Repository navigation
feat!: share a GitProvider across namespaces, and key the branch worker by repository - #428
Conversation
…er by repository A branch worker was keyed by its GitProvider, so two GitProviders naming one repository gave one branch two workers. Each had its own clone, pending writes and apply windows, and they coordinated outside the event loop: a cross-worker flush with generation counters, observations copied between inboxes, and source-group claims under a shared lock. The review of #425 found a defect at each place that coordination left the loop. One worker now writes a repository branch: - The worker is keyed by the repository's URL, normalized as repourl compares it, and the branch (git.BranchKey). It pushes with the credential of the one GitProvider that owns the branch: the GitProvider of the oldest GitTarget writing it (git/branch_owner.go). - A GitTarget writing the branch through another GitProvider is refused with TargetConflict, and the message names the GitProvider to share. The GitTarget reconciler, the worker sweep and EnsureWorker decide ownership the same way, so two GitTargets created too close together for either reconcile to see the other still end with one worker. - GitTarget.spec.gitProviderRef gains a namespace, and GitProvider gains spec.accessFrom (the ClusterProvider's NamespaceMatcher). A GitProvider's own namespace is always admitted. authz.GitTargetAdmitted checks it, so the Validated gate, rule compilation, bootstrap and the applier checks all refuse a namespace the GitProvider does not admit. - The sibling machinery is deleted: apply_siblings.go, apply_sibling_flush.go, the shared observations and the group claims. - Lookups that assumed the GitProvider is in the GitTarget's namespace (mappers, the branch inventory, the publication fan-out, the applier recheck, the event router, bootstrap) use GitTarget.GitProviderKey. The branch metrics keep their provider_namespace and provider_name labels: they name the branch's one GitProvider. A GitProvider recreated under its name with another URL still replaces its worker, and the old observation moves to the new key so status.remote is taken back. UPGRADING.md also gains the entry #425 left out, for the removed FluxTrigger spec.quietPeriod and status.source.prefetch. BREAKING CHANGE: every GitTarget writing one repository branch must name the same GitProvider; a GitTarget writing it through another GitProvider than the oldest GitTarget there is refused with TargetConflict. Share a GitProvider across namespaces with spec.gitProviderRef.namespace and the GitProvider's spec.accessFrom. See UPGRADING.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winUpdate two statements that still describe per-provider workers.
This change makes one worker own each repository branch. The PR updates line 121, line 232, and line 482 to say so. Two unchanged lines still say otherwise:
- Line 834 says shared-source appliers take turns "across workers too". This PR removes cross-worker source-group coordination, and
groupBusynow scans only local appliers. The cited test can no longer prove a cross-worker claim.- Line 130 labels the worker "one per GitProvider and branch". Workers are now keyed by
git.BranchKey{Repository, Branch}.The style guide requires docs to "State what the software does, in present tense". An operator who reads these two lines gets the old model.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(applier): adopt an applier anew after a hand-back that kept its value A hand-back that leaves an applier as it stood can keep the value under GitOps Reverser's field manager: spec.suspend: true for a Kustomization suspended before, enabled: false for an Application that was manual and whose switch was taken while held. Referenced again, the applier claim took that kept value for a hold in place: - an ArgoCDClaim recorded nothing, so its next hand-back gave the switch up and the Application synced on its own; - a FluxClaim recorded nothing and stamped no token, and waited forever for a suspend Flux could never report handled, since the hand-back gave its requestedAt up and Flux still reports the old one. An applier claim with no previousSuspendState, no Held=True and no operation in flight is adopting: a held field is then one a hand-back kept. Once an uncached read finds no other applier claim holding the applier, it records how the applier stands and holds it anew, a Kustomization with a fresh token, as it takes over any suspend. The key was never the apply trigger: it says what made the edit. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * lets do some graphics! * docs: show the new configuration diagrams where they explain the model config-platform-shared shows a platform namespace sharing a GitProvider and a GitReceiver with team namespaces, beside the text that says so; config-bi-directional shows a coordinated folder in the bi-directional model and under who applies this folder. config-basics, redrawn with GitBranch and KubeProvider, gets alt text that says what it shows. Also restores a sentence the rename garbled: the applier's own schedule is off, not its "own applier claims". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(configuration): sharing connections across namespaces, with push routing "Why both provider types are namespaced" becomes a practical section on what a platform team shares and how teams reach it: the GitProvider and KubeProvider admit namespaces with accessFrom, the GitBranch sits beside its credential, and a GitReceiver needs no wiring at all, since a push wakes every GitProvider whose spec.url names the repository, for the branch it names. An example shows a platform namespace and a team's GitTarget writing its own branch through it. One branch worker now writes each repository branch. A
GitTargetcan share aGitProviderfrom another namespace instead of copying its credential, and the sibling-worker machinery is gone. Why
A branch worker was keyed by its
GitProvider, so twoGitProviders naming one repository gave one branch two workers ("siblings"). Each had its own clone, pending writes and apply windows. #425 had to coordinate them outside the event loop: a cross-worker flush with generation counters, observations copied between inboxes, and source-group claims under a shared lock. The review of #425 found a defect at each place that coordination left the loop:And siblings were required, not a misconfiguration: a repository written from two namespaces needed two

TwoGitProviders for one repository on different branches are unaffected. I checked the e2e suite and shared fixtures: no spec or fixture has twoGitProviders writing one branch at the same time.Decision for you
The oldest
GitTargetwins the branch. That lets any namespace that can create aGitProviderandGitTargetsquat a repository branch: point aGitProviderat someone else's URL, needing no credentials, and create aGitTargetfirst. The victim's refusal names the squattingGitTarget, so it is visible, but it is a denial-of-service path that siblings did not have. It is not mitigated here.Tests
