fix(tls): let caller options win over the browser profile - #29
tls(userAgent, httpsOpts) copies the caller options and then assigns ciphers, signatureAlgorithms, ecdhCurve, minVersion and maxVersion from the browser profile unconditionally, so the profile overwrites whatever the caller asked for.
consttls=require('https-tls')tls(chromeUserAgent,{minVersion: 'TLSv1.2'}).minVersion// 'TLSv1' (caller asked for TLSv1.2)
The got hook bails out when the caller sets ciphers, signatureAlgorithms, minVersion or maxVersion, but not ecdhCurve, so https: { ecdhCurve: 'X25519' } was replaced by the Chrome curve list. A caller secureProtocol got profile minVersion/maxVersion added, and Node throws ERR_TLS_PROTOCOL_VERSION_CONFLICT on that combination.
Root cause
src/index.js treated the profile as authoritative instead of as defaults: plain = assignment after Object.assign({}, httpsOpts).
Fix
Each profile field is assigned with ??=, so it only fills fields the caller left unset (undefined or null). got 12+ normalizes https with every key present and undefined, so this keeps the profile working there.
When the caller sets secureProtocol, the profile minVersion/maxVersion are skipped, since secureProtocol already pins the version.
The caller object is still copied, never mutated.
Behavior changes
Caller ciphers, signatureAlgorithms, ecdhCurve, minVersion and maxVersion are kept instead of overwritten. Set-but-falsy values ('', 0, false) count as set and pass through to Node.
With secureProtocol set, the result has no minVersion/maxVersion (it used to throw when passed to Node).
Callers who pass nothing, or only unrelated options, get the same values in the same key order as before.
hook.js is unchanged: it still skips the profile entirely when the caller sets any of the four fields it checks. Only the ecdhCurve-only case changes, through src/index.js.
No snapshots changed.
How it was tested
New tests in test/index.js and test/hook.js. Against master's src/index.js:
✘ [fail]: hook › keeps a caller ecdhCurve
✘ [fail]: index › caller options win over the browser profile
✘ [fail]: index › a caller secureProtocol is not mixed with the profile versions
- 'X25519:prime256v1:secp384r1'
+ 'X25519'
- 'TLSv1'
+ 'TLSv1.2'
3 tests failed
On this branch npm test (lint + 25 tests) passes, with src/index.js at 100% coverage. Two more tests (unset values fall back, caller object not mutated) pin the semantics and pass on both.
Benchmark, tls options top 100 user agents, base and head interleaved locally on the same machine (median of 7 runs each): base 104.4 / 104.8 / 105.6 ms, head 103.5 / 104.5 / 105.5 ms. No change. The CI benchmark comment has the same-runner numbers.
Critic
A cold critic confirmed the tests fail with the fix reverted and could not break it. It captured real ClientHellos: a caller minVersion: 'TLSv1.3' now offers 3 suites instead of 15, and a caller cipher list is sent as given. It also ran all 32 hook combinations and a real got 14 beforeRequest hook. It found the secureProtocol conflict, which is fixed here. Its other main finding is left for review: hook.js and src/index.js now disagree on what "caller wins" means. The hook drops the whole profile when one field is set, while the function merges. Making the hook merge too would change hook output for every caller who sets any TLS field, which goes beyond this bug.
Not fixed: the 3DES note
The audit also said unknown user agents get a Safari profile that offers 3DES. The Safari (and Firefox) cipher strings do name DES-CBC3-SHA, ECDHE-ECDSA-DES-CBC3-SHA and ECDHE-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA. But no supported Node version puts them on the wire. A raw TCP server parsing the ClientHello from tls.connect with the Safari profile (googlebot, curl/8.0 and a real Safari UA) found zero 3DES suites on Node 18.20.8 (OpenSSL 3.0.16), 22.23.2 (3.6.5) and 24.16.0 (3.5.6). tls.getCiphers() has no 3DES entry on any of them. So there is no weak cipher to remove, and no fix is shipped for it.
Medium Risk
Changes TLS option merging used for outbound HTTPS fingerprinting; incorrect behavior could affect handshake compatibility, though semantics are heavily tested and default-only paths stay the same.
Overview
Fixes a bug where browser TLS profile fields overwrote caller-supplied https options instead of acting as defaults.
Profile values for ciphers, signatureAlgorithms, ecdhCurve, minVersion, and maxVersion are now applied only when the caller left them unset (null/undefined via ??=). Explicit caller values—including empty strings—are preserved. When the caller sets secureProtocol, profile minVersion/maxVersion are no longer added, avoiding Node’s ERR_TLS_PROTOCOL_VERSION_CONFLICT. If only maxVersion is set and the browser’s default minimum would exceed it, minimumWithin clamps the applied minimum to that maximum.
The got hook still skips decoration when certain fields are pre-set; the ecdhCurve-only case now keeps the caller’s curve through the updated merge logic. New tests cover precedence, version clamping, secureProtocol, immutability of caller options, and hook behavior.

Bug Fixes
Browser-specific HTTPS defaults now fill in only settings that are missing, preserving values supplied by callers—including empty strings.
TLS version defaults are applied only when no secure protocol is specified, and minimum and maximum versions are handled independently. This keeps existing connection settings intact while still providing browser-specific fallbacks where needed.
tls(userAgent, httpsOpts) copied the caller options and then assigned
ciphers, signatureAlgorithms, ecdhCurve, minVersion and maxVersion from the
browser profile unconditionally. A caller asking for minVersion TLSv1.2 with
a Chrome user agent got TLSv1 back, and through the got hook a caller
ecdhCurve was replaced, since the hook only bails out for the other four.
The profile is a set of defaults, so each field is now assigned only when
the caller left it unset (undefined or null). got 12+ normalizes https
options with every key present and undefined, so treating undefined as
unset keeps the profile working there. A caller secureProtocol already pins
the TLS version, and Node throws ERR_TLS_PROTOCOL_VERSION_CONFLICT when it
is combined with minVersion or maxVersion, so the profile versions are
skipped in that case. The caller object is still copied, never mutated.

Walkthrough
For recognized browsers, TLS profile defaults now apply only when the corresponding caller options are nullish. TLS version bounds are applied only when secureProtocol is nullish, and each bound is checked independently.
Changes: TLS option precedence
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Option precedence and validation src/index.js, test/hook.js, test/index.js
The configuration preserves non-nullish caller TLS options and applies profile version bounds only when secureProtocol is nullish. Tests cover caller-option precedence, fallback values, option mutation, and secure-context creation.
Some direct calls using older TLS versions cannot connect unless callers also set a compatible minimum. This is a bounded compatibility issue.

signatureAlgorithms, ecdhCurve, minVersion, and maxVersion could be
overwritten, or skip a null, without a failing test. Empty strings are
caller values, and a null secureProtocol is unset. The hook also skips
decoration when a profile field is already set.
