support #1484. The Rust and Go tests cover the new blob format and its cleanup and validation behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the supplied whole-PR summary.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
#1484 requires protection of decoded intermediates and partial failures. The PR protects the opened bytes and documents cleanup limits, but a_partial_decode_drops_the_fields_it_built_unwiped intentionally records that fields built before a later Deserialize refusal are dropped unwiped. This is a concrete unmet coding requirement. The other requirements have supporting evidence: explicit OpaqueBlob<T> encoding, authenticated versioned storage profile, pre-decode authentication, length and timing documentation, ordinary and Zeroizing results, persistence and malformed-input tests, pinned Rust/Go vectors, and lifecycle evidence.
Resolution
Prevent plaintext fields created before a later deserialization failure from remaining unwiped, or otherwise add a guarded partial-decoding path that satisfies the partial-failure cleanup requirement. Add a passing test and update the lifecycle evidence after the cleanup behavior is implemented.

What changes in 0.8.1. The 0.8.1 changelogs say aead-frame writes and reads the same bytes as 0.8.0. aead only names two new tags that Frame::parse still refuses. normalize and ore move to orderable-bytes 0.2.1, which "changes no encoding". The frozen fixtures ran and passed in nextest: frozen_bytes 20, term_bytes 15, json_tree_vectors 4, stored_rows 1. The recipher, clww-ore and ore-rs= pins are untouched.
Standards
conformance/stack-encrypt/v1/lifecycle-profiles.json:9 (and every features array): the file was reformatted, and biome format now rejects it. pnpm run code:check gates CI on that. CONFIRMED.
lifecycle-profiles.json:184 lists opaque_blob::a_partial_decode_drops_the_fields_it_built_unwiped as evidence for lifecycle-buffer-cleanup-v1. lifecycle-contract.md says it is "enrolled as the observation of a limit, not as passing cleanup evidence". The Go precedent (TestPlaintextDoesNotRemainInGuestMemoryAfterDecrypt) keeps its known-gap test out of the evidence lists. CONFIRMED.
packages/stack-encrypt/CHANGELOG.md [Unreleased] Added does not mention From<SealedValue> for Ciphertext or the reverse impl (src/scalar.rs:181-193). That is new public API on a published crate. CONFIRMED.
src/blob.rs:417,448,459: BlobError::{Unwritable, Malformed, Mismatch} expose vitaminc_aead_frame::storage::Error publicly, and the crate does not re-export it. A caller cannot name ErrorKind without adding the dependency. This is a judgement call. PLAUSIBLE.
src/blob.rs:565: the unit test builds other only to drop it. Dead code. CONFIRMED (nit).
There are no issue numbers in code, doc comments, the ADR or the contract docs.
Spec
A leaked plaintext passes every test. I added std::mem::forget(bytes) to the decode closure (src/blob.rs:392), which never frees the opened Protected<Vec<u8>>. All 35 opaque_blob and heap_hygiene tests still passed. The heap spy only scans freed blocks, and the drop witnesses (Tracked, Refusing) cover the source only. So "decoded intermediates" are guarded only against an unwiped free, not against a leak. By contrast, a no-op OpaqueBlob::zeroize (the other deliberate breakage) failed three tests. CONFIRMED.
The Zeroizing opt-in has no drop witness.zeroizing_is_the_opt_in_drop_guard_on_both_sides (tests/opaque_blob.rs:526) only round-trips. Nothing observes the wipe on drop, or its absence for a plain OpaqueBlob<T>, which is what the last acceptance bullet asks for. CONFIRMED.
The blob is encoded before the context is checked.src/blob.rs:363 encodes the value before encrypt_opaque checks the descriptor (target/core.rs:53). A scalar refuses an oversized context first. A blob copies its plaintext into the encoded buffer first, and an unwritable value under a bad context reports Blob instead of DescriptorTooLong. CONFIRMED (minor).
Verified by reading the code:
Authentication comes before decoding: open_opaque runs open_keyed before the try_map decode.
Tampering and a wrong context return Aead, and leaf-kind swaps return OpenedType.
Not a blob, a later version, truncated input and trailing bytes each get their own class, after one retrieval.
Ciphertext length = encoded length + a constant (the SealedValue fields are fixed).
Debug, Display and payload carry no value: the profile's messages are fixed text and custom drops its message.
The only breaking change to the sealed traits is the supertrait removal the CHANGELOG states. Error is #[non_exhaustive].
Acceptance bullets:
Codec, discriminator and version, types, evolution and errors: met.
One ciphertext, distinct from batching and tree persistence: met.
Authenticate before decode, plus guards: partial (the leak gap above).
Timing and length docs: met.
