fix(core): install nested extension plugins at runtime - #3236
Fixes#3175. Registering an extension at runtime previously recorded its nested blockNoteExtensions but installed only the parent plugin set. For CollaborationExtension, this left the sync plugins uninstalled, so local edits never reached the shared Yjs document and could disappear on reload.
Install plugins and mount hooks for every newly registered nested extension.
Order runtime plugins by their dependencies, including sync-before-cursor initialization, and preserve that order after remounting.
Remove obsolete parent dependency declarations during replacement.
Run cleanup after plugin removal and guard pending mount hooks so reentrant registrations/removals are not overwritten.
Preserve existing plugin-state resets used by version previews, factory lookups, and registrations made inside factories.
The candidate-registry rollback refactor was removed after review found it introduced lookup and reentrant-registration regressions. This PR does not add transactional rollback guarantees or support runtime schema/input-rule changes.
Stack
Stacked on #3229. The base is enhance-version-history-sidebar-navigation-and-restore; merge that PR first, then retarget this PR to main.
Restacked after rebasing #3229 onto current main. All version-history fixes now belong to #3229; this PR's diff contains only the runtime nested-extension registration fix.
Supersedes #3178 with the fix applied on top of the current extension lifecycle and version-preview behavior. Close#3178 when this replacement lands.
Verification
The rebased feat!: improve version history authors and keyboard navigation #3229 base passed 135 targeted unit tests and 416 Docker browser tests, with 4 expected browser-specific skips. Fresh CI on this restacked head will validate the runtime-extension changes together with that base.
Earlier verification during development:
457 passing unit tests across the extension manager, both collaboration bindings, and versioning, with 20 expected failures and 6 skipped tests.
Generic nested-plugin initialization and rebuild regression tests, plus lifecycle tests consolidated into ExtensionManager.test.ts using jsdom.
Red-first collision regression from review: duplicate plugin keys must be rejected, not silently remove an unrelated installed plugin.
Type-aware lint, formatting, and git diff --check passed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved runtime extension mounting and cleanup when extensions are added, replaced, removed, or the editor is remounted.
Preserved plugin dependency order and unrelated plugins during updates, while preventing conflicting plugins from replacing existing ones.
Handled extensions removed during another extension’s mount or cleanup more consistently.
Included runtime plugin registrations made during extension setup and cleared obsolete dependency relationships when replacing extensions.
Runtime extensions are not mounted in headless editors.
Checkpoint deletion now removes the row from history immediately and returns the displayed selection to the current version. Clearing a checkpoint’s name leaves its content in history.
Changes made while viewing a version preview no longer trigger change notifications; restoring a version notifies listeners of the restored content.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Runtime extension registration now collects nested extensions and rebuilds plugins in dependency order. Mounting and cleanup behavior also changes. Versioning changes preview notifications and restore handling, and updates history when snapshot content is confirmed deleted.

Summary
Registration and extension resolution packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/index.ts, packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/ExtensionManager.node.test.ts
Registration collects nested extensions. Resolution and replacement use registered instances. Tests cover factory access, nested registration, and plugin-key collisions.
Runtime plugins use dependency priority. Replacement filters existing plugins by reference or key, then applies the ordered plugin set. Tests cover dependency order and replacement across remounts.
Mounting and cleanup packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/index.ts, packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/ExtensionManager.test.ts, packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/ExtensionManager.browser.test.ts
Mounting skips headless editors and extensions that are no longer registered. Tests cover cleanup, re-registration, removal during mounting, and remounting. The browser lifecycle test was removed.
Change callbacks are suppressed while a version preview is open. Restore closes previews with a restore reason, and restored live content can be published as a change. Tests cover preview transitions, failed acquisition, and restore behavior.
Removal event and state reconciliation packages/core/src/extensions/Versioning/createVersioning.ts, packages/core/src/extensions/Versioning/versioningState.ts, packages/core/src/extensions/Versioning/types.ts, packages/core/src/extensions/Versioning/createVersioning.test.ts, packages/react/src/components/Versioning/VersioningSidebar.browser.test.tsx
Removal checks content availability for selected and unselected snapshots. Confirmed-deleted snapshots are removed from history. Tests check immediate row removal without a history reload; the storage contract documents the behavior.

