CastleOS session context
Updated: 2026-05-05
User goals from this chat
- Fix the x86_64 build/link failure around shell commands.
- Add a shutdown command.
- Make disk reporting show available targets and locations.
- Make install do something real instead of only flipping flags.
- Make CastleBash meaningfully different from the classic shell.
- Hide commands from the classic shell that should only exist after install.
- Add more Bash-like commands to CastleBash.
- Improve keyboard support:
- shift and caps behavior
- symbols on number keys and punctuation
- arrow keys and other non-printing keys
- editable shell input with a movable text cursor
- User also asked for actual Wi-Fi, storage, and other drivers needed for a truly real install.
- Latest direct request: implement a wireless driver.
- New concrete scope from the user: scan for the Wi-Fi card and then let the user choose the Wi-Fi driver.
- Latest direct request: show USB-connected install devices in the install target list, and also implement a Wi-Fi data path.
- Latest direct requests:
- add a packet driver for Wi-Fi
- let the user choose drivers for everything they wish
- update this context file regularly on every prompt
- New latest direct request:
- the packet driver is not loaded
- configurable commands should support a numbered interactive flow when invoked with `config`
- after finishing, run the Docker build flow with `castleos-buildenv`
- then boot the ISO in QEMU with `-device e1000,netdev=n0`
- test what works, fix what does not, and write `checklist.txt`
- Newest prompt update:
- after all of this, test again with the same Docker/QEMU method
- also add ssh
- Latest reminder from the user:
- keep updating this context file
- Clarified path boundary from the user:
- the real repo is /Users/Dead_channel/Documents/GitHub/CastleOS
- do not work in the nested /Users/Dead_channel/Documents/GitHub/CastleOS/CastleOS copy
- User asked to keep this file updated every prompt so context survives better if the chat limit is hit.
- Latest direct requests in the real repo:
- add Shift+Up and Shift+Down terminal scrolling
- add a lightweight text-only browser with buttons
- only enable the cursor in the browser
- stop mouse or trackpad movement from typing junk into the shell
- fix end-of-row typing so it wraps properly again
- keep the current WiFi implementation alone because it is working on this repo
- Latest follow-up:
- mouse cursor is too sensitive
- user asked how to open a website in the new browser
- New latest follow-up:
- after closing the browser, terminal colors leak into a green background / white text state
- add terminal color configuration
- Newest direct request:
- make CastleBrowse actually browse websites instead of only showing built-in/about pages
- implement real web visiting without leaving it as a placeholder
Important environment context
- Working directory: /Users/Dead_channel/Documents/GitHub/CastleOS
- The local machine can compile and link the kernel, but local ISO packaging fails because grub-mkrescue is not installed outside Docker.
- README says the intended build flow is:
1) docker run --rm -it -v $(pwd):/root/env myos-buildenv
2) make build-x86_64 inside the container
- A direct docker run from the assistant was blocked by sandbox policy because it mounted the writable workspace into an unverified image.
What was broken originally
- Linker error:
- undefined reference to cmd_drivers
- undefined reference to cmd_pci
- That happened because shell.c declared those commands and referenced them in the command table, but the function bodies were missing.
What has already been changed in the repo
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Added cmd_drivers implementation.
- Added cmd_pci implementation.
- Added cmd_shutdown implementation using common emulator poweroff ports.
- Added install target modeling so disk/install output is more concrete:
- /dev/ram0 target
- modeled /dev/sda and /dev/sda1 when a storage controller is detected
- Added install image manifest capture so install writes a structured image description into the chosen target record instead of only setting booleans.
- Added disk inventory/status/show/rescan behavior.
- install now validates the selected target against the visible disk inventory before proceeding.
- readme.md
- Updated to match the newer install/disk/shutdown behavior.
Verification completed so far
- make build-x86_64 now gets through compilation and link successfully on the host.
- The remaining host-side failure is:
- /bin/sh: grub-mkrescue: command not found
- That means the original linker issue is fixed.
New shell/Bash refactor already started but not finished yet
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Increased SHELL_MAX_NODES from 32 to 64.
- Added SHELL_HISTORY_SIZE.
- Increased INSTALL_MANIFEST_SIZE from 8192 to 16384.
- Added command mode flags:
- COMMAND_SHELL_CLASSIC
- COMMAND_SHELL_BASH
- COMMAND_REQUIRES_INSTALL
- Expanded struct Command to include flags.
- Added history buffer globals.
- Added forward declarations for:
- VFS helpers for copy/move/delete/path creation
- shell history recording
- command visibility helpers
- new Bash-like commands
- Updated the command table to start separating classic shell commands from CastleBash-only commands.