Persist and reload through a fresh cipher, fixed vectors, malformed input, exchange: met with fixed vectors (a pinned sealed ciphertext over a fixed key source, and Go storage vectors in both directions).
Owned results plus an opt-in adapter: partial (no drop witness).
Deferrals. The deferrals are acceptable. The fresh sealed Go exchange is listed in coverage.md and needs the guest build. The partial-decode limit is documented and pinned. Field-level impls have a stated reason (the sink error cannot carry the blob classes).
Count. Dependency bump: 1 (lock churn beyond vitaminc). Standards: 5 (worst: the reformatted profiles JSON fails code:check). Spec: 3 (worst: a leaked opened buffer passes the whole suite).
Moving the vitaminc family to 0.8.1 also re-resolved some dependency
edges that have nothing to do with vitaminc, each to a version that was
already in the lock: hyper-util, quinn and quinn-udp to socket2 0.6.5 in
the root lock, tempfile to getrandom 0.4.2 in the EQL lock, and several
windows-sys edges in the root, EQL and Go guest locks.
Put those edges back as they were, so the bump changes only the vitaminc
entries, as its commit message says. Every edited lock still passes
`cargo metadata --locked`.
A scalar's context is checked before the value is planned. A blob was
encoded first and only then reached that check, so a context no request
could carry still cost a plaintext copy in the encoded buffer, and an
unwritable value under such a context was reported as a blob error
rather than the context error a scalar gives.
Check the descriptor before encoding, and pin the order with a test: a
value whose `Serialize` refuses, under an oversized context, is refused
as `DescriptorTooLong`, with the source wiped and no key requested.
Also drop a value the blob unit test built only to drop it.
…fers
Two cleanup claims had no test that could fail.
The heap spy scans blocks as they are freed, so a buffer that is never
freed passes it: replacing the decode step's drop of the opened buffer
with `mem::forget` left every blob test green. `watched_for_leaks` also
records the blocks allocated during the watch and fails if one still
live at its end holds the marker. It is opt-in, since a watch that
returns plaintext keeps it live on purpose, and the three blob heap
tests use it. `the_spy_sees_a_leaked_block` is its negative control. The
`mem::forget` breakage now fails two of them.
`zeroizing_is_the_opt_in_drop_guard_on_both_sides` only round-tripped.
`only_a_zeroizing_result_is_wiped_on_drop` counts wipes: a decrypted
`OpaqueBlob<T>` is not wiped when dropped, and a decrypted
`Zeroizing<OpaqueBlob<T>>` is wiped exactly once.
The blob enrollment had reformatted every array in
`lifecycle-profiles.json`, which `biome format` rejects and
`pnpm run code:check` gates on. It is back in Biome's form.
The partial-decode negative control was listed as evidence for
`lifecycle-buffer-cleanup-v1` while the contract calls it a known gap,
"not passing cleanup evidence". It now appears only as the
`native-partial-decode-fields` limitation, as the Go known gap does.
The new tests are enrolled: the leak control under buffer cleanup, the
`Zeroizing` drop witness under ownership, and the context-first refusal
under validation before I/O. The contract text says what each adds.
`From<SealedValue> for Ciphertext` and the reverse are new public API
and were missing from [Unreleased]. The cleanup bullet also now covers
the context check before encoding and the heap observer's leak watch.
The lockfiles re-resolved edges unrelated to vitaminc (socket2, getrandom, windows-sys)
a8fa317: the edges are back to their previous resolution in the root, EQL and both Go guest locks. Only vitaminc entries move now, and every lock still passes cargo metadata --locked.
lifecycle-profiles.json reformatted, so biome format failed
ad718ca: back in Biome's format, and biome check is clean.
The partial-decode negative control was enrolled as buffer-cleanup evidence
ad718ca: removed from the evidence list. It stays only as the native-partial-decode-fields known gap, and the contract text was adjusted to match.
The CHANGELOG did not mention From<SealedValue> for Ciphertext or the reverse
495f672: added watched_for_leaks, which also fails on a marked block still live at the end of the watch. The three blob heap tests now use it, and the_spy_sees_a_leaked_block is its negative control. I re-ran the mem::forget(bytes) breakage: the decrypt test and the mismatch heap test now fail.
No drop witness for the Zeroizing result
495f672: only_a_zeroizing_result_is_wiped_on_drop counts wipes. A plain OpaqueBlob<T> is not wiped on drop, and a Zeroizing<OpaqueBlob<T>> is wiped exactly once.
A blob was encoded before its context was checked
1ac3e35: the descriptor is now checked first, as for a scalar. the_context_is_refused_before_the_value_is_encoded pins the order.
The new tests are enrolled in the lifecycle profiles (ad718ca).
