Support batched inputs in gradient-based saliency maps - #9222
VanillaGrad.get_grad rejected inputs with more than one image ("expect batch size of 1"). The reason sits one level down: ModelWithHooks.class_score selected the class with logits[:, class_idx].squeeze(), which with one class index per image returns a (B, B) slice instead of one score per image, so the summed score and the resulting gradients mixed classes across the batch.
Changes:
ModelWithHooks.class_score accepts an int (the same class for every image) or a tensor with one class index per image and returns one score per image (logits[arange(B), idx], or torch.gather when a class is given per location); a 1-D index applies to all trailing dimensions of the logits, and an index of the wrong length raises ValueError. ModelWithHooks.class_idx is typed int | Tensor | None accordingly.
VanillaGrad.get_grad no longer rejects batches, so VanillaGrad, SmoothGrad, GuidedBackpropGrad and GuidedBackpropSmoothGrad accept (B, C, ...) inputs. The model already runs in evaluation mode and the selected scores are summed, so for networks without cross-batch interactions each image gets the map it would get alone. SmoothGrad scales its noise with the intensity range of each image instead of the whole batch, which keeps the batched result equal in distribution to the per-image one.
GradCAMpp.compute_map reshapes the class score to (B, 1, ..., 1) before multiplying it with the gradient. On dev that product only broadcasts when the batch size happens to equal the last feature-map dimension (the existing tests use batch 2 on feature maps whose last dimension is 2); batch 3 raises RuntimeError: The size of tensor a (3) must match the size of tensor b (16) at non-singleton dimension 3.
Behaviour for batch size 1 is unchanged for models with non-spatial logits (the per-image score is now shape (1,) rather than 0-d, which only matters to code reading ModelWithHooks.score directly). One corner case changes: GradCAM++ on a model with spatial logits at batch 1 previously worked only with an int class index; the score is now averaged per image before the reshape (covered by test_spatial_logits, added after review). For batch > 1, GradCAM/GradCAMpp with class_idx=None or a per-image tensor now use each image's own class; the existing test_vis_gradcam.py did not catch the mixing because it compares class_idx=None with the argmax tensor, and both went through the same slice.
Measured on dev (874343b) and on this branch, CPU, torch 2.14.1, a small 2D DenseNet, random input:
GradCAM(...)(x, class_idx=tensor([0, 2])) vs the two per-image calls
max abs difference 0.68
3.6e-7
Tests: batch shapes added to tests/integration/test_vis_gradbased.py for every gradient-based class; test_batch_matches_single_sample compares batched and per-image maps for VanillaGrad, GuidedBackpropGrad, GradCAM and GradCAMpp with index given as None, an int and a per-image tensor; SmoothGrad with zero noise equals VanillaGrad on a batch; a wrong-length index raises; ModelWithHooks.class_score is unit-tested directly, including logits with spatial dimensions. docs/source/visualize.rst uses automodule, so the docstring changes need no rst edit.
This supersedes #8573 (same idea, one score per image selected inside class_score; waiting on typing fixes since 2025-10-29); thanks to @einsyang723 for the first version.
Disclosure: the implementation, the tests and this description were prepared with Claude Code (Anthropic), which also ran the measurements, tests and lint described above on my Windows machine (CPU only); the Linux runtests.sh checks were not run locally.

VanillaGrad.get_grad rejected inputs with more than one image because
ModelWithHooks.class_score selected the class with logits[:, class_idx],
which for one class index per image returns a (B, B) slice and mixes
classes across the batch. class_score now accepts an int (same class for
every image) or one index per image and returns one score per image (indexing
one logit per image; torch.gather when a class is given per location),
raising ValueError for an index of the wrong length. The
batch check is removed, so VanillaGrad, SmoothGrad, GuidedBackpropGrad
and GuidedBackpropSmoothGrad accept (B, C, ...) inputs; SmoothGrad
scales its noise with the intensity range of each image. GradCAMpp
reshapes the class score to (B, 1, ..., 1) before multiplying it with
the gradient; on dev that product only broadcast when the batch size
equalled the last feature-map dimension. Results for batch size 1 are
unchanged.
Tests compare batched maps with per-image maps for VanillaGrad,
GuidedBackpropGrad, GradCAM and GradCAMpp with the index given as None,
an int and a per-image tensor, and unit-test class_score directly.

VanillaGrad and GuidedBackpropGrad accept batched inputs. SmoothGrad computes noise scales separately for each image. Class activation maps support shared, per-image, and per-location class indices. GradCAM++ averages scores per batch element before weighting gradients. Tests compare batched results with per-image results and check invalid index lengths.
The batch-visualization changes have no established merge-blocking issue. The remaining test-helper documentation gaps are minor.

Explanation
Issue #7334 requests batch support for saliency maps. VanillaGrad and related gradient methods now accept batched inputs. ModelWithHooks.class_score selects one class score per image, supports shared and per-image indices, and validates index length. SmoothGrad uses per-image noise scaling. GradCAMpp handles batched and spatial logits. Added tests cover batch shapes, single-image equivalence, index forms, invalid lengths, spatial logits, and mode restoration.

Explanation
The source changes, tests, and docstrings directly support issue #7334. Per-image noise scaling, score reshaping, and mode restoration support correct batched saliency behavior. No unrelated change is established by the supplied evidence.

ModelWithHooks.__call__ restores the previous training mode in a
finally block, so the ValueError raised for a class index of the wrong
length, or any other error in the forward or backward pass, no longer
leaves a training model in evaluation mode.
For spatial logits (B, C, H, W) the class score holds one value per
location, and the (B, 1, ..., 1) reshape added to GradCAMpp raised a
RuntimeError. GradCAMpp now averages the score of each image first.
exp(score) only scales the map of each image by a positive factor, and
the mean keeps that factor finite where a sum over many locations
would overflow. On dev such models worked only for batch size 1 with
an integer class index and a target layer with the spatial size of the
output, where the score map was multiplied elementwise with the
gradient; that case now uses the per-image score as well.
Tests: a wrong-length index leaves the model in training or evaluation
mode as it was; GradCAM and GradCAMpp on a network with spatial logits
give finite maps equal to the per-image maps for class_idx None, an
int and a per-image tensor; SmoothGrad with positive noise scales the
noise of each image with its own intensity range, a check that fails
with one range for the whole batch.
