feat: authenticate with a private key (private_key_jwt) instead of a client secret (CON-211) - #268
Conversation
…client secret
Clients registered with a public key set `privateKey` (PKCS#8 PEM or JWK)
instead of `clientSecret`, with an optional `keyId`:
PipedreamClient.builder().clientId(id).privateKey(pem).projectId(p).build()
The SDK signs a short-lived client assertion (RFC 7523) for each token
request: ES256 or RS256 inferred from the key, iss/sub = client ID, aud =
the API's issuer (the base URL's origin), a 60s lifetime and a random
single-use jti. Token caching is unchanged. Token requests bypass the
retry interceptor (which would resend the same assertion) and are retried
with a newly signed assertion instead. Works for PipedreamClient and
AsyncPipedreamClient. clientSecret and privateKey can't be combined;
PipedreamClient.builder() also reads PIPEDREAM_PRIVATE_KEY and
PIPEDREAM_KEY_ID, and explicitly set credentials win over environment ones.
JDK only (Java 8 compatible), no new dependencies. The token request is
built by the custom supplier, so it doesn't depend on the generated
CreateOAuthTokenOpts staged builder, which changes when Fern regenerates
from the updated spec. Version 2.2.0.

WalkthroughThe Java SDK adds private-key JWT authentication for synchronous and asynchronous clients. The change adds assertion signing, token retrieval and caching, and OAuth request fields for client assertions. The SDK version and published dependency examples change to 2.2.0. With client_assertion fields in the token request spec, Fern regenerates OAuthTokenSupplier with a six-argument constructor (adding clientAssertionType and clientAssertion), which broke compilation of the custom builders that call it. Take the generated OAuthTokenSupplier and CreateOAuthTokenOpts now (identical to a local Fern generation from the updated spec) and pass null assertion fields from the client-secret call sites, so the SDK builds both before and after the regeneration. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Map malformed PEM bodies to the documented privateKey error.
The header check passes when a PEM has a valid BEGIN PRIVATE KEY marker but a corrupted or truncated body. In that case, Base64.getDecoder().decode(body) throws IllegalArgumentException. The constructor rethrows every IllegalArgumentException unchanged. The caller therefore gets the message "Illegal base64 character …" instead of the "privateKey must be …" guidance. The rejectsKeysItCannotUse test does not cover a corrupted body inside a valid PKCS#8 header.
🛡️ Proposed fix
- PKCS8EncodedKeySpec spec = new PKCS8EncodedKeySpec(Base64.getDecoder().decode(body));

+ "privateKey must be an unencrypted PKCS#8 PEM private key or a JWK (JSON); the PEM body is not valid Base64",
+ e);
+ }
+ PKCS8EncodedKeySpec spec = new PKCS8EncodedKeySpec(der);Based on learnings: "decode the Base64 body before accepting the key … Ensure malformed or truncated key bodies … are rejected with proper error handling, and add regression tests for truncated/malformed inputs."

Patches with unresolved conflicts (1): - patch-865b33f6: feat: authenticate with a private key (private_key_jwt) instead of a client secret (CON-211) (#268) Run `fern-replay resolve` to apply these customizations.
Linear: CON-211
What
API clients can now authenticate with a private key instead of a client secret (RFC 7523
private_key_jwt). The client is created in the Pipedream UI with Authentication: Public key; you register the public key with Pipedream and keep the private key.Everything else works exactly as it does with a client secret.
AsyncPipedreamClient.builder()has the same methods. The SDK does all of the client assertion work:issandsubare the client ID.audis the API's issuer identifier, the origin of the base URL (https://api.pipedream.com, or your custombaseUrl). It also setsiat, a 60-secondexp, a random single-usejti, andtyp: client-authentication+jwt.RetryInterceptor, which would resend the same body, and the API rejects a reused assertion. The supplier retries 408, 429, 5xx and network errors itself, each time with a newly signed assertion.401 invalid_clientisn't retried.keyId(...): sent as the JWTkidheader. A JWK's ownkidis used automatically. The API doesn't require it.PipedreamClient.builder()readsPIPEDREAM_PRIVATE_KEYandPIPEDREAM_KEY_ID, alongsidePIPEDREAM_CLIENT_SECRET.clientSecretandprivateKeytogether throwsIllegalStateException, and so does having both env vars set with neither set explicitly. Explicitly set credentials win over the environment.Key formats: unencrypted PKCS#8 PEM (
-----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY-----), the formatopenssl genpkey/pkcs8 -topk8and the docs produce, or a JWK. Other PEM formats (PKCS#1, SEC1) get an error with theopenssl pkcs8 -topk8 -nocryptconversion command. MSAL for Java has the same requirement.Changes
