Apache Commons Codec 1.23.0 Release Notes

The Apache Commons Codec team is pleased to announce the release of Apache Commons Codec 1.23.0.

The Apache Commons Codec component contains encoders and decoders for formats such as Base16, Base32, Base64, digest, and Hexadecimal. In addition to these widely used encoders and decoders, the codec package also maintains a collection of phonetic encoding utilities.

This is a feature and maintenance release. Java 8 or later is required.

New features

  •         Grow Base58 accumulation buffers geometrically within the configured input limits and validate actual accumulated length. Thanks to Gary Gregory.

  •         Hex decoding now accepts only ASCII hexadecimal characters (0-9, A-F, a-f). Previously accepted non-ASCII Unicode digits and fullwidth letters now cause DecoderException, including when supplied as UTF-8 bytes or ByteBuffers. Thanks to Gary Gregory.

  •         Restrict Hex decoding to ASCII hexadecimal characters. Thanks to Gary Gregory.

  •         Validate BinaryCodec input while preserving leading-bit truncation. Thanks to Gary Gregory.

  •         Reject oversized Beider-Morse input before language guessing. Thanks to Gary Gregory.

  •         QuotedPrintableCodec decoding now preserves hard CRLF line breaks and, leniently, unpaired CR and LF bytes instead of discarding them. Soft line breaks require the full =CRLF sequence; previously accepted =CR without LF now throws DecoderException. This affects both constructor modes and QCodec, which shares the decoder. Version 13.17

  • Request now accepts a null Request.Body and treats it as "no body", instead of throwing a NullPointerException from body(), charset(), isBinary() and length(). A request with no body reports a null body and charset, is binary, and has length 0. Its toString() prints the request line and headers without a body (#1210).
  • Form encoders can process primitive array fields without failing on an Object[] cast. URL-encoded fields use the request's CollectionFormat. In multipart requests, numeric and boolean arrays create repeated parts, and byte[] values stay as one binary part. Multipart char[] values are still passed to the delegate encoder (#3607).

Version 13.16

  • Path-style expansion repeats the entry name for each collection or array value inside a map, instead of encoding Object.toString(). A list value expands as ;colours=red;colours=blue rather than a bracketed list, and an array no longer puts its identity hash in the URL (#3584).
  • Simple and path-style expansion skip map entries where the value is null. This works the same way as skipping a null element in an iterable. It no longer throws a NullPointerException.
  • New experimental decodeErrorResponses() builder option decodes a 4xx/5xx response body into the method's return type instead of throwing, for APIs that report failures in a response envelope (#3559). 404, void methods, bodies that are missing, empty or over 8 KiB, and retryable errors still throw.