- This part is incomplete and still needs implementation work before the tree is build-safe again.
Keyboard/input work completed in this pass
- src/intf/keyboard.h
- Replaced the old char keyboard_getchar() interface with:
- special key enum values
- int keyboard_getkey()
- src/impl/x86_64/keyboard.c
- Replaced the old flat scancode table with a real polled key decoder.
- Added:
- shift handling
- caps lock handling
- symbol output on number/punctuation keys
- extended-key handling for arrows, home, end, and delete
- src/intf/print.h and src/impl/x86_64/print.c
- Added cursor getter/setter helpers and direct character placement helpers so shell input can be re-rendered in place.
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Migrated shell input off keyboard_getchar() onto keyboard_getkey().
- Added in-place line editing for shell input:
- left/right movement
- home/end
- delete
- in-line insertion
- up/down history recall
- Password entry now uses the same editable input path with masking.
- nano was migrated to the new keyboard API for enter/backspace/escape/printable keys.
Classic shell vs CastleBash split status
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- struct Command now carries visibility/install flags.
- Classic shell help only shows commands valid in the classic shell.
- CastleBash-only commands are hidden until install.
- If a user tries a Bash-only command from the classic shell, the shell now points them toward install or launching CastleBash.
- Added more Bash-like commands:
- cat
- touch
- mkdir
- rm
- cp
- mv
- whoami
- uname
- history
- hostname
- Added VFS helpers to support copy/move/delete and mkdir -p behavior.
Known current architectural limits
- Actual Wi-Fi is not implemented.
- network.c currently has a real RTL8139 Ethernet packet driver.
- network_wifi_connect() only stores an SSID/profile and reports that a wireless driver is not implemented.
- There is no chipset-specific wireless driver or firmware loader in the repo yet.
- There is also no in-repo 802.11 MAC/auth/association stack, scan path, or chipset-specific initialization path for any Wi-Fi hardware.
- This means "implement wireless driver" is not one generic change here; it requires choosing a concrete wireless chipset family and building to that hardware.
- Actual persistent disk install is not implemented at the block-driver level.
- drivers.c can detect storage controllers.
- There is no ATA, AHCI, or NVMe block driver yet.
- The current install target model is more honest and useful than before, but it is still not a real on-disk bootable installation path.
- Keyboard input is still the old simple driver until keyboard.c and shell.c are finished.
Current priority at the moment of this update
1) Keep this file updated.
2) Keep WiFi/network behavior in this repo untouched while fixing shell/input issues around it.
3) Finish input, scrollback, and browser work in the top-level repo.
4) Keep build verification passing after each change.
Latest top-level repo changes completed
- src/intf/keyboard.h
- Added KEY_SHIFT_UP and KEY_SHIFT_DOWN.
- Added keyboard_pollkey() for non-blocking browser input.
- src/impl/x86_64/keyboard.c
- Now filters auxiliary PS/2 bytes so mouse movement is not treated as shell key input.
- Feeds auxiliary bytes into the mouse state path instead of letting them leak into shell typing.
- Adds Shift+Up and Shift+Down key reporting.
- src/intf/mouse.h and src/impl/x86_64/mouse.c
- Added mouse_poll() so the shell/browser can poll live mouse movement without needing interrupt wiring.
- Tuned browser mouse sensitivity with accumulated raw deltas, separate X/Y divisors, and a maximum movement step per packet.
- src/intf/print.h and src/impl/x86_64/print.c
- Reworked terminal output around a scrollback-backed text buffer.
- Added viewport scrolling, absolute cursor rows, cursor visibility control, and refresh helpers.
- This fixes shell editing at the end of rows and enables terminal scrollback.
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Shell line rendering now uses absolute rows instead of clipping to the visible 80x25 window.
- Shell input now supports Shift+Up and Shift+Down to scroll terminal history.
- Added a lightweight built-in text browser command: browser
- Browser has:
- button bar
- mouse cursor only inside browser mode
- click support
- keyboard fallback with Tab, arrows, Enter, Esc
- built-in about pages for home, network, install, and help
- WiFi/network code was intentionally left unchanged in network.c as requested.
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Added terminal color configuration state.
- Added /etc/colors.conf to the in-memory VFS.
- Added a colors command with:
- colors
- colors status
- colors list
- colors set <foreground> <background>
- colors fg <color>
- colors bg <color>
- colors reset
- colors config
- Browser mode now restores the configured terminal color before clearing and returning to the shell, so browser cursor/button colors do not leak into the normal terminal background.
Latest verification in the top-level repo
- make build-x86_64 in /Users/Dead_channel/Documents/GitHub/CastleOS now compiles and links cleanly.
