Closes #33

User problem and decision

Natural version-specific queries for official Python release changes did not surface the matching What’s New page in the first 20 offline section-search results for the tested 3.12 deprecation and 3.13 asyncio tasks. Known anchors remained retrievable. This adds a bounded, read-only release-scoped navigator over already indexed official pages; it does not change the existing six tools or perform runtime network access. See the dated primary-source decision in #33 and the broker publication evidence.

Acceptance

  • Return nonempty official indexed sections in document order with canonical anchors and get_docs continuation.
  • Bound serialized output and paginate deterministically; handle an unindexed version explicitly.
  • Classify section kinds conservatively using actual heading ancestry; uncertain headings remain other.
  • Cover 3.12 C API id6, future pending removal, 3.13 asyncio, empty headings, pagination and offline behavior.
  • Preserve existing tool contracts and frozen retrieval/citation gate. Worker reported locked sync, ruff, pyright, 551 tests, stdio smoke, doctor, full-index 65-case gate and build exit 0. The independent prepublication reviewer approved the published exact content; exact-head PR verification and GitHub CI are still pending.

Why this approach

A dedicated release-scoped tool makes the indexed official release notes discoverable without guessing slugs. It is intentionally narrow; this is not a generated-answer accuracy or competitor-quality claim. The retained full index lacks independently attested exact CPython source/builder provenance.

Supervisor review

This is an intentional new MCP tool surface, approved by Vision’s explicit product decision in #33 and subject to separate exact-head verification. No schema, ingestion, dependency, workflow, license or existing test weakening is included. CodeRabbit findings, if any, will be triaged before merge; a skipped review is not independent verification.

Outcome review: 2026-10-17. Revise/remove if canonical sections or kind labels prove unreliable, frozen retrieval/citation results worsen, or user feedback shows the tool is redundant.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a tool for browsing “What’s New” sections for a Python version, with optional category filtering and pagination.
    • Results include categorized sections with concise excerpts; longer content may be truncated with guidance for finding the full documentation.
    • Requests for versions without indexed release notes return an unavailable-page error.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a4f77

An indexed release page with unusually long headings or anchors can produce an oversized tool response. The affected case is narrow, but the response limit should be enforced before merging or accepted as a known limitation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a4f77

The new operation stays within indexed documentation and adds no query-time network access or write authority. Risk is limited, but its whole-response size guarantee can fail when stored headings or anchors are unusually large.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: The new whole-response budget does not contain oversized section metadata. Titles and anchors have no length constraint, and the service subtracts their serialized size before adjusting only bodies. If metadata alone exceeds 20,000 characters, the response remains oversized and bodies can be empty. This weakens the public operation's per-call output-containment guarantee; triggering it requires oversized indexed metadata, not merely ordinary pagination arguments.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new operation's direct exposure is the server's installed release-note index and its response consumers. It adds no network, credential-access, or index-write capability in the inspected call chain. Resource effects are bounded by the selected stored release page rather than arbitrary caller-supplied document content.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional oversized-output path runs from long ingested headings or HTML identifiers, through unconstrained stored metadata, to a caller-selected release-note response. The new tool does not let callers submit that metadata. No affected production record or route granting an ordinary MCP caller ingestion authority was established, so this is a containment concern rather than a verified attacker-controlled exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled version and pagination values are validated before retrieval, and SQL values are bound parameters. Read-only database mode supplies an enforcement boundary independent of descriptive MCP annotations. The python-docs and language predicates select labeled index records; they are not an attestation of upstream content provenance.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new entrypoint converts expected documentation errors into tool errors and wraps unexpected exceptions with an exception-type message rather than returning the exception contents. It introduces no query-time external dependency or persistent recovery state.

Explanation

Issue #33’s main coding objectives are supported by the summary: the new tool reads indexed pages offline, returns paginated structured sections, classifies headings conservatively, caps bodies, and has tests for filtering, pagination, truncation, representative versions, and wire behavior. The available evidence does not establish that missing or unindexed versions use compare_versions’ actionable error naming available versions. It also does not establish that the 3.12 result includes at least 10 nonempty sections, as required by #33.

Budget section metadata before allocating bodies.

If selected section titles and anchors serialize to more than 20,000 characters, body allocation cannot bring the result under the limit because it changes only body. The registered tool can return this oversized result: ingestion stores heading and anchor text without a length bound.

Rechecked exact public head a4f7789deaef0f8f1f20347858f0f4dcc9140d55: the metadata-budget finding is valid and remains blocking. The 11 GitHub checks pass, but they do not establish that this edge case is fixed.

Fresh isolated developer reproduction on 2026-10-04 confirms:

  • The retained large-metadata fixture returns 26,340 serialized characters on this PR. The prepared repair returns two pages of 13,155 and 13,239, with unchanged canonical titles/anchors and no skipped or repeated sections.
  • Seven escaped-metadata sections produce 90,352 characters on this PR; the repair paginates them into seven pages of 12,943–12,946. Filtered pagination also preserves offsets.
  • An individually oversized section produces a bounded, explicit error in the repair; it is neither silently skipped nor truncated. Ordinary-metadata/body-budget results remain byte-for-byte unchanged.
  • Fresh locked sync, lint, type checking, 553 tests, doctor, and the frozen 65-case offline regression pass on the retained repair. The corpus remains at 8/65 retrieval hits and 69 resolved citations, not a generated-answer accuracy measurement.

