Check nnUNet plans network names against allowed modules - #9237
get_network_from_nnunet_plans() and ModelnnUNetWrapper (used by get_nnunet_monai_predictor()) build the network from a bundle's plans.json. nnUNet resolves network_class_name, and every keyword argument listed in _kw_requires_import, by dotted name with pydoc.locate and then calls them. Nothing restricted which names a plans file could reference.
This PR adds a check that runs before nnUNet is called:
network_class_name and each imported keyword argument must sit under an allowed module prefix, by default DEFAULT_NNUNET_NETWORK_MODULES = ("dynamic_network_architectures", "torch.nn"). The prefix is checked before anything is imported.
If the name can be imported, it must be a torch.nn.Module subclass. Names that can't be imported are left to nnUNet's existing fallback, which only searches inside dynamic_network_architectures.
A new allowed_network_modules argument on get_network_from_nnunet_plans(), get_nnunet_monai_predictor() and ModelnnUNetWrapper lets users load a trusted custom architecture.
Standard nnUNet plans (PlainConvUNet, ResidualEncoderUNet, with torch.nn conv, norm, dropout and nonlinearity ops) load as before.
Tests
New tests/apps/nnunet/test_nnunet_bundle_network_spec.py:
unit tests for the check: accepted defaults, rejected classes and imported arguments, names under an allowed prefix that are not Module classes, and custom allowed modules;
with nnunetv2 installed, end-to-end tests of get_network_from_nnunet_plans() that build a real PlainConvUNet and check that a disallowed class or imported argument is rejected without being called.
Run locally with nnunetv2 2.8.1 / torch 2.15 CPU: 10 passed. Without nnunetv2, the end-to-end class is skipped.
Types of changes
Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
Before building a network from nnUNet plans, require the network class
and every keyword argument that nnUNet imports by name to live under an
allowed module prefix (dynamic_network_architectures and torch.nn by
default) and to be torch.nn.Module subclasses. Add an
allowed_network_modules argument to get_network_from_nnunet_plans,
get_nnunet_monai_predictor and ModelnnUNetWrapper so trusted custom
architectures can still be loaded.

Walkthrough
The change validates nnU-Net network specifications before construction in the wrapper and plans-based loader. By default, names must use the dynamic_network_architectures or torch.nn prefix. Resolved names must be torch.nn.Module subclasses, and non-null imported arguments are checked. Callers can provide custom allowed prefixes. The default prefixes are exported and documented. Tests cover validation rules and construction paths.
No merge-blocking issue was established in the network validation changes.

Add a test for the wrapper’s validation path.
These end-to-end tests exercise only get_network_from_nnunet_plans. Add a wrapper or predictor-factory test that supplies a disallowed network name and confirms the trainer does not build it. Also test forwarding of a trusted custom prefix. The existing integration caller supplies no new prefix, so it does not cover that path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Thanks @coderabbitai. Addressed in 5d871bc: TestModelWrapperNetworkSpec covers ModelnnUNetWrapper (a disallowed class is rejected and the trainer never builds it; a custom prefix is only accepted when passed in allowed_network_modules) and checks that get_nnunet_monai_predictor forwards allowed_network_modules. These run when nnunetv2 is installed; locally with nnunetv2 2.8.1 all 14 tests pass.

Document the new test methods.
_wrap, setUp, tearDown, and the new test methods lack docstrings. Add concise docstrings. For _wrap, document its arguments, return value, and applicable exception in Google style. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, “Docstrings should be present for all definition” and describe variables, returns, and raised exceptions in Google style.

Add a wrapper-level test for a disallowed imported argument.
ModelnnUNetWrapper runs the imported-argument check before it builds the network. No test runs that check through the wrapper. test_disallowed_network_is_not_built uses the disallowed class numpy.savez, so it covers only the class-name check. If the wrapper stopped passing imported arguments to the check, the wrapper tests would still pass.

@garciadias Thanks for adding the wrapper rejection, custom-prefix, and predictor-forwarding tests in 5d871bc3. That covers the requested cases. Thanks for confirming that all 14 tests pass locally with nnunetv2 2.8.1.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
Thanks @coderabbitai. Both nitpicks are addressed in 7b8a85f: setUp, tearDown, _wrap (Google-style Args/Returns/Raises) and the test methods now have docstrings, and test_disallowed_imported_argument_is_not_built checks that a disallowed nonlin is rejected by the wrapper before the trainer builds the network. 15 tests pass locally with nnunetv2 2.8.1.