- The only remaining host failure is still ISO packaging:
- /bin/sh: grub-mkrescue: command not found
- Docker build in the top-level repo was rerun successfully with castleos-buildenv and produced:
- dist/x86_64/CastleOS.iso
- A light QEMU boot pass was also run against the new ISO.
- Booted with rtl8139 and a monitor socket.
- A boot screenshot file was produced at /tmp/castleos-final-boot.png.
- This confirms the image boots far enough for monitor capture, but browser visuals and new scroll behavior still want a fuller interactive guest test.
- Latest color/browser verification:
- Host make still compiles and links cleanly; host ISO packaging still fails only because grub-mkrescue is missing.
- Docker build with castleos-buildenv completed and regenerated dist/x86_64/CastleOS.iso.
- QEMU booted the ISO with e1000.
- colors list ran inside the guest and displayed all 16 VGA colors.
- browser opened in QEMU, q closed it, and the terminal returned to green-on-black instead of leaking the browser cursor/background colors.
- Screenshots created:
- /tmp/castleos-colors-list.png
- /tmp/castleos-browser-open.png
- /tmp/castleos-browser-closed.png
Wireless assessment from the latest inspection
- drivers.c detects wireless-class PCI devices and stores first_wireless metadata, but does not initialize any wireless hardware.
- network.c only initializes RTL8139 Ethernet.
- The current Wi-Fi path is just:
- save SSID/profile
- report "wireless driver not implemented yet"
- A real Wi-Fi implementation would need, at minimum:
- one chosen chipset family
- chipset register/DMA init
- RX/TX ring handling
- 802.11 frame handling
- scan/auth/assoc logic or a much simpler chosen scope
- possibly firmware loading depending on chipset
Latest Wi-Fi improvement completed
- src/intf/network.h
- Added Wi-Fi hardware/driver selection fields to NetworkStatus.
- Added APIs for Wi-Fi rescanning and driver-choice querying/selection.
- src/impl/x86_64/network.c
- Added Wi-Fi PCI controller rescan logic.
- Added vendor-based driver-choice registry and recommended-driver selection.
- Added explicit driver selection state.
- network_wifi_state() now reports:
- no controller detected
- controller detected but no driver selected
- driver selected but no profile
- profile saved but no actual data path yet
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Added:
- wifi scan
- wifi drivers
- wifi driver <name>
- wifi driver auto
- Wi-Fi status now shows detected controller, recommended driver, selected driver, and saved SSID where applicable.
- Wi-Fi configuration persistence now records selected driver in /etc/wifi.conf.
Latest USB install-target improvement completed
- src/intf/drivers.h and src/impl/x86_64/drivers.c
- Added PCI USB host-controller detection:
- UHCI
- OHCI
- EHCI
- XHCI
- Driver status now tracks the first detected USB controller and controller counts.
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- Install-target inventory now includes modeled removable USB targets when a USB host controller is detected:
- /dev/usb0
- /dev/usb0p1
- Driver status output now reports USB controller counts.
- drivers command output now shows the first detected USB controller.
Latest driver-selection framework completed
- src/intf/drivers.h and src/impl/x86_64/drivers.c
- Added driver-choice registries for:
- network
- storage
- usb
- Added selected-driver and recommended-driver tracking for those subsystems.
- Added selection/query APIs for shell use.
- Driver choices are inferred from detected hardware, for example:
- network: rtl8139, generic-ethernet-pci
- storage: ata-pio, ahci, nvme, usb-storage, generic-storage-pci
- usb: xhci, ehci, ohci, uhci, generic-usb-host
- src/intf/network.h and src/impl/x86_64/network.c
- Added stable accessors for selected/recommended Wi-Fi driver names.
- src/impl/x86_64/shell.c
- drivers command now supports:
- drivers status
- drivers rescan
- drivers list
- drivers list <network|wifi|storage|usb>
- drivers choose <subsystem> <driver>
- drivers auto <subsystem>
- Driver preferences are now persisted into /etc/drivers.conf.
- Wi-Fi driver persistence is unified with the general driver-preference persistence path.
- Driver status output now includes current selections for net/wifi/storage/usb.
Current Wi-Fi data-path blocker
- The kernel can now:
- detect a Wi-Fi PCI controller
- recommend possible driver families
- let the user select a driver profile
- persist driver choices for every major detected subsystem
- But it still cannot send or receive real Wi-Fi traffic because there is no chipset-specific TX/RX implementation yet.
- This next step requires choosing one concrete Wi-Fi chipset family or exact PCI vendor/device ID.
