on Apr 22, 2024 I discovered this need while verifying #2657
This would pretty easy to remember via the Storage Service. For example here's where we use it to remember which runtime to start in the workspace:
positron/src/vs/workbench/services/runtimeStartup/common/runtimeStartup.ts
Lines 336 to 341 in ea87358
// Save this runtime as the affiliated runtime for the current workspace. this._storageService.store(this.storageKeyForRuntime(session.runtimeMetadata), JSON.stringify(session.runtimeMetadata), StorageScope.WORKSPACE, StorageTarget.MACHINE); FWIW I kind of think
StorageScope.WORKSPACE(the least comprehensive option) is too much for this behavior; I wouldn't necessarily expect the directory I choose to persist in a workspace beyond my current session.Note: We could use the new ephemeral state storage service to save the default for the current session only.

on Dec 9, 2025 Up! This would be very useful: not only remembering the last export directory, but also the format.
If you change the directory where you want to save a plot, using the Plots pane:
that directory choice does not persist beyond saving that single file. If you go to save another plot, the directory populates with the working directory again.
Definitely not needed for Public Beta, but let's eventually make this so when you choose a new directory there, it is retained at least until you quit Positron or switch to a different workspace or similar.
