Adds the canonical narrowed design-principles block from zackees/ci.yml docs/policy-rust.md ("Design principles, narrowed", forge-ci/ci.yml#163) to CLAUDE.md, the real agent doc (CODEX.md defers to it), placed after "Core Principles" and before "Key Constraints". Agent/review guidance only: no rule ID, not enforced by ci-lint. Docs-only (CLAUDE.md); no workflows, no code. local-gate.toml is mode = "shadow" (optional local proof), so the gate was not run for this docs-only change.

Adopted / adapted / dropped (forge-ci/ci.yml#163)

The block is the canonical text; "Adapted" means the wording was changed or bound to something this repo already has.

# Baseline rule Decision Reason (this repo)
1 rg before adding a resolver/guard Adopted fbuild already fights path/cache-helper drift with Dylints (ban_raw_fbuild_path, ban_manual_slash_normalize, ban_raw_path_prefix_compare) and the .fbuild ratchet (#1385/#1387/#1395); searching first stops new copies before a lint has to catch them.
2 Conflicts get a research issue Adopted No equivalent rule in fbuild's docs. "Root causes only" in Core Principles points the same way.
3 Behaviour and refactor in separate commits/PRs Adapted Reconciled with the existing TDD rule (Red -> Green -> Refactor): the refactor step is its own commit.
4 Refactor first only past 50 lines into a >200-line function Adopted Consistent with "Minimal code impact" in Core Principles. Characterization-first matches the TDD rule.
5 Function/file size follow RUST-018 Adopted fbuild runs the ratchet (#1640: cognitive_complexity/too_many_lines = "warn" in Cargo.toml, 105 baseline #[expect]s), so the canonical text applies as written. Zero include! fragments today.
6 Fail fast; delete before abstracting; no single-impl trait Adopted Already practised: the VID/PID rule forbids degrading to a hardcoded literal. The no-single-impl-trait clause is consistent with the mocks policy (#838: a mock is not a second implementation).
7 Existing boundaries over generic DRY Adapted Bound to fbuild's boundaries: enforce_platform_boundary plus the other 27 Dylints, and the fixed crate set enforced by crate-gate.yml/crate_guard.py.
-- "HARD RULE refactor first", composition over inheritance, Open/Closed Dropped Dropped fleet-wide by #163: refactor-first is contradicted by soldr's regression history (soldr#2559, soldr#1490); the other two are not meaningful in Rust.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added project guidance on checking for existing solutions and researching conflicting behavior.
    • Clarified expectations for separating behavior changes from refactoring and keeping refactoring scope and code growth limited.
    • Added guidance on function and file complexity, fail-fast error handling, abstraction, and respecting established architectural boundaries.
    • No changes to end-user functionality are included.

Walkthrough

CLAUDE.md adds seven design principles for agents and reviewers. They cover searching for reusable implementations, documenting conflicting implementations, separating behavior changes from refactors, function and file complexity, input handling, abstraction choices, and architectural boundaries.

Review comments at @CLAUDE.md:
- Line 183: Update the refactoring guidance near “Refactor first only when you
would grow a giant function” to require characterization tests that pass against
the current implementation before extraction; remove the RED → GREEN requirement
for those tests while preserving that sequence for tests covering new behavior.
- Line 184: Update the hot-file guidance in the complexity-ratchet instruction
to check branch diffs for the target file against the integration base, rather
than using `git branch -a --contains`, which only finds branches containing
HEAD. Preserve the instruction to check for in-flight changes before splitting
the file.
- Line 186: Update Principle 7 to clarify that undocumented copies are findings
under Principle 2 only when they have observably different behavior;
behaviorally identical copies are refactors, whether documented or not, while
documented deliberate copies remain exempt.