- The assistant has now explicitly asked for either:
- the `wifi scan` / `drivers` vendor+device IDs, or
- a target family like `ath9k`, `iwlwifi`, `rtlwifi`, or `mt76`
before implementing a real Wi-Fi packet driver.
Latest diagnostic for the current prompt
- The current packet-driver failure is most likely because the kernel only initializes RTL8139.
- The requested QEMU run now uses `-device e1000`, so `network.c` will currently detect the NIC but leave `packet_driver_ready = 0`.
- The shell also needs a new interactive `config` path for configurable commands such as:
- `net config`
- `wifi config`
- `disk config`
- `drivers config`
- After code changes, the user wants:
1) Docker build with `docker run --rm -it -v $(pwd):/root/env castleos-buildenv`
2) `make build-x86_64` inside Docker
3) exit Docker
4) boot with QEMU using the generated ISO and an `e1000` NIC
5) test and document results in `checklist.txt`
- Live QEMU testing already found one real regression and fix:
- the guest saw `8086:100e` on `0:3.0`
- `net status` still showed `Packet driver: not loaded`
- QEMU `info pci` showed the `e1000` I/O BAR at PCI BAR1 (`0x14`), not the BAR offset first used in `network.c`
- the `e1000` init path was updated to read the correct BAR
- The next work after that fix is:
- rebuild in Docker again
- rerun the same QEMU validation
- add an SSH command/config surface that matches the repo's real networking limits
- Since that note:
- SSH command/config scaffolding was added in the shell with persisted `ssh.conf` state.
- Docker rebuild was rerun successfully after the SSH changes.
- Final QEMU verification is in progress and the user reiterated that this file should keep being updated as we go.
- Live QEMU checks now confirm:
- boot to the CastleOS shell prompt works
- `ssh status` works and shows the new SSH state/config surface
- `net status` still reports the Intel `8086:100e` NIC but also still reports `Packet driver: not loaded`
- The e1000 path was improved with:
- correct BAR1 I/O selection
- EEPROM MAC fallback
but that still did not make the packet driver bind in the latest guest test
- Latest runtime diagnosis from the user:
- `ping` is failing with `ICMP timeout`, not `ARP timeout`
- that means ARP resolution succeeded and the failure is later in ICMP reply handling or packet validity

User preference note
- Keep updating this file as the conversation progresses so the work survives context pressure better.
- Update this file on every new user prompt, not just at major milestones.
- Directory boundary clarification:
- the current directory `/Users/Dead_channel/Documents/github/CastleOS` is okay to edit
- do not edit the nested `castleos/` directory that lives inside this directory
- Latest status:
- the ICMP timeout issue has not been fixed yet in the most recent turn
- the last action was only to clarify the editable directory boundary and record it here
- Latest handoff:
- user asked to pause code changes and provide exact commands instead
- next useful step is to have the user run the guest commands and report the output so the ICMP failure can be pinned down
- Latest user report:
- ping got a reply back
- this means the ICMP path is working at least in the latest test
- Latest user test:
- user tried pinging 8.8.8.8
- waiting on the exact result to tell whether the failure is local-link only or upstream/NAT related
- Latest network note:
- CastleOS already routes off-subnet traffic to the configured gateway in `network_ping()`
- QEMU user-mode networking is the likely blocker for external ICMP, not the guest code itself
- local-router ping can work while internet ping still fails
- UTM note:
- UTM is QEMU-based
- shared/emulated NAT-style networking is still likely to have the same ping-to-internet limits
- bridged networking is the better bet if the host interface supports it
- Latest user request:
- create ASCII art that looks like a castle
- Latest formatting request:
- make the ASCII art paste into an IDE with the same spacing and alignment
- Latest user preference:
- make the castle wide enough to span the text area, but keep it relatively short
- Latest user formatting request:
- make the castle ASCII art a single line so IDEs won't auto-wrap or error on paste
- Clarification:
- user wants one source line containing `\n` escapes, so the terminal prints the castle across multiple lines
- Latest castle request:
- the previous castle still looks off
- keep iterating until the terminal output reads like a proper wide, low castle
- Latest refinement:
- keep the source as one line with `\n` escapes, but make the rendered output wider and more castle-like
- Latest README update:
- README was rewritten to be more polished and GitHub-friendly
- it now has a clickable contents section and clearer build/run/status notes
- Latest user request:
- make the OS more usable on real hardware
- include drivers by default where possible
- add Shift+Up / Shift+Down terminal scrolling
- push robustness as far as realistically possible, but avoid fake guarantees
- Latest user request:
- make Ethernet networking work with real DHCP and internet routing where the NIC path supports it
- add install options for DHCP and internet-facing network setup
- replace manual SSID entry with WiFi network scanning and selection when real WiFi scanning is available