Declined. I did not re-export vitaminc_aead_frame::storage::{Error, ErrorKind} from stack_encrypt::blob. That would add API surface on a published crate, which is a design call for the author. Today a caller can match on the BlobError variants without it.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Pin the Go writer output to the shared Rust fixture.
The test checks only the blob length and a Go self-decode. A Go encoding change that keeps the length still passes this test. The Rust test reads a fixed Go-written blob and does not call the Go writer, so it also passes. Compare ours with the Go-written hex vector in packages/stack-encrypt/tests/opaque_blob.rs. This pins the output for this profile with the nickname set.

every_payload documents that it covers each error type's structured fields, one variant per arm. It has no Error::Blob row. The Blob arm at cipher.rs:427 forwards to BlobError::payload(), so every_payload_carries_its_fields does not check it. Replacing that forwarding body with an empty map would not fail that test.
Add a row for UnsupportedVersion. Its expected map is {"version": 2, "supported": 1}, matching BlobError::payload() at blob.rs:512-516.

Add an Error::Blob case to every_payload for BlobError::UnsupportedVersion and
expect its structured payload to contain version 2 and supported 1, so
every_payload_carries_its_fields verifies this error’s fields.
…context
ZeroKMS refuses a wrong context's descriptor before the AEAD runs, so it
surfaces as Error::Kms; only a key source that ignores descriptors reaches
Error::Aead. Say so in the blob module docs and the changelog, as the crate
docs do, and limit the authentic-ciphertext claim to OpenedType and Blob.
watched_for_leaks reset LIVE and set TRACKING before watched took GATE, so
under threaded cargo test another watch could erase its records or turn
tracking off mid-watch. Take the gate first and run a gate-free inner
watch, and release LIVE before asserting so the negative control does not
poison it for later watches.
f90867ba7 docs(stack-encrypt): state the Kms and Aead outcomes of a wrong blob context. Covers the CodeRabbit changelog and blob module-doc findings. A wrong context is now described as Kms under ZeroKMS and Aead only under a key source that ignores descriptors. The authentic-ciphertext claim is limited to OpenedType and Blob.
a7fa6be22 test(stack-encrypt): hold the heap spy's gate across a leak watch. Covers the CodeRabbit heap_hygiene finding. watched_for_leaks now holds GATE from the LIVE reset to the last read. It also releases LIVE before asserting, so the negative control no longer poisons it for later watches in the same process.
Verification: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings, and nextest with STACK_CONFORMANCE_REQUIRED=1 (1118 passed). Also doctests (56 passed), mise run doc:stack-encrypt, and heap_hygiene under threaded cargo test (20/20, all should_panic controls included).
Trybuild: no .stderr under tests/ui contains a $RUST/ snippet, so these expectations do not depend on rust-src. CI on f806561 was green apart from one pending Go Windows job. Codex finished its code and security reviews on f806561 with no findings.

Summary
Stack Encrypt is the Rust crate that encrypts a value under a per-value key from CipherStash's key service (ZeroKMS) and gives back one
Ciphertextto store. Its owned API (keyset.encrypt(value)) deliberately accepts only scalars (aString, an integer, a float, abool) and refuses a struct, aVecor a map: there is no "just serialize it" fallback, because that would silently decide the stored bytes of every composite value. This PR adds the explicit way to encrypt a whole value as one ciphertext: wrap it in
OpaqueBlob<T>.A user can now store an ordinary
serdestruct (a card, a profile, a settings object) as one column, under one data key, with the sameCiphertexttype, the sameto_bytes/from_bytesstorage and the same context binding as a scalar. The encoding is Vitamin C's versioned storage profile (VCSheader + version byte, inside the plaintext so it is encrypted and authenticated), which is the format the Go SDK already writes for its opaque structs, so a Go-written opaque column opens in Rust and a Rust-written one opens in Go. Nothing inside a blob is searchable; it is read back whole or not at all.Decoding happens only after the ciphertext authenticates, and every refusal has its own class: tampering or a wrong context is still
Aead; a blob opened as a scalar (or a scalar as a blob) isOpenedType; bytes that are not a blob this type reads are a newError::Blob(BlobError), one code each for "not a blob", "a later storage version: upgrade the reader", "malformed" and "well-formed but another shape". No message or payload ever names a value.Honest limits are documented rather than claimed away: the ciphertext's length is the encoded length plus a constant (no padding, so a present
Optionor a longer string shows), nothing here is constant time, the returned value is an ordinary owned value that nothing wipes on drop (Zeroizing<OpaqueBlob<T>>is the opt-in guard), and a derivedDeserializethat built some fields and then refuses a later one drops those fields unwiped. That last one is pinned as a negative control in the heap observer so it cannot be forgotten.Changes
