CastleOS checklist
Updated: 2026-05-05
Verified working
- Docker build flow
- Ran: docker run --rm -it -v $(pwd):/root/env castleos-buildenv
- Then ran inside Docker: make build-x86_64
- Result: build completed and wrote dist/x86_64/CastleOS.iso
- QEMU boot with e1000 test method
- Ran: qemu-system-x86_64 -drive file=dist/x86_64/CastleOS.iso,file.locking=off,format=raw,media=cdrom,readonly=on -boot d -netdev user,id=n0 -device e1000,netdev=n0
- Result: CastleOS booted to the shell prompt
- Shell boot prompt
- Result: CastleOS:/home> prompt appeared in QEMU
- ssh status command
- Result: works in the guest and shows:
- SSH enabled/disabled state
- remote user
- port
- last host
- host key fingerprint
- honest transport status
- SSH configuration persistence
- Result: /etc/ssh.conf is created and updated by the shell
- Numbered config flows added
- Result: implemented for:
- net config
- wifi config
- disk config
- drivers config
- ssh config
- colors config
- colors list command
- Result: works in QEMU and prints the 0-15 VGA color palette
- Browser exit colors
- Result: opened browser, quit with q, and confirmed the terminal returned to green text on black background instead of keeping the browser cursor/background colors
Known not working
- e1000 packet driver binding
- Guest detects Intel 8086:100e at 0:3.0
- net status still reports:
- Network: network device found, no packet driver for it yet
- Packet driver: not loaded
- ping over e1000
- Blocked because the e1000 packet driver is still not active
- Real SSH transport
- The ssh command surface exists, but TCP/IP and SSH session transport are not implemented yet
- Real WiFi data path
- Detection and driver selection exist, but there is still no working wireless packet/data path
- Real persistent storage install
- Installer writes modeled install state and manifests, but the repo still lacks real ATA/AHCI/NVMe block drivers
- Remote web fetch in browser
- Browser mode exists, but remote HTTP/HTTPS pages are not implemented