Explanation
The title names the primary change: runtime installation of plugins from nested extensions, which the changeset implements in ExtensionManager and related tests. It uses the conventional commit form, is 54 characters and 7 words, and avoids vague wording. It omits the versioning and dependency-ordering changes, which are secondary to the main fix.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#3175, #3178] ExtensionManager.replaceExtension now registers nested blockNoteExtensions, collects their plugins, and installs them at runtime. getRuntimePlugins applies dependency ordering, including sync before cursor, and reuses that order during remounts. Runtime registration now mounts extensions and removal runs cleanup. Tests cover collaboration-related nested plugins, ordering, remounts, cleanup, replacement, and reentrant lifecycle cases.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is substantially complete. It explains the fix, rationale, major changes, scope limitations, stacking context, and verification results. It does not use the template headings exactly and omits the checklist, screenshots/video section, and additional notes section, but these omissions are non-critical because the required technical context is present.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR changes versioning behavior in createVersioning.ts, Versioning.ts, inMemoryVersioning.ts, versioningState.ts, types.ts, EventManager.ts, and related tests. These changes remove deleted snapshots from cached history and alter preview, restore, and change-notification behavior. They do not implement runtime nested-plugin installation or extension lifecycle behavior required by [#3175] or [#3178].
Resolution
Remove the unrelated versioning implementation, type, and test changes from this PR, or link them to a directly applicable coding requirement and separate that work into the version-history change.

A failed plugin update leaves the registry changed and breaks later plugin rebuilds.
addExtension, runtimeExtensions.add and getProsemirrorPluginsFromExtension commit the new extension to the registry before updatePlugins runs. reconfigure can then throw, for example when a plugin with a different instance but an existing key is registered. The new test at Lines 108-121 of ExtensionManager.node.test.ts covers this case.
After the throw, the new extension stays in this.extensions, runtimeExtensions and extensionPlugins. getRuntimePlugins() still returns its plugin. Two paths then rebuild with the colliding plugin and throw again:
Tiptap remounts, which read blocknote-runtime-extensions through getRuntimePlugins.
Every later registerExtension, replaceExtension or unregisterExtension.
The test only checks the state right after the throw. It never calls rebuildPlugins afterwards, so it does not detect this.
The PR says it does not add transactional rollback. A narrow cleanup for newly registered extensions is still worth adding. It would remove them from the registry when updatePlugins throws and then rethrow. Without it, one bad registration can make the editor unusable.

Abort removed extension controllers when reconfiguration fails.
replaceExtension removes the controller, then calls updatePlugins before aborting it. A replacement with a plugin key that conflicts with an unrelated installed plugin makes ProseMirror reconfiguration throw. The removed extension's mount cleanup then does not run. Cleanup for newly registered extensions cannot clean the removed controller.

Reconcile selection when deletion empties history.
If showCurrentVersion is false and remove(id) deletes the last selected checkpoint, snapshotRemoved empties history. The subsequent select({ type: "current" }) returns unavailable, so displayed still references the deleted checkpoint. Handle the empty-history case before selecting a replacement, for example by returning to the frozen current view. The public storage contract permits this configuration; the default sidebar does not offer Delete on its Current row, but callers can invoke remove directly. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Cancel replacement history reads after confirming deletion.
remove cancels the current history request before awaiting getContent. A new list or dirty loadMore request can start during that await. If it returns the deleted snapshot after snapshotRemoved filters the history, historyLoaded can merge it back. This violates the immediate-removal contract.

Handle a rejected getContent after a successful removal.
remove now calls storage.getContent(id, active.lifetime.signal) for every removed ID. Before this change, it called getContent only for referenced IDs. The storage has already removed the snapshot at this point. If the session closes while getContent is pending, a remote storage can reject with an abort error. remove then rejects, although the removal succeeded.
Catch the rejection. When the session signal is aborted, return { status: "done" }.
Also, the existing review comment about an empty history still applies. With showCurrentVersion === false, select({ type: "current" }) returns unavailable after the last row is removed. displayed then still references the deleted checkpoint.

What this fixes
Fixes #3175. Registering an extension at runtime previously recorded its nested
blockNoteExtensionsbut installed only the parent plugin set. ForCollaborationExtension, this left the sync plugins uninstalled, so local edits never reached the shared Yjs document and could disappear on reload. The candidate-registry rollback refactor was removed after review found it introduced lookup and reentrant-registration regressions. This PR does not add transactional rollback guarantees or support runtime schema/input-rule changes.
Stack
Stacked on #3229. The base is
enhance-version-history-sidebar-navigation-and-restore; merge that PR first, then retarget this PR tomain.Restacked after rebasing #3229 onto current
main. All version-history fixes now belong to #3229; this PR's diff contains only the runtime nested-extension registration fix.Supersedes #3178 with the fix applied on top of the current extension lifecycle and version-preview behavior. Close #3178 when this replacement lands.