These lengths measure WhatsNewResult.model_dump_json(), not the MCP transport envelope. The retained 1,603-document index has a recorded hash, but this diagnostic did not independently rebuild/attest its source revisions. One initial diagnostic assertion incorrectly required every short body to be retained; it was corrected to the existing body-allocation contract, with both runs retained. No product test was weakened.

The repair is still unpublished: independent prepublication execution previously failed without a diagnostic sufficient to identify its cause. Developer checks are not independent approval. I have not retried that unexplained failure, resolved this thread, or merged the PR. The existing committed repair is preserved; publication, exact-head verification, review resolution, and SHA-matched merge remain required.

Other review triage: the existing missing-version test asserts that available versions are named; the isolated retained-index check finds 88 Python 3.12 release-note sections. The docstring-coverage suggestion is advisory, separate from the required checks.

The public head is still a4f7789deaef0f8f1f20347858f0f4dcc9140d55; the metadata finding remains valid and unresolved on that head. I resumed the existing smallest repair and had it prepared against current main 44c80f91aea9e133c42f81df2ed83c3c53448faf, preserving current dependency/security/ranking fixes and the 35-hit frozen-corpus ratchet. Prepared final commit: d2b07e5a29414d8ba0987d7d125b7ad9d09539a9 (not published).

Fresh isolated developer reproduction still shows 26,340-character aggregate metadata and 90,352-character escaped metadata on the public service. The retained service fix budgets canonical metadata before bodies, keeps titles/anchors unchanged, paginates without skipping or duplication, and returns a bounded explicit error for an impossible single section. Added escaped/filtered pagination coverage at page limits 1, 2 and 20. Owner static review covered all eight feature files; a docs-only follow-up corrected the README tool count.

Developer checks on code revision 676a506f9d249f6baeb313ac6c73b66100e23381: locked sync/lint/type checks, 609 full tests, 13 focused tests and 5 stdio tests pass. Final d2b07e5 has byte-identical code/tests and only the README word correction; these are not fresh independent final-head results. Retained-index frozen evaluation: 65 cases, 35 hits, zero regressions on the serial run. The first concurrent run failed the EX-004 latency bound (2.367601s while pytest overlapped); a single serial rerun measured 0.092780s. Both results are preserved, with no threshold/baseline changes. Historical index provenance is not a fresh pinned-source build or answer-quality/latency claim.

No publication, independent approval, merge or release. The prior old-base review execution failure is still unexplained; rebuilding atop main does not establish its cause. Main runner recovery and mandatory prepublication/exact-head review remain gates. The prepared bundle and broker-compatible decision are checkpointed. This thread will remain unresolved until the corrected published head is independently verified. Outcome review remains 2026-10-17.

Retained repair refreshed on current main c97600ecc5430044e66500d04192bc61e7df71dc; prepared developer head 372b4258e6e2b084cec6cd5741f78ceb6c9fb1cc is not published, independently verified, merged or released. The exact existing eight-file feature/metadata repair applied unchanged; no dependency, workflow, ops, ranking, storage or frozen-baseline changes.

Fresh isolated developer evidence: locked lint/type checks, 622 full tests, 13 focused tests, 5 stdio tests, doctor/corpus validation; retained-index regression 65 cases/35 hits/no losses. Original 26,340/90,352-character metadata overflow reproduced; repaired pages meet the <=20,000 model-JSON-character bound, filtered pagination at max_sections 1/2/20, unchanged canonical fields and explicit bounded single-item error. Retained-index evidence is not a fresh pinned-source rebuild or a named-client compatibility claim.

Owner decision remains offline, version-scoped official release-note discovery complementary to get_docs. Primary sources re-read 2026-10-10: https://docs.python.org/3.12/whatsnew/3.12.html and https://docs.python.org/3.13/whatsnew/3.13.html . Acceptance requires independent fresh pinned-source verification, preserved pagination/citations/budget and required hosted checks against current main. Non-goals: runtime network/schema/dependency changes, MCP v2, Python 3.15 support or benchmark superiority claims. Review date 2026-10-17; revisit/remove on user-task nonbenefit, metadata/pagination regression or lost retrieval coverage.

The metadata finding remains unresolved pending independent review. Next owner cycle starts mandatory prepublication review of this prepared candidate, then opens a linked successor because the broker prohibits force-updating the old branch. This cycle's 27-minute review-start gate is past; no review was started late. Current-main five workflows pass and App access is active; historical failed review evidence is retained, not relabeled successful.

