ADFA-5331: Close JAR index sequences when indexing stops early - #2126
hal-eisen-adfa wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
CombinedJarScanner.scan(Path) yielded symbols from inside jar.use {}.
When BackgroundIndexer abandoned the sequence (job cancelled by a
re-index, project close, or an insert error), the use block never
finished and the JarFile was left to the GC cleaner. The cleaner closes
it on the FinalizerDaemon; on FUSE shared storage that close can fail
with EIO, which is the fatal UncheckedIOException in GlitchTip.
The scan sequence is now AutoCloseable, and BackgroundIndexer closes
any AutoCloseable sequence when the job ends, catching close errors on
the indexer thread.

- F29: a finished job removes only its own activeJobs entry, not a replacement's. - F30: launch LAZY, register, then start, so a fast job cannot finish before it is tracked. - F34: iterator() after close() yields nothing and opens no JAR. - F36: JarSymbols tracks its one open JarFile in a volatile field, not a queue. - F37: JvmSymbolIndex.indexSource KDoc documents the close and warns against wrapping. - F38: close failures catch Exception only, and the activeJobs removal runs before the close.

- F31: CombinedJarScanner.scan(Path) returns a Flow that holds the JAR in use {}, so wrapping it (e.g. filter {}) can no longer skip the close; the AutoCloseable cast is gone.
- F32: cancellation now stops the scan at the next emit.
- F33: BackgroundIndexer collects in batches and flushes the last batch even when the flow fails after its last emit (e.g. EIO on the JAR close).

The job body's finally removed the activeJobs entry, but a job cancelled before its body runs never reaches that finally, so it stayed tracked. Register invokeOnCompletion after storing the job instead; it runs for every completion, including cancel-before-start, and runs at once if the job already finished, so CoroutineStart.LAZY is no longer needed.

No CRITICAL or IMPORTANT findings. The fix holds: the JAR now closes on completion, failure and cancellation, and the regression tests cover each path.
MINOR
- BackgroundIndexer.kt:141 - partial-batch flush is not limited to post-last-emit failures (latent)
- CombinedJarScanner.kt:71 - JarSymbolScanner/KotlinMetadataScanner still swallow cancellation from emit (no callers)
NITPICK - 3 inline, not listed
Prior round
- CodeRabbit, BackgroundIndexer.kt:139 (job not untracked if cancelled before start): fixed. Untracking moved to
invokeOnCompletionwithremove(sourceId, job); covered byjob cancelled before its body runs is not left tracked.
Verdict rule: CLAUDE.md gates QA on no critical, high or medium findings; none here.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: The partial-batch flush runs on any flow failure, not only a failure after the last emit.
Unreachable today: CombinedJarScanner catches per-entry read/parse errors, entries() walks the in-memory central directory, and an insertAll failure clears the batch first, so only the JAR close can fail here. A future provider that fails mid-stream would get its partial rows saved, isCached() would then return true, and JvmLibraryIndexingService (skipIfExists = true) would never retry that JAR.
Fix: flush only when the failure came after the flow finished emitting (e.g. track that in the flow, or flush in onCompletion), or narrow the comment and contract to say partial rows are kept on any failure.

| // emit stays outside the try so cancellation is not swallowed. |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
MINOR: The sibling scanners still call emit inside try { } catch (e: Exception), the pattern this line avoids.
The defect is in JarSymbolScanner.kt:70-76 and KotlinMetadataScanner.kt:88-92 (and their VirtualFile overloads), outside this diff. Neither has a caller today, so it is unreachable. Once one is collected, a cancelled job's CancellationException from emit is logged at debug and the loop keeps reading the rest of the JAR, breaking Flow exception transparency. The sibling sweep in the PR body lists both as fine.
Fix: move emit out of the try in both, as done here.
| error = e | ||

| error?.let { throw it } |

NITPICK: If the final flush throws after the flow already failed, the original error (e.g. the EIO) is lost.
Only the insertAll exception reaches log.error and IndexingEvent.Failed, so whoever reads the log sees the secondary failure, not the cause.
Fix: catch the flush failure and addSuppressed it onto error when there is one.

NITPICK: scan(VirtualFile) still returns a Sequence and has no callers.
It can no longer be passed to indexSource, and anyone adding a resource to it would bring back the abandoned-sequence leak this PR removes.
Fix: delete it, or convert it to flow {} like the Path overload.

NITPICK: The test counts every open descriptor in the test JVM, so an unrelated fd opened by another thread between the two openFds() calls fails it with the fix in place.
Not reproduced; the window is small. A deterministic alternative is asserting on a closed flag, as BackgroundIndexerTest.ClosingFlow does, or checking the jar can be deleted/renamed on a platform that locks open files.

Approving. The two MINOR and three NITPICK comments in the previous review are non-blocking; address them here or in a follow-up.

Fixes the fatal
UncheckedIOException: close failed: EIOthrown fromZipFile$CleanableResource.runon the FinalizerDaemon. In the 5 days before this PR it had 40 events from 30 users across GlitchTip issues CODEONTHEGO-6, -1A, -17, -6P, -TP and -T4, and it still happens on C-r-1006-1153.Cause
CombinedJarScanner.scan(Path)yielded symbols from insidejar.use {}in asequence {}.BackgroundIndexerstops consuming the sequence when its job is cancelled (a re-index of the same jar after a build, or closing the project) or wheninsertAllthrows. An abandoned sequence never finishes itsuseblock, so theJarFilewas left to the GC cleaner. The cleaner closes it on the FinalizerDaemon. On FUSE shared storage (/storage/emulated/0/CodeOnTheGoProjects) that close can return EIO, the exception is uncaught, and the FinalizerDaemon thread dies. The earlier fixes (#852, #1222) went into zipfs2, which never creates a
java.util.zip.ZipFile, so they couldn't affect this trace. The swallow inIDEApplication.isNonFatalGcCleanupFailure(#957) doesn't stop the fatal report either: Sentry 8.29 installs its handler after ours, records the FATAL event, and only then delegates to us.Fix: index JARs through a Flow
CombinedJarScanner.scan(Path)now returnsFlow<JvmSymbol>built asflow { JarFile(...).use { ... emit(symbol) } }, the same shape asJarSymbolScanner.scan(Path). A collector can't abandon a flow: on cancellation or a downstream error, emitthrows inside the builder, sousealways closes the JAR. Operators such as.filter {}keep that guarantee.BackgroundIndexer.indexSource,indexSourcesandJvmSymbolIndex.indexSourcetake aFlow. Collection runs inwithContext(Dispatchers.IO)(noflowOn, so there's no thread hop per element) and inserts in batches of 500 through the unchangedIndex.insertAll(Sequence).Index,SQLiteIndexandInMemoryIndexare untouched.emitchecks for cancellation, so a cancelled job stops at the next symbol instead of reading the rest of the jar. That also covers the first suggested fix in ADFA-4993 (freeze on close while android.jar indexes); the freeze hasn't been re-measured on a device. This went through one revision. The first version made the sequence
AutoCloseableand had the indexer close it with(entries as? AutoCloseable)?.close(). Review pointed out that a wrapped sequence silently skips that close, so it was replaced by the Flow design.Review follow-ups