The retained repair's independent prepublication attempt did not publish a branch. Exact broker candidate: d806910bee72df3c719331f3e7eea5fef171c2f4; base: c97600ecc5430044e66500d04192bc61e7df71dc (same prepared tree as developer head 372b4258e6e2b084cec6cd5741f78ceb6c9fb1cc).

The broker rejected the evidence record because one ref-discovery probe returned exit 1. Bounded diagnostics report reviewer approval, no blockers, and passing mandatory checks, including fresh index/regression evidence; those reports do not override the broker rejection. The expected-absence probe needs a truthful evidence-protocol repair, not a product-code change or a waived gate.

An internal maintenance repair request is queued. Queued is not repaired. No unchanged retry, successor PR, merge, or release occurred. The original metadata finding remains unresolved until a successor earns the required exact-head verification and hosted checks. Current main's five workflows remain successful.

Release scope remains prepared only: compatible merged fixes target 0.3.2, or 0.4.0 if the seventh tool merges. Version/changelog/manifest alignment and independent release gates are still pending.

Vision — automated project maintainer. Resumed this retained repair after the separate v0.3.2 release completed.

Prepared/imported head fb44524610de18eec401ca5fe47afeddb45940d0 on current main 4a2826a1e13d12c4f6439362a82e315bfd1a37f9; tree 80eb74eca4db3811a9d4622c8dd4a484f3289443. The eight-file retained patch is byte-identical; released version/changelog/manifest, dependencies, workflows, storage and frozen benchmark protections are untouched.

Fresh developer-only evidence: locked sync/lint/types, 622 full tests, 13 focused tests, 5 automated stdio tests, doctor and corpus validation passed. Retained-index evaluation: 65 cases, 35 hits, no regression. Public-head metadata overflows reproduced (26,340 / 90,352 characters); repaired pagination stays within the 20,000-character model-JSON bound, preserves canonical metadata and filtered offsets, and returns a bounded error for an oversized single item. Initial preparation failures remain recorded.

Reviewed verifier infrastructure repairs are now installed; prior rejection remains historical, not retroactively approved. This candidate is prepared, not published/independently approved/merged. The current review-start window has passed, so the next scheduled cycle will perform mandatory prepublication review, followed by exact publication-head/current-main App verification and required CI/review gates. A linked successor branch avoids force-updating this stale PR; the original metadata finding remains unresolved until independently proved.

Limitations: retained index is not a fresh pinned-source rebuild; budget excludes the MCP wire envelope; no named-client compatibility claim. Outcome review remains 2026-10-17. No unrelated feature or duplicate implementation was started.

Vision — automated project maintainer. Fresh independent prepublication review found a further real defect in the retained repair: a near-limit section (5,000-character title, 9,800-character anchor) can return an empty body with no promised continuation hint even though metadata fits. The candidate was rejected and was not published or merged.

Independent locked lint/types and full pytest passed (621 passed, 1 skipped), but passing existing tests does not resolve this new finding. One scoped implementer is reproducing it and repairing body/hint budgeting while preserving canonical metadata, the 20,000-character model-JSON cap, and gap-free filtered pagination. If a single section cannot fit useful content plus a necessary continuation, it must fail explicitly rather than return an empty section. No dependency, workflow, frozen benchmark, or released 0.3.2 changes are authorized.

The rejection also noted absent hosted checks/PR before publication. Those are pending at this phase, not waived: separate exact-published-head/current-main independent App verification, required hosted checks and review triage remain mandatory before merge. The original metadata thread remains unresolved. The changed repair will undergo a fresh mandatory prepublication review in the next eligible scheduled window; no unchanged retry or force update.

Vision — automated project maintainer. The changed repair has passed mandatory independent prepublication review and is now published as successor #153 (#153) on current main 4a2826a1e13d12c4f6439362a82e315bfd1a37f9. Exact published head: 44d1c7523e30a258b9d5c82d0b7bdedaf71b7088; it preserves the imported candidate tree.

The successor carries the original metadata-budget finding and the independently discovered near-limit empty-body defect, with regression coverage and phase-specific evidence. Neither this stale head nor its unresolved thread has been force-updated or declared fixed. Required hosted CI/security/product checks, review triage, and separate exact-successor-head/current-main verifier App success remain mandatory before merge. The next eligible verification window is the existing 2026-10-11 00:17 UTC owner cycle. No merge or new release is claimed.

Vision — automated project maintainer. Closing this stale implementation as superseded by #153, now independently verified and merged at 53ef2d59cf7e911ba42d3a186c80741f81734fff. Exact successor head 44d1c7523e30a258b9d5c82d0b7bdedaf71b7088 passed the verifier App check https://github.com/ayhammouda/python-docs-mcp-server/runs/114367806014, all hosted checks, and review triage before SHA-matched broker merge.

The original metadata-overflow finding and later empty-body finding were carried into the successor acceptance. This closure does not assert that this old head was fixed or independently approved. Its review history remains intact. Issue #33 is closed by the successor. Package publication is tracked separately in #154 for coherent 0.4.0; published 0.3.2 is unchanged.
